Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 147: First Day

Claire treated the first official workday like a military operation.

Structured schedule.

Professional outfit.

Clear emotional boundaries.

Armor.

She arrived at the penthouse at exactly nine in the morning carrying a laptop bag, color-coded notebooks, and enough determination to psychologically intimidate a corporation.

Gael opened the door and immediately noticed the difference.

Not the outfit.

The posture.

Claire wasn't entering as:

friend,

neighbor,

emotional complication.

She was entering as someone trying very hard to create rules around herself.

Interesting.

"Good morning," he said.

Claire walked past him into the penthouse smoothly.

"I brought organizational systems."

"That sounded threatening."

"It was."

Good.

The sharper rhythm actually helped.

For the first two hours, everything stayed genuinely professional.

Claire was incredible.

She identified inefficiencies almost immediately:

duplicated vendor communication,

scheduling conflicts,

unnecessary outsourcing,

inconsistent property reporting.

Not because she had corporate experience.

Because she'd spent twenty years optimizing chaos inside a family.

Different scale.

Same instincts.

At one point she looked up from the tablet with visible disbelief.

"How are you functioning like this?"

"I was busy."

"You were improvising."

"That too."

Claire shook her head and started reorganizing the entire operations spreadsheet without waiting for permission.

The terrifying part?

She looked energized.

Alive.

More focused than she'd seemed in months.

By lunchtime the penthouse office had transformed into a fully operational planning station while Claire worked through logistics with startling efficiency.

Then she paused suddenly halfway through reviewing contractor schedules.

"Oh my God."

"What?"

"I'm enjoying this."

The horror in her voice made him laugh quietly.

Claire pointed accusingly.

"This is your fault."

"You like competence."

"I like control."

"Tomato Tomahto."

Then Claire stood abruptly.

"I need coffee before this becomes psychologically revealing."

A few minutes later they stood together in the kitchen while the espresso machine hissed softly between them.

The penthouse sunlight reflected across the glass walls while the city stretched endlessly beyond.

And suddenly Claire became aware of something dangerous again:

how natural this felt.

Not illicit.

Not dramatic.

Just compatible.

Then her phone buzzed.

Haley.

Claire checked automatically.

how's my favorite corporate power duo?

Claire froze for half a second.

Gael noticed immediately.

The message itself wasn't suspicious.

The guilt reaction was.

Claire looked down at the phone longer than necessary before typing back:

your mother is currently saving capitalism

Haley immediately replied:

finally someone is

Despite herself, Claire smiled.

And that smile hurt.

Because Haley sounded happy about this.

Excited.

Trusting.

Then Claire lowered the phone slowly.

"We're bad people."

Gael leaned lightly against the counter.

"Nothing's happened."

Claire looked at him directly.

"That stopped being reassuring weeks ago."

Silence settled heavily after that.

Because she was right.

The emotional affair already existed whether either of them wanted to name it fully or not.

Then Claire surprised herself again.

"You know what scares me most now?" she asked softly.

"What?"

She looked around the penthouse kitchen,

the organized schedules,

the calmness,

the sense of capability returning to her piece by piece.

Then back at him.

"I think this might become one of the happiest parts of my life."

And that realization terrified her more than desire ever had.
