Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 187: Slippery Ground

The shift happened gradually enough that neither of them fully noticed it at first.

That was the pattern now.

Emotional proximity becoming emotional dependence quietly,

through repetition instead of intention.

Alex started texting him outside crisis conversations.

At first:

updates about Haley,

questions about Claire,

logistical things.

Then increasingly:

sarcastic observations,

screenshots of terrible prompts,

random thoughts she normally kept to herself.

And Gael answered.

Too quickly sometimes.

One night she texted him at 1:14 AM:

Alex: do you think healthy people actually exist or is that propaganda

He stared at the message longer than necessary before replying.

Gael: phil probably comes closest

Three dots appeared immediately.

Alex: horrifying answer honestly

He laughed quietly to himself in the dark penthouse kitchen.

And then paused.

Because suddenly the familiarity of the moment hit him:

late-night emotional intimacy,

shared understanding,

ease.

The next afternoon Alex arrived again carrying two coffees and visible academic frustration.

"I'm beginning to think higher education is a pyramid scheme."

"That sounds expensive."

"It is."

She settled into the penthouse couch automatically now.

Like someone already comfortable in the space.

Another dangerous development.

Then Alex noticed the untouched food container near the kitchen.

"You forgot to eat again."

Gael looked over briefly.

"I was working."

Alex rolled her eyes immediately.

"That's not how biology functions."

The casual domesticity of the exchange landed strangely for both of them.

Not romantic.

Familiar.

Then Alex froze slightly after realizing it too.

Because unlike Claire and Gloria—

Alex noticed emotional patterns early.

That self-awareness made this more dangerous, not less.

Then she covered the moment quickly by opening her laptop.

"Anyway. Distract me before I write an essay titled: 'Trauma Made Me Interesting.'"

Gael crossed toward the kitchen island slowly.

"That would probably get accepted."

"Stanford respects emotional damage aesthetically, not structurally."

That pulled another laugh from him.

And Alex smiled faintly afterward without looking up from the screen.

There it was again.

That tiny unconscious softening whenever she made him laugh.

Then silence settled comfortably between them while she worked.

Not awkward silence.

Companionable silence.

The kind built through familiarity.

About twenty minutes later Alex looked up from her laptop suddenly.

"You know what I realized today?"

"What?"

"I haven't actually processed any of this emotionally."

Alex leaned back against the couch with visible exhaustion.

"I've been too busy stabilizing everyone else." A humorless smile touched her mouth. "Classic eldest-daughter side quest."

"You're not the eldest."

"Emotionally I absolutely am."

Fair.

Then quieter:

"I think everybody assumes I'm okay because I understand things quickly."

That sentence landed harder than she intended.

Because underneath Alex's composure lived the same emotional devastation everyone else carried.

She just intellectualized hers faster.

Then she looked toward him carefully.

"And honestly?" Small pause. "Sometimes you're the only person I can talk to about this without managing their emotions first."

The room went still after that.

Because suddenly the emotional risk became visible to both of them at the exact same time.

Alex noticed it immediately.

Of course she did.

Then she laughed softly once under her breath.

"Oh my God."

Gael stayed quiet.

Alex stared at him in dawning horror.

"We're doing it again."
