Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 256: No Destination Yet

Neither of them mentioned where they were actually going.

That realization hit Haley about ten minutes into the drive.

She looked out the window at unfamiliar streets before frowning slightly.

"Wait."

Gael glanced toward her briefly.

"What?"

"Where are we going?"

He smiled faintly.

"I was hoping you'd decide eventually."

Haley stared at him for a second.

"That's either considerate or extremely poor planning."

"Still evaluating."

She shook her head lightly, fighting another smile.

Then she settled back into the seat again, strangely comfortable with not knowing yet.

That alone felt significant.

Because a month ago uncertainty around him felt terrifying.

Now it mostly felt… open.

Then Haley crossed one leg beneath herself slightly and looked out at the city passing by.

"You know what I realized today?"

"What?"

"I spent weeks acting like missing you made me weak." Her voice softened thoughtfully. "But honestly, I think pretending I didn't miss you was harder."

Gael tightened his grip on the wheel slightly.

Because hearing her admit these things so openly again felt almost unreal after weeks of distance.

Then Haley laughed softly under her breath.

"You really messed me up."

"I know."

"No, like genuinely." She looked toward him now. "I still don't know what to do with the fact that I can be angry at you and still feel safe around you at the same time."

That hit deeper.

Because safety mattered enormously to Haley.

Then Gael answered carefully.

"You don't have to solve everything tonight."

Haley studied him for a second after that.

Then she nodded faintly.

"Good." A small pause. "Because I definitely can't."

The honesty between them felt easier now.

Less forced.

Then Haley suddenly narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

"Did mom coach you today?"

He blinked once.

"What?"

"You're being passive." She pointed accusingly. "That's suspicious."

Gael laughed quietly.

"Alex threatened me."

"That sounds more believable."

Then her expression softened again.

"She really likes you still."

The sentence carried more complexity than the words themselves.

Because Haley knew exactly how protective Alex had become lately.

How quickly she shut people out if they hurt someone she loved.

And yet Alex still talked about him gently.

That mattered to Haley more than she fully realized.

Then quieter:

"She told me not to rush myself with you."

Gael's chest tightened slightly.

That sounded exactly like Alex.

Then Haley looked ahead again thoughtfully.

"You know what's weird?"

"What?"

"I trust her judgment even when I don't trust my own right now."

The vulnerability in the statement settled softly through the car.

Because Haley had spent weeks emotionally disoriented,

questioning everything:

love,

loyalty,

her own instincts.

And through all of it, Alex remained the one steady point she leaned toward.

Then Haley suddenly looked toward him again.

"Okay serious question."

"I'm concerned already."

"You should be." A faint smile touched her mouth. "Are we driving aimlessly because you're nervous about ending the night too early?"

Gael glanced at her briefly before answering honestly.

"…Maybe."

Haley laughed softly and leaned her head back against the seat.

And hearing that sound again—light, unguarded, real—made the entire city feel quieter around them somehow.
