Chapter 200: Before She Leaves
For a while neither of them spoke after that.
Alex's confession lingered softly in the room:
I'm happy right now.
Simple sentence.
Terrifying truth.
Because happiness was exactly what made this dangerous.
Not obsession.
Not manipulation.
Real emotional fulfillment.
Then Alex finally sat up slowly from against his chest, though her hand lingered in his for another few seconds before she let go.
The loss of contact felt immediate.
She noticed that too.
Then she stood and grabbed her bag from beside the couch, taking a long breath like she was preparing to step back into reality.
"I need to become a functioning person again."
"You already are."
"That's objectively false."
But she smiled faintly anyway.
Then her expression softened as she looked at him standing there beneath the dim penthouse lights.
And suddenly the emotional reality hit her again with full force:
she chose this.
Knowingly.
Then quietly:
"You realize I'm going to overthink every second of tonight for the next three years."
"Only three?"
Alex narrowed her eyes immediately.
"Don't flirt when I'm destabilized."
That definitely sounded like flirting itself now.
Not awkward.
Just reluctant.
Because neither of them wanted the night to end even though both knew it had to.
Then Alex stepped closer again slowly.
Not rushed this time.
Intentional.
Her hand rested lightly against his chest while she looked up at him carefully.
"You know what scares me most?"
"What?"
"That this already feels significant enough to change me."
The vulnerability in the statement landed deeply.
Because Alex rarely admitted when something had power over her emotionally.
Then softer:
"I'm used to being the observer in relationships." A faint humorless smile touched her mouth. "I analyze them. Predict them. Avoid becoming consumed by them."
"And now?"
Alex looked directly into his eyes.
"Now I understand why people risk everything anyway."
That sentence changed the atmosphere again instantly.
Not because it was dramatic.
Because it was honest.
Then she kissed him once more.
Slow.
Deep.
Deliberate.
Not desperate heat this time.
Connection.
And somehow that felt even more dangerous.
Then she pulled back reluctantly and rested her forehead briefly against his.
"We move carefully from now on."
"Yes."
"No lies."
"Yes."
"And no letting this become another disaster built on avoidance."
"Agreed."
Alex nodded faintly like she needed the structure.
Then finally she stepped back.
Actually leaving this time.
At the elevator doors, she paused and looked over her shoulder toward him.
The penthouse suddenly felt different now:
not just the place where her family fractured,
but the place where she crossed into something irreversible herself.
Then she laughed softly under her breath.
"I cannot believe I'm about to go home and act normal around Haley."
Reality crashing back in again.
The guilt flickered visibly across her face.
Gael noticed immediately.
Alex saw that too and exhaled slowly.
"I know." Her voice softened. "I'm still choosing this anyway."
Final honesty.
Then the elevator doors opened.
And before stepping inside, Alex looked at him one last time that night.
Not uncertain anymore.
Just overwhelmed by the magnitude of what they had started.
