Chapter 162 162: Pressure
Nobody moved for several seconds after the door closed.
The kitchen sat in stunned silence while the emotional aftershock settled over the room.
Phil looked between Claire and the front door with confusion growing into concern.
"That wasn't normal."
No one answered immediately.
Because nobody knew how.
Claire stared down at her untouched coffee while trying desperately to hold her expression together.
Across the table, Alex watched her carefully now.
The pieces weren't fully assembled yet.
But Alex knew enough to recognize:
Haley was genuinely hurt,
Claire looked guilty,
and something serious had happened.
Then Phil spoke again, softer this time.
"Claire."
That voice nearly broke her composure.
Because it carried trust.
Love.
Partnership.
Everything she suddenly felt unworthy of.
"I don't know," Claire lied quietly.
Alex immediately looked unconvinced.
Because Alex had spent years decoding emotional inconsistencies inside this family.
And Claire's behavior right now felt wrong.
Then Luke spoke unexpectedly.
"Did Haley break up with Gael?"
The entire kitchen stilled.
Claire physically froze for half a second too long.
Alex noticed instantly.
Phil noticed too.
And suddenly the atmosphere shifted.
"Wait," Phil said slowly. "Did something happen with Gael?"
Claire forced herself to recover.
"No."
Again:
too fast.
Alex leaned back slightly in her chair now, eyes narrowing with growing recognition.
Not fully understanding yet.
But close enough to become dangerous.
Then Phil rubbed lightly at his forehead.
"She looked heartbroken."
"And she looked at you like she was hurt by you specifically."
No answer.
Claire could not produce one.
Then Alex stood slowly from the table.
She didn't look judgmental yet.
She looked worried.
"Mom," she said carefully, "what happened?"
The sincerity in her daughter's voice almost shattered Claire completely.
Because suddenly she realized something horrible:
Haley wasn't the only relationship at risk anymore.
If the truth emerged fully, she could lose Alex's trust too.
Luke's.
Phil's.
Everyone's.
The fallout would spread through the entire family structure exactly like Haley predicted.
Then Claire stood abruptly.
"I need air."
Classic avoidance.
Alex noticed immediately.
"Mom."
Claire stopped moving.
And when she finally looked back toward her daughter, the pain in her expression stunned the room into silence.
Because suddenly everyone understood this wasn't a normal argument.
Something deeper had broken.
Then Claire left the kitchen before anyone could stop her.
The backyard felt cold and painfully bright after the emotional pressure inside.
Claire wrapped both arms around herself and stood near the pool trying to breathe through the panic building in her chest.
A few seconds later, the back door opened again.
Alex.
Of course.
Claire laughed softly once under her breath without humor.
"You always follow disasters."
Alex stepped closer slowly.
"That's because nobody in this family communicates directly until things are catastrophic."
Then Alex looked at her mother carefully.
And for the first time since childhood—
Claire realized her daughter was emotionally mature enough to truly see her now.
Not just as:
Mom.
As a person.
Complicated.
Flawed.
Capable of terrible mistakes.
The realization terrified her.
Then Alex asked quietly:
"Is this about Gael?"
And suddenly the world felt very, very small.
