Chapter 164 164: The Wrong Person
Claire had imagined Haley looking at her differently.
That pain nearly destroyed her already.
But Alex?
Alex's disappointment felt quieter.
Sharper.
Because Alex understood consequences structurally.
Not just emotionally.
She stood across the backyard with her arms folded tightly, trying to process the reality of her mother becoming someone morally complicated in a way that could genuinely destroy the family.
Then she asked the question Claire had been dreading unconsciously since Haley found out.
"Is Gloria also involved?"
Claire looked up immediately.
And the second Alex saw her expression—
another piece clicked into place.
Alex stared at her mother in complete disbelief.
"No."
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
"You cannot be serious."
Claire's silence answered for her.
And suddenly, Alex looked overwhelmed, trying to process the insanity of it.
"Mom." She shook her head slowly. "Please tell me Gloria isn't involved in this somehow."
Claire still couldn't speak.
That was enough.
Alex physically stepped backward again.
"Oh my God."
The realization hit her all at once now:
the rooftop tension,
the weird atmosphere,
Gloria disappearing downstairs that night,
the strange looks between adults she thought she imagined.
Everything rearranged itself into horrifying clarity.
Then Alex whispered:
"You and Gloria both fell for Haley's boyfriend?"
The sentence sounded surreal spoken aloud.
Claire wrapped her arms around herself tightly.
"It wasn't supposed to happen."
Alex stared at her.
"That's your defense?"
"No."
Because there was no defense.
Then Alex rubbed hard at her forehead like she was trying to force reality back into coherence.
"This is insane."
"Does Haley know about Gloria too?"
Claire nodded once.
Alex closed her eyes immediately afterward.
"Oh God."
Now the full emotional cruelty landed for her too:
Haley discovering not one betrayal,
but multiple,
all interconnected,
all hidden behind family warmth and concern.
Then Alex looked back toward her mother slowly.
"You were all standing in rooms together knowing this?"
Claire physically flinched at the question.
Because yes.
They were.
Family dinners.
Rooftops.
Kitchen conversations.
All layered with hidden emotional tension Haley couldn't fully see until now.
Then Alex whispered:
"How could you do that to her?"
There it was.
The question Claire had no answer for.
Because intentions no longer mattered.
Loneliness didn't matter.
Emotional confusion didn't matter.
Haley still got hurt.
Then Alex's expression shifted again.
And suddenly Claire realized something terrifying:
Alex wasn't just disappointed in her.
She was afraid for her now too.
"Dad's going to find out eventually."
The sentence entered the backyard quietly.
Still devastating.
Claire looked away immediately.
Because she knew.
Then Alex continued softly:
"And when he does…" She swallowed once. "I don't know how this family survives it."
That was the first time someone besides Haley said it aloud.
Not:
this relationship.
Not:
this situation.
This family.
The whole structure.
Then Alex laughed once under her breath.
Small.
Broken.
"I spent my entire childhood thinking our family's chaos was harmless because we always loved each other underneath it."
Her eyes met Claire's again.
"But this isn't harmless."
