Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 177 177: Protective Instincts

The front door closed behind Haley and Dylan softly.

Phil watched it for a second too long before looking back toward the room.

"She's really hurting."

No one answered immediately.

Because now the pain had become impossible to hide completely.

Even Luke sensed it.

The house itself felt thinner without Haley's energy filling it.

Then Phil sighed softly and stood from the couch.

"I'm going to clean the garage." He pointed toward everyone vaguely. "Nobody spiral while I'm gone."

"That feels impossible in this family," Alex replied.

Phil smiled faintly and disappeared outside.

The second the back door shut, silence settled over the room again.

Luke looked between Claire and Alex awkwardly.

"Okay, are we pretending this is normal or…?"

Alex immediately stepped in.

"Haley's overwhelmed."

Luke frowned.

"Yeah, obviously." He looked toward Claire. "But why's Mom acting like someone died?"

Claire physically looked away.

And for the first time, Luke noticed that reaction too.

Luke wasn't emotionally analytical like Alex.

But he was perceptive about emotional tone.

Then Alex stood quickly.

"Luke, can you help Dad?"

"That means no."

"That means go away."

Luke pointed accusingly.

"You people are hiding something."

Claire's chest tightened instantly.

Then Alex crossed toward him and shoved the donut box into his hands.

"Take the doughnuts and leave."

Luke narrowed his eyes suspiciously.

Still—

he went.

The second he disappeared outside, Alex exhaled slowly and rubbed at her forehead.

"That was close."

Claire sank into one of the dining chairs heavily.

"I can't do this."

The words came out smaller than she intended.

Not dramatic.

Just exhausted.

Alex looked at her carefully for a few seconds before softening slightly.

"Mom."

That single word nearly made Claire cry again.

Because despite everything, Alex was still trying to protect her too.

Then Claire whispered:

"He looked at me this morning and told me I was a good mother."

The shame in her voice filled the room instantly.

Alex sat down across from her slowly.

"You made terrible decisions." A pause. "That doesn't erase your entire life."

Claire laughed softly once without humor.

"It feels like it should."

Then quieter:

"Haley used to tell me everything."

Mother and daughter weren't just close.

They were emotionally intertwined.

And now Haley was seeking safety elsewhere:

Dylan,

Alex,

distance.

Then Alex looked toward the front door where Haley had left minutes earlier.

"I think she's trying really hard not to hate any of you."

Hatred would have been simpler emotionally.

Love mixed with betrayal forced Haley into constant internal conflict instead.

Then Alex continued softly:

"She keeps protecting everybody even while she's breaking."

That sounded painfully accurate.

Protecting Phil.

Protecting the family.

Protecting even Claire and Gloria from immediate destruction.

Then Alex leaned back in her chair slowly.

"And honestly?" Her voice tightened slightly. "I'm starting to get angry at all of you for letting her carry that."

Because Haley—

the youngest involved person in the situation—

had somehow become the one managing consequences most responsibly.
