Chapter 175 175: Unstable Balance
Gloria cried quietly after that.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just soft, devastated silence on the other end of the phone while Haley sat curled against her headboard staring at nothing.
"I'm sorry," Gloria whispered finally.
The apology sounded real enough to hurt.
Haley believed her.
That was part of the problem.
Then Gloria spoke again, voice trembling:
"If I could go backward, I would stop this before it ever touched you."
Haley closed her eyes briefly.
Because she believed that too.
And somehow believing the sincerity behind everyone's regret made the betrayal harder instead of easier.
Then quietly:
"But you still miss him."
The silence that followed confirmed everything.
Haley laughed once under her breath.
Tiny.
Broken.
"That's what hurts me."
Because now she understood the true scale of the attachment involved.
This wasn't a crush.
Not temporary temptation.
Even after exposure,
even after guilt,
part of Gloria still loved him.
And Haley knew her mother felt the same.
Then Gloria whispered:
"I hate myself for that."
Haley looked down at the blanket gathered in her hands.
"I don't think I want you to hate yourself."
That stunned Gloria into silence.
Because even now—
deeply hurt—
Haley's instinct was still compassion.
Then Haley continued softly:
"I just need everybody to stop pretending feelings don't become choices eventually."
Then downstairs, Claire stood alone in the kitchen pretending to reorganize groceries while listening to Phil explain real-estate podcasts enthusiastically.
Normal marriage sounds.
The contrast felt surreal now.
Then Phil noticed she'd stopped responding.
"You okay?"
Claire forced herself back into the moment.
"Yeah."
Phil smiled faintly.
"You've said 'yeah' like seventeen times this week."
Then his expression softened further.
"You know you can tell me if something's wrong, right?"
Phil kept offering honesty while she kept choosing concealment.
Then he crossed toward her and rested his hands lightly on her shoulders.
"I miss you a little."
And suddenly Claire realized something terrifying:
She'd become so emotionally consumed by crisis management that she hadn't fully noticed the damage already happening inside her marriage itself.
Phil noticed distance.
Absence.
Emotional withdrawal.
He just interpreted it as stress instead of betrayal.
Then he smiled softly.
"Maybe we should go away somewhere."
Claire froze.
Because the irony felt unbearable.
Then Phil continued warmly:
"Just us. Reset a little."
Claire almost started crying right there in the kitchen.
Not because she didn't love him.
Because she did.
That was the tragedy.
Then upstairs, Haley finally whispered into the phone:
"I don't know how to trust any of you the same way again."
The sentence settled into silence afterward like something final beginning to form.
