Come Back Witch

16: Trust in your own

Vinces slowly turned around towards her, but she had disappeared; he shook his head in confusion. What was he thinking about again? He couldn't remember.

Standing in front of the cave, he felt like he missed something. Yes, exactly; he wanted to get out of the garden. Turning around and staring at the entrance, it seemed to be the only way out of here. To the left and right was just a steep rocky cliff stretching far upwards. No way he would be able to climb it so easily.

Taking a step towards the cave, he felt like something was trying to pull him inside. Stopping in his tracks, whatever was calling out for it only got louder each second until a distinctive voice could be heard.

"Brother, help me, I think I've broken my leg." The voice of Matthew echoed through the cave. Hearing it Vinces, he instantly moved forward, walking through the small dark entrance. His step each becoming quieter than the last since he entered.

Now walking in silence, the voice still continued to call out periodically. Vinces felt like he should run towards it, but something in his mind felt like this whole situation was wrong. But how could he stop? His brother was hurt.

He couldn't let him fall behind, not again. Suddenly he froze, the voice only a few meters away. Again? What happened to him last time? He tried to remember, but his mind was slowly turning blank.

He felt sleepy; maybe he had been walking for too long. He should rest now and continue later.

Slowly he let his body fall forward; he stared at the dirty ground. Which seemed to have a weird pattern in it, reminding him of a runic symbol... The symbol of grace for a personal charm.

As his head hit the cold stone, it seemed to activate his brain again. Runic symbols... Grace? A memory of a lady sitting in a runic cloak flashed his mind.

The witch, wasn't he going around together with her? Had they been separated? No, he could remember now; she was just behind him before his brother's voice called out. As realization hit him, his whole body urged him to run away.

Something is playing with his mind; his brother was long dead; he couldn't be here. Also whatever it was seemed to be powerful enough to even affect his vision, removing the witch from it.

It all made sense, she wasn't able to touch him, so if the monster just erased her voice and manipulated his vision, there was no way for her to communicate to him.

Well, that was until now; she simply changed something in his surroundings, fueling his suspicious personality. She was way more sharp-minded than he had predicted, but there was no time to think about it.

Slightly raising his head from the ground, the voice of his brother had disappeared. Only the light sound of something swishing in front of him. He tried to concentrate but just couldn't see anything.

But he wasn't going to stay down until whatever was in front of him got the chance to attack. He pushed himself from the ground; with his new strength, he was easily able to flip into a standing stance.

But suddenly the whole cave became completely quiet once more. It felt like the monster had noticed his change in behavior, because whatever presence it had before was now completely gone. Vinces took a cautious step back, but it was of no use as something heavy but only the size of a whip connected with his chest, sending him flying back even further.

Leaving a swallow cut across his whole chest, destroying his student uniform even further.

It felt like he should've broken himself a few rips, but to his surprise he was able to rise, his body seemingly only slightly hurt. He raised his hands into a defensive position as something bit into his forearm, sending waves of pain through his body.

Blood slowly dripped down his arm as she swung his other arm towards the position of the bit, but whatever had bitten him already had let go before his other arm could try to hit it.

The situation was bad, he didn't know anything about his enemy, neither its anatomy nor the full extent of its grace. The witch also didn't seem to be able to help him in any way.

He must find a way to escape or fight back. Escaping seemed to be an easier solution, but one thing stopped him from trying. He actually wasn't even sure where he was. If this being was able to erase the witch from his vision, who says it can't change his thoughts of the surroundings?

Especially after it had already been outplayed by the trick of the witch once. No, he had to fight, but there was no possibility to attack directly, instead, he had to either anticipate its attack or simply take it to counter.

As if he had heard his thoughts, something slammed into his legs, sending him tumbling over, the cracking of bones could be heard. But instead of just falling, he turned his move forward into a tactical roll, grabbing whatever was in front of him.

As his hands manage to hold something wooden, feeling like a branch of a willow tree. Landing on his feet after the roll, he started to spin leftward, pulling with all his might, sending whatever he was holding flying.

It felt like the branch was connected to something way bigger and heavier, though not impossible for him to lift. As it seemed to have crashed into one of the cave walls.

The pain in his arm and leg was manageable, but his body seemed much weaker than just a minute ago. His wounds felt like they were pulsating, something poisonous was running through his body.

Invisible enemy, with poisonous attacks? How was that even fair? But he couldn't think too long about the unfairness of the world.

The monster wasn't the only being here with abilities, but Vinces didn't know how to use them effectively at all. He wasn't even sure if he could use them again, having only created a small light earlier.

Light? His own thoughts seem to finally connect to his new sense. Until now he had unwillingly suppressed it.

He took a big breath, focusing on his sixth sense, closing his eyes, deciding to only focus on it. Two small lights were close to him, standing roughly ten meters in front of him was a dark light, slowly getting close. Instead, to his left was the pure white light of Lysandra pointing towards the monster.

Setting his focus back to the monster, he could only feel his presence, still not having any idea of his anatomy. His long branches also didn't seem to be included in his light.

As a small thought started to form in his mind, there was a possibility to win and it fully depended on the witches' support.

"I will follow your lead, Lysandra." His voice spoke out, not sure if she could hear it, but her reaction was greater than any answer. Her light moved towards the ground as if she were falling.

Vinces instantly followed her movement, feeling something barely graze his hair; it had missed for the first time. He stretched his hands, trying to grab the branch once more, but in the corner of his eyes, he could see Lysandra's light moving upward.

Instead of attacking, he decided to trust her, jumping into the air; his hurt left foot could barely support him. But their plan was going perfectly as a different branch flew just below his body. And with his simple dodge, he managed to land perfectly on it.

As his weight pinned one of them to the ground, his hands finally reached the other. Watching the witch do a pulling movement, he followed it. With all his power he could feel its heavy body moving through the air towards him, coming to a halt just a meter away.

But it wasn't going to lose that easily, instead of trying to free itself, its branches began to cling to his limbs, slowly moving forward and backward, destroying his skin with its rough surface.

If the poison hadn't slowed down his reaction, he could've maybe escaped its grasp.

He couldn't move half his body and the poison slowly ground away at his endurance. He had to win now, or else there might not be enough time for another strike.

Staring at the witch, she also didn't seem to have any move he could do to free himself. Instead, he simply was going to bet it all on one simple hope.

There was only one way he could go, he could only run towards it because of his bindings. And so he did, with his broken leg, he readied himself for a jump.

The poison felt like it was eating away at his body, slowly burning his life away. But even then he didn't slow down for a single second.

Normally it would be impossible to even move this leg anymore, but his superhuman body barely allowed it.

With a small jump.

He closed the distance between the two of them.

As his free arm moved towards the prominent point of dark light.

Grabbing onto a wooden surface.

His mind only had one plea.

He tightened his grip.

"Oh world..."

"...burn it to the ground."
