Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 260: Walking Slowly Back

By the time they finished eating, the city outside had softened into evening light and scattered reflections across windows and wet pavement.

Neither of them rushed to leave.

The plates sat mostly empty now, abandoned while conversation drifted naturally between lighter topics and heavier ones without either forcing it.

It reminded Haley painfully of before.

Not the beginning of their relationship.

The middle.

The comfortable part.

Then she caught herself thinking that and immediately sighed.

"What?"

"You know exactly what."

Gael smiled slightly.

"That obvious?"

"Yes." Haley leaned back in her chair. "I keep accidentally relaxing around you and it's ruining my narrative."

"That sounds serious."

"It is serious." She pointed toward him with mock accusation. "I had a whole independent woman recovery arc planned."

"And now?"

"Now I'm sitting here wondering if I should steal one of your fries again."

He pushed the basket slightly toward her.

Haley looked offended.

"Wow. That easy?"

"You were going to take them anyway."

"That's fair."

She stole another fry immediately.

Then silence settled again—not empty, just comfortable enough that neither felt pressured to fill every second.

Eventually Haley looked toward the street thoughtfully.

"You know what I think scared me most?"

Gael stayed quiet.

Not interrupting had always been one of the things she loved about talking to him.

Then she continued softly.

"That if I forgave you too quickly…" Her fingers traced lightly along the edge of the table. "It would mean what happened wasn't a big deal."

That hit hard because it made perfect sense.

Then Haley looked back at him.

"And it was a big deal."

"I know."

"You broke something."

The words carried no anger now.

Just grief.

Then she swallowed once before continuing.

"But I don't think you broke everything."

The sentence settled between them with quiet weight.

Because that was the closest thing to hope either of them had heard in weeks.

Then Gael leaned forward slightly.

"I don't expect things to go back to normal."

Haley nodded immediately.

"Good." A small pause. "Because I don't think they can."

And strangely, neither of them seemed devastated by that anymore.

Maybe because tonight already proved something important:

different didn't automatically mean ruined.

Then Haley glanced at him carefully.

"You really are trying."

"Yes."

No hesitation.

That mattered.

Then she smiled faintly to herself.

"You know what's annoying?" Her eyes lifted toward his again. "Part of me believes you."

The honesty in that almost undid him.

Because Haley trusting someone again after pain was never casual.

It was deliberate.

Careful.
