Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 183: Keeping Manny Outside It

Gloria waited until Manny's footsteps faded upstairs again before speaking.

Her voice dropped immediately afterward.

"He notices my moods too easily."

Haley understood what she really meant:

not that Manny suspected anything,

but that he cared enough to keep asking questions if the sadness became too visible.

Then Haley said quietly:

"He loves you a lot."

Manny's love had always been uncomplicated.

Open.

Protective.

Gloria realized she would do almost anything to keep him from ever looking at her differently.

Then softly:

"I can't let him get dragged into this."

Because Gloria wasn't just protecting herself anymore.

She was protecting the family around Manny:

his trust in family,

in relationships,

in her.

Then Haley shifted slightly beneath the blankets.

"I don't think you should tell grandpa."

The sentence surprised Gloria enough that she sat up straighter.

"What?"

Haley exhaled slowly.

Not because she was certain.

Because she was exhausted.

"I'm not saying what happened was okay." Her voice tightened slightly. "But if nothing physical happened and you stop this now…" She swallowed once. "I don't know if blowing up two families helps anybody."

Haley was once again trying to manage fallout instead of centering her own pain.

Then Gloria whispered carefully:

"You shouldn't be the one making these decisions."

"But somebody has to."

That answer landed heavily.

Because the adults responsible kept emotionally freezing between guilt and longing while Haley kept forcing herself into pragmatic thinking instead.

Then quieter:

"I just want things to stop getting worse."

Simple goal.

Almost impossible now.

Gloria closed her eyes briefly.

Because deep down, part of her knew Haley was trying to preserve what remained of the family rather than punish anyone.

Then Haley asked softly:

"Have you talked to Mom today?"

"Yes."

"How is she?"

Despite everything, Haley still loved Claire fiercely.

"She's devastated."

Haley laughed softly once.

"So am I."

The honesty settled gently between them.

No anger.

Just exhaustion.

Then Gloria leaned back in the patio chair and looked up toward the dark sky.

"You know it scares me that eventually this all becomes normal."

Haley frowned faintly.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean…" Gloria struggled for the words. "People adapt to pain faster than they should." A small pause. "I'm scared one day we all wake up and learn how to live around this instead of fixing it."

Haley already felt it happening:

the careful dinners,

the avoidance,

the adjusted distance.

The family bending around the damage instead of confronting it.

Then Haley whispered quietly:

"I think we already started."

Neither of them spoke after that.

Because both knew she was right.
