Chapter 140 140: The First Real Lie
The family dinner happened three nights later.
That alone felt surreal to Claire.
Not because hosting dinner at Gael's house was strange anymore.
Because everybody accepted it immediately.
Phil brought wine.
Luke carried snacks upstairs like he already lived there.
Alex spread college brochures across the dining table before appetizers even arrived.
Nobody treated the house like somebody else's space anymore.
They treated it like an extension of their own lives.
And Haley—
Haley looked happiest of all.
She moved naturally through the kitchen beside Gael while finishing dinner prep, occasionally bumping into him accidentally-on-purpose, stealing ingredients, laughing softly whenever he corrected her cutting technique.
Domestic.
Easy.
Real.
Claire noticed Gloria noticing it too.
Because Gloria watched Haley tonight with something quieter than jealousy.
Guilt.
The realization shifted the emotional atmosphere immediately.
At one point during dinner, Phil launched into a story about accidentally insulting a contractor through voice-to-text while everyone laughed around the table.
And in the middle of the chaos, Haley reached beneath the table and intertwined her fingers with Gael's automatically.
Tiny gesture.
Still intimate enough that Gloria looked away afterward.
Claire noticed that too.
The emotional pressure around the table had become unbearable for anyone actually aware of the truth underneath it.
Then Jay spoke suddenly from the opposite end of the table.
"You know," he said while looking around casually, "this is the most relaxed Claire's been in months."
Claire froze internally.
Phil looked surprised.
"Really?"
"Yes." Jay pointed his fork lightly toward her. "You stopped looking like you're managing airport security all the time."
Everybody laughed.
Except Claire.
Because the observation hit far too close.
Then Haley smiled immediately.
"See? I told you this place is good for people."
Another innocent statement that felt devastating underneath the surface.
Claire forced a smile and reached for wine before her expression could betray anything.
And that was the moment it happened.
Phil looked toward Claire warmly across the table.
"I'm glad you found somewhere to decompress."
Simple sentence.
Loving sentence.
Trusting sentence.
And Claire smiled back at her husband—
while hiding the actual emotional reason she kept coming there.
The realization hit her instantly afterward.
Hard.
Because for the first time, she wasn't just concealing feelings from herself anymore.
She was actively deceiving someone who loved her.
Across the table, Gael noticed the exact second the realization landed.
Claire looked away immediately afterward.
The rest of dinner blurred slightly after that.
Conversation continued:
Alex discussing Stanford anxieties,
Luke pitching terrible business ideas,
Phil trying to plan rooftop movie nights.
But underneath everything, Claire felt emotionally unsteady now.
Because the situation had finally crossed from:
emotional confusion
into:
dishonesty.
Huge shift.
Then later, while everyone moved toward the rooftop with drinks and dessert, Gloria briefly passed beside Gael alone in the kitchen.
Only a second.
Still enough.
She didn't touch him.
Didn't flirt.
She just spoke quietly without looking directly at him.
"I can't do this much longer."
And for the first time since all of this began—
she sounded genuinely close to breaking.
