Chapter 167: Damage Control
Claire sat in the backyard long after Alex went back inside.
The coffee grew cold in her hands while her thoughts spiraled endlessly through the same unbearable truths:
Haley knew,
Alex knew,
Phil didn't,
and every next decision now carried the weight of potential destruction.
The terrifying part was that Alex was right.
This still wasn't irreversible.
Not fully.
No physical affair.
No public explosion.
No direct betrayal Phil could point to concretely.
The family stood at the edge of collapse—
not over it yet.
But only barely.
Then the back door opened again quietly.
Alex returned carrying her laptop and sat across from Claire near the pool.
No sarcasm this time.
No distance.
Just exhaustion.
For a while neither spoke.
Then Alex finally said:
"Haley texted me."
Claire's chest tightened instantly.
"What did she say?"
Alex looked down at the screen briefly.
"She said she's safe and doesn't want anyone following her."
That sounded exactly like Haley right now:
hurt,
but still managing everyone else emotionally at the same time.
Then Alex hesitated.
"She also asked if I knew."
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
"And?"
"I said no." Alex looked up carefully. "About before now, I mean."
Claire nodded slowly.
Then quieter:
"Does she hate me?"
Alex didn't answer immediately.
That silence hurt enough already.
Finally:
"No."
Claire almost looked relieved before Alex continued.
"She's devastated though."
The honesty landed hard.
Because hatred would've been simpler emotionally.
Love mixed with betrayal was infinitely messier.
Then Alex folded one leg beneath herself in the chair and looked toward the pool thoughtfully.
"You know what's weird?" she asked quietly. "I think Haley's more worried about the family than herself right now."
That sounded painfully accurate.
Then Alex continued:
"She kept asking if Dad knows." A small pause. "And whether Gloria's marriage is going to implode too."
Claire physically looked away after hearing that.
Because Haley shouldn't have been carrying those fears.
Not because of her.
Then Alex's voice softened further.
"She still loves you."
That almost broke Claire completely.
Because she didn't deserve it anymore.
Then Alex asked the question that had been sitting between them since the conversation started.
"What are you going to do about Gael?"
Direct.
Necessary.
Claire stared out across the pool for several seconds before answering.
"I don't know."
True answer.
Terrifying answer.
Because even now—
after all this damage—
part of her still wanted him.
The work.
The feeling of herself around him.
Alex noticed immediately.
And suddenly she looked older than Claire had ever seen her.
"You can't keep standing in the middle anymore."
Because that's exactly what Claire had been doing:
trying to preserve everyone simultaneously while emotionally drifting farther into danger.
Then Alex leaned forward slightly.
"If you still keep seeing him after this…" She swallowed once. "You're choosing something."
Claire understood the weight of that instantly.
Then Alex looked toward the house again where Phil's muffled voice drifted faintly from inside while Luke complained about garage tools.
Family sounds.
Normal sounds.
Fragile sounds now.
Then softly:
"I think you need to decide what matters before somebody else decides for you."
