Chapter 208: A Future With No Shape Yet
Claire stayed sitting at the edge of the desk long after he finished speaking.
The office felt strangely quiet now.
Not tense.
Not chaotic.
Just emotionally enormous.
Because for the first time since everything collapsed, somebody had finally said the impossible thing aloud without flinching from it.
Not:
choose one person.
Not:
suppress the feelings.
Not:
pretend this never happened.
Instead:
honesty,
choice,
coexistence.
Claire should have rejected it immediately.
Part of her knew that.
Another part—
the exhausted, emotionally starving part—
felt something dangerously close to relief.
Then she whispered quietly:
"You make impossible things sound reasonable."
Gael smiled faintly.
"No. I make them sound possible."
That distinction landed heavily.
Claire looked away toward the office windows again, trying to steady herself emotionally.
Outside, life continued normally.
Traffic.
Meetings.
People walking through ordinary afternoons.
Meanwhile her entire understanding of love and loyalty was quietly being rebuilt from the ground up.
Then she asked the question sitting deepest underneath everything.
"What if Haley never accepts this?"
The pain in her voice softened the room immediately.
Because no future mattered to Claire if it completely destroyed her daughter.
Gael answered honestly.
"Then I keep trying until she does." A small pause. "And if she can't…" He exhaled slowly. "I'll still never lie to her again."
That mattered to Claire more than she expected.
Not perfection.
Not certainty.
Commitment to honesty.
Then quieter:
"And Alex?"
The name still sounded surreal coming from her.
Gael's expression shifted subtly.
Softer.
Claire noticed immediately.
And strangely—
instead of jealousy—
she felt recognition.
Because she knew that expression already.
Knew exactly what emotional understanding looked like when it started becoming attachment.
Then he answered:
"She sees people too clearly to survive dishonesty." A faint smile touched his mouth. "So I stopped trying."
Claire laughed softly under her breath despite herself.
"That sounds exactly like her."
Then reality hit her again suddenly.
"You realize if this ever comes out publicly, the family implodes."
"Yes."
No denial.
No fantasy.
Just acceptance of the risk.
Then Claire stood slowly and crossed toward him again.
Not out of passion this time.
Need.
She rested both hands lightly against his chest and searched his face carefully.
"You really think love is enough for something this complicated?"
The vulnerability in the question felt almost unbearably raw.
Because Claire wasn't asking theoretically anymore.
She was asking whether this impossible thing could actually survive reality.
Gael looked directly into her eyes.
"No."
That answer surprised her.
Then he continued quietly:
"Love isn't enough by itself." A pause. "Trust is. Honesty is. Choosing each other repeatedly is."
The words settled deep inside her.
Because suddenly this stopped sounding like reckless emotional collapse…
and started sounding like deliberate construction.
Dangerous.
Fragile.
Possibly doomed.
But intentional.
Then Claire leaned forward and kissed him again softly.
Not desperate this time.
Thoughtful.
And when she pulled back, her voice sounded quieter than he'd ever heard it before.
"I don't know what my life is becoming anymore."
Gael brushed gently against her cheek.
"Then we figure it out honestly this time."
And for the first time since Haley found out—
Claire felt something other than guilt when thinking about the future.
Hope.
