Chapter 262: Front Porch Light
The Dunphy house came into view at the end of the street, warm porch light glowing softly against the evening dark.
And immediately Haley felt the shift.
Not away from him.
Just back toward reality.
The car slowed near the curb before finally stopping in front of the house.
Neither of them moved right away.
Of course not.
Haley stared out through the windshield for a few seconds while nerves quietly returned to fill the silence.
Because endings still felt fragile between them.
Then she laughed softly under her breath.
"What?"
"I'm trying to figure out how people normally end complicated reunion dinners."
Gael smiled faintly.
"I don't think there's a guidebook."
"That feels irresponsible."
Then the quiet settled again.
But softer than before.
Haley looked down at her hands resting in her lap.
"You know…" Her voice lowered slightly. "I was really convinced I shouldn't see you again today."
Gael stayed still beside her.
Not interrupting.
Then she glanced toward him.
"And now I kind of don't want this to be the last conversation."
The honesty of it filled the car completely.
Not dramatic.
Not desperate.
Just true.
Gael's chest tightened at the openness in her expression now.
Then carefully:
"It doesn't have to be."
Haley looked at him for a long second after that.
Searching.
Maybe for pressure.
Maybe for expectation.
But finding neither.
Then she exhaled quietly.
"Okay."
Again that word.
Small.
Still meaningful every time she gave it.
Then she reached for the door handle before pausing halfway.
"Wait."
Gael looked toward her.
Haley frowned slightly like she was annoyed with herself already.
Then she leaned across the center console and kissed him softly.
Quick.
Tentative.
Still enough to stop his breathing for a second.
The kiss lasted maybe two seconds before she pulled back immediately.
Both stared at each other afterward.
Haley looked equally shocked by her own decision.
Then:
"…That may have been impulsive."
Gael laughed softly, still stunned.
"A little."
She covered part of her face with one hand instantly.
"Oh my God."
But she was smiling.
Actually smiling.
Then Haley pointed at him quickly before he could say anything.
"Do not overinterpret that."
"I won't."
"You're already overinterpreting internally."
"Maybe slightly."
She groaned dramatically and leaned back against the seat.
"This is why I need supervision."
Then after another second, her expression softened again.
And when she looked at him this time, the warmth in her eyes no longer felt accidental.
Still cautious.
Still healing.
But undeniably there.
Then quietly:
"Text me when you get home."
The same words Gloria said earlier.
Different meaning.
Same intimacy.
Gael nodded slowly.
"I will."
Haley lingered one second longer before finally opening the door and stepping out into the night air.
But before closing it, she leaned slightly back toward him.
And with the faintest hint of the old teasing warmth in her voice, she added:
"You're still on probation, by the way."
Then she shut the door and walked toward the house smiling to herself before she could stop it.
