Come Back Witch

29: Lord of Skulls

Another arrow flew right past his head. It was fast... Way too fast to be shot by any normal human. He could hear the second arrow connect with a house wall behind him, breaking through it.

His body was weak, he still could barely move. A third arrow wouldn't miss its target again.

Readying himself to block the attack with his spear, it never came. As confusion slowly started to build up in his body, somebody stepped out behind a building in front of him.

Holding no weapon, a giant young student with black hair stood in front of him. How could he not recognize his classmate Perl, one of the twins from his PE class.

"How could you do this?" the young giant spoke, his voice filled with sorrow and anger. ''And how could you dare to use the face of our friend for your evil deeds?''

Vinces only stared at his friend in confusion, lowering his spear, which turned out to be a mistake. Perl stooped, snatched a stone from the road, and hurled it with terrifying speed.

Barely blocking the incoming projectile Vinces did not realize that Perl had already moved just in front of him, delivering a powerful blow directly towards his chest.

Vinces felt like he could fly away a couple of meters but didn't even move one inch; instead, as he stared down, he could see that Perl had made an unnatural deformation on his upper body.

It felt less like being punched and more like being struck by a battering ram.

Vinces wanted to scream but could only spit out blood. He couldn't talk to anyone, as it seemed one of his lungs had been damaged badly. He had to fight or else he would be the one dying right here.

He couldn't blame Perl, he looked perfectly like the murderer, using the same spear and badly wounded. Of course they would think he was some kind of mimic. But that didn't matter right now.

Spitting out another load of blood, this time he aimed it directly towards Perl's face, hitting his eyes. As he then moved his elbow directly against his throat in the moment of confusion. Sending the giant stumbling back.

Even after gaining a small advantage, the fight still looked hopeless. His whole body was shaking as he could barely move. Closing his eyes, he could feel two more lights approaching from a head not even a minute away.

His companions were still too far away to have realized the danger, and he couldn't scream for help with his damaged lungs.

He needed a plan fast or the situation would only become worse than it already was. Until suddenly a small idea formed in his mind.

Holding his spear with his left hand, his right moved towards his aluminum student ID, tearing it from his uniform.

With a small throw, he let go of the ID, letting it stay in the air just in front of him. He swung his spear with all the might he had remaining, hitting the small piece of metal and sending it flying away.

He wasn't going to use it as an attack; instead, he had something completely different in mind.

Then the bell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then its heavy echoes rolled across the silent village.

He hit his target: the clock tower of the village church.

Letting out a small blood-filled grin, Perl's next punch again connected with his body, this time sending him flying away and crashing to the ground. Having lost grip of his weapon, his spear flew a few inches away from his hand.

But Perl didn't hurry to finish him off yet; instead, he only slowly walked closer.

''WHY DID YOU DO THIS?'' Perl screamed with uncontrollable anger as the whole ground around them seemed to shake. Finally standing at Vinces feet, Perl raised his hand, ready to deliver the final blow.

As he grabbed the throat of Vinces with force enough to crush a skull. Perl's hand hit his face once and then again as a hail of punches hit down on his face.

But suddenly it stopped. Weakly opening his eyes, Vinces could see the reason for his survival.

Standing just behind the towering giant stood an elderly man; David held a rune carved dagger right at the throat of the giant. He had heard his signal and arrived just in time.

"Move again, big kid and I'll open your throat. Simple as that."" His grumpiness had disappeared; instead, it was replaced by something similar to precision, as he was sure his words would come true.

As Perl slowly raised his hands in surrender, Perl began to laugh as if he had won already.

But the piece didn't even last a second more as a different voice echoed through the air barely a few meters away. "You should stop, old man." It was the voice of his professor; following the voice, he found him staying on top of a building, holding up a drawn bow.

''I won't miss another time. '' Cloves spoke, his voice calm as water. Standing behind him was Professor Roseberg, their English teacher.

-------

Not too far away just outside the barrier of the village stood inside the woods a hooded man, or mostly hooded, as some parts of his clothes had been burned away.

The skin peeking through his clothes wasn't much different, as it had turned completely dark as charcoal. His whole body was smoking and shaking.

''How could this witch still have such a powerful barrier? I couldn't stay in there for more than a minute.'' As a pained laugh echoed through the forest. Slowly falling to the ground.

''Come out, little servants of the fifth.'' He spoke, his voice weak already.

As two hooded figures stepped out behind the tree.

"Oh Lord of skulls, you have called for us. How could we serve you today?''

''Master of puppets, we are here for your wish.''

Both the servants spoke with the exact same voice.

The lord of skull seemed to inspect his body as he finally spoke.

''I will return to the farewell shore after the first barrier finally breaks.''

Taking a deep breath, he raised his hand; a small wooden puppet seemed to realize itself into existence in his hand.

As one of the servants walked over, pulling a knife from his pocket, raising it to cut off his own fingers.

As the blood of the servant fell into the puppet, the lord of skull started to write something with it, laughing mischievously.

''This time not even this brat will be able to tell them apart.''

As the puppet slowly began to grow into a human shape.
