Chapter 197: Lines Drawn Consciously
The elevator ride back up felt surreal.
Not awkward.
Not uncertain.
Charged.
Alex stood beside him with her arms folded loosely, trying and failing to regulate the emotional heat still rushing through her system.
Every few seconds she became painfully aware of:
his hand brushing hers slightly,
the memory of the kiss,
the fact she consciously chose to stay.
Then the elevator doors opened back into the penthouse.
The moment they stepped inside, the restraint between them snapped again almost immediately.
Alex barely had time to drop her bag near the couch before Gael pulled her gently back toward him, lifting her off the ground in a hug as she crossed her legs around his waist.
And this time she kissed him first.
Weeks of tension,
loneliness,
fear,
recognition—
all collapsing together.
The kiss deepened quickly, overwhelming in a way Alex had never experienced before because this wasn't built on fantasy.
It was built on understanding.
Gael's hands moved carefully along her ass and back, pulling her closer while Alex tangled both her hands on his head, kissing him like a starved beast.
Heat flooded through her immediately.
No wonder Haley and Claire lost themselves emotionally around him.
That realization flashed through Alex's mind right before she kissed him again anyway.
Then Gael backed her slowly against the wall beside the penthouse windows, the city lights glowing behind them while Alex's breathing turned uneven.
Everything felt too intense.
Too fast.
And yet she still wanted more.
That terrified her.
Then his hand slid carefully against her breast and Alex froze slightly.
Tiny reaction.
Still enough.
Gael stopped immediately.
The entire atmosphere shifted from heat to awareness in a second.
Alex looked up at him breathing hard, pulse racing.
"I—"
"You don't have to explain."
The immediate gentleness in his voice almost undid her more than the kiss itself.
Because there was no frustration.
No pressure.
Just attention.
Then he rested his forehead lightly against hers.
"We stop wherever you want."
Alex closed her eyes briefly.
Relief hit so hard it almost hurt.
Not because she regretted kissing him.
Because she needed to know the intensity wouldn't erase her ability to choose.
Then quieter:
"I'm not ready for…" She exhaled shakily. "Everything."
"I know."
And somehow him understanding without needing management from her made the attachment deepen even further.
Then Alex laughed softly once against his shoulder.
"This is genuinely the worst possible situation for me."
Gael smiled faintly against her hair.
"Probably."
Then after another long kiss—
slower this time,
less desperate—
They finally moved toward the couch.
The emotional atmosphere remained heated but steadier now.
Conscious.
Alex curled one leg beneath herself while trying unsuccessfully to calm her heartbeat.
Then reality returned fully.
Haley.
Claire.
Gloria.
The family.
Alex rubbed at her forehead.
"Okay." Deep breath. "We need an actual plan before this becomes an apocalypse."
Gael leaned back slightly against the couch, watching her carefully.
Alex pointed immediately.
"No looking calm. I'm trying to strategize."
"That sounds familiar."
"Shut up."
But she smiled faintly anyway.
Then her expression sobered again.
"First rule: Haley comes first."
Immediate answer.
"Yes."
That mattered to Alex visibly.
Then she continued:
"She's already barely holding herself together emotionally." A pause. "If she finds out about us right now, it'll destroy her."
True.
Then Alex folded her arms tighter.
"So whatever this is…" She gestured vaguely between them. "It stays private until we figure out whether there's even a future that doesn't completely annihilate everyone."
Gael nodded slowly.
Then quieter:
"And Claire and Gloria?"
The room shifted again immediately.
Because now they were discussing the impossible openly.
Alex stared toward the city lights for several seconds before answering.
"You love them." Not a question. "And I'm not pretending I didn't agree to this knowing that."
The honesty in the statement carried real emotional maturity underneath it.
Then she looked back at him carefully.
"But if this becomes secret emotional chaos again instead of deliberate choices…" Her voice hardened slightly. "I walk away."
Clear boundary.
Alex boundary.
Then softer:
"I won't become another person drowning slowly while everybody lies to themselves."
Silence settled afterward.
Heavy.
Real.
Then Gael reached for her hand slowly.
Alex let him take it.
And for one quiet moment beneath the penthouse lights—
the future ahead of them looked impossibly complicated,
emotionally dangerous,
and completely real.
