Chapter 239: The Next Complication
The calm between them lasted until Gloria noticed his expression shift slightly.
Subtle.
But enough.
Years of reading people made her catch it immediately.
"What?"
Gael hesitated for the first time all afternoon.
Interesting.
Then Gloria sat up slightly against the couch cushions, studying him carefully.
"That face means there's another disaster waiting for me."
"That dramatic?"
"Yes."
He exhaled softly before answering.
"I need to tell you something before this goes any further."
The seriousness in his voice made her chest tighten immediately.
Then quietly:
"Alex and I decided something."
Gloria frowned faintly.
"What kind of something?"
Gael looked directly at her.
"We're going to keep our relationship hidden from Haley for now."
Silence.
Not shocked silence.
Processing silence.
Then Gloria leaned back slowly.
"Because she still trusts Alex the most."
"Yes."
The immediate answer hurt because it was true.
Then he explained carefully.
"Alex thinks if Haley finds out now…" He looked away briefly. "It'll break her in a way she might never fully recover from."
Gloria closed her eyes softly.
Because yes.
She could see it too.
Haley already felt emotionally unsafe everywhere.
Learning about Alex right now would destroy the last stable emotional space she still had.
Then quieter:
"So what's the plan?"
Gael hesitated slightly.
Another bad sign.
Then:
"She wants Haley to slowly see us becoming close over time." A pause. "Naturally. Publicly. As friends first."
Gloria stared at him.
And she understood the architecture immediately.
Not sudden revelation.
Gradual emotional adjustment.
Then she whispered softly:
"Oh…"
Not horror.
Recognition.
Because emotionally, the plan actually made sense.
That was the terrifying part.
Then Gael continued carefully.
"She wants Haley to accept me and Claire and you first." His eyes met Gloria's again. "And then eventually tell her the truth herself."
The room fell quiet again afterward.
Gloria looked toward the fading sunlight near the windows thoughtfully.
"She's trying to protect Haley."
"Yes."
"And herself."
Another immediate honesty.
That mattered.
Then Gloria exhaled slowly.
"She already loves you that much."
Not a question.
A realization.
Gael stayed silent for a moment before answering quietly.
"Yes."
Gloria absorbed that carefully.
Then softer:
"You know what worries me?"
"What?"
"That Alex will destroy herself trying to make this easier for Haley." Her voice lowered slightly. "Because she'll keep sacrificing pieces of herself to protect everyone else."
That sounded exactly like Alex.
Then Gloria looked back toward him seriously.
"You need to be careful with her."
"I know."
"No." Her tone sharpened slightly. "I mean really careful." A pause. "Alex loves quietly at first. But once she fully gives herself emotionally…" Gloria shook her head faintly. "She won't survive feeling abandoned."
The warning settled heavily between them.
Because unlike Claire or Gloria—
Alex's emotions ran incredibly deep beneath control and intellect.
Then Gloria whispered:
"And Haley finding out badly could make her lose both of you at once."
That was the true nightmare scenario.
Then silence settled again while the reality of the situation expanded further around them.
Finally Gloria laughed softly under her breath.
"You realize this stopped being a scandal and became a full emotional ecosystem."
"That sounds concerning."
"It is concerning." She pointed lightly at him. "You are basically running an complicated commune."
That finally pulled a small laugh from him again.
Then Gloria leaned back into his arms slowly afterward.
