Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 138 138: Exposure

Claire stayed frozen for another few seconds after Alex disappeared through the gate.

Then she turned slowly toward him.

"She cannot be allowed to become a psychologist."

"That sounded serious."

"I'm completely serious."

But the humor only covered part of it.

Because underneath the embarrassment sat something much more unsettling:

Alex had noticed the chemistry casually.

Instinctively.

Which meant the emotional tension between them was no longer entirely invisible.

Claire exhaled slowly and walked toward the sink just to move somewhere.

"This is bad."

Gael watched her quietly.

Claire shook her head once while staring out the kitchen window.

"I kept telling myself this existed mostly inside my own head." A small laugh escaped her. "Apparently we're radiating it into the neighborhood now."

The honesty made the room feel smaller again.

Then her phone buzzed.

Haley.

Claire looked down automatically.

leaving work soon

should i bring thai food or emotional instability home

Claire smiled instinctively.

That softened her expression immediately.

And somehow that made the guilt hit even harder.

Because Haley trusted both of them so naturally now.

Claire lowered the phone slowly afterward.

Then Claire leaned both hands against the counter and closed her eyes briefly.

"You know what really scares me?"

Gael didn't answer.

Claire looked back toward him.

"I don't think any of this started because anybody wanted to betray anyone."

That was the truth of it.

No manipulation.

No predatory intent.

No dramatic seduction.

Just emotional proximity growing deeper and deeper until it stopped fitting inside safe boundaries anymore.

Claire folded her arms tightly.

"And honestly?" A humorless smile touched her mouth. "That somehow makes it worse."

Because there was no easy villain to blame.

Then she looked around the kitchen slowly.

The coffee mugs.

Alex's forgotten notes still on the table.

Haley's jacket hanging over the chair.

Evidence of routine.

Integration.

Life.

Claire laughed softly under her breath.

"You know what the problem is?" she asked. "Affairs are supposed to feel secretive and reckless." She gestured vaguely around the room. "This just feels domestic."

That sentence shifted the atmosphere instantly.

Because she was right.

What existed between them wasn't built on fantasy anymore.

It was built on:

familiarity,

comfort,

daily presence,

emotional reliance.

Which made it infinitely more dangerous long-term.

Then footsteps sounded rapidly outside again.

Haley this time.

The back gate swung open while she walked in mid-sentence, still typing on her phone.

"Okay, if one more executive says synergy, I'm becoming a criminal—"

She stopped when she saw both of them standing in the kitchen.

Then smiled immediately.

"There are my emotionally stable people."

The irony nearly killed Claire internally.

Haley tossed her bag onto the couch and walked straight toward them before kissing Gael quickly and naturally.

Then she looked at Claire.

"Why do you look weird?"

Claire recovered almost instantly.

Years of motherhood had trained her survival instincts well.

"I spent three hours reviewing Alex's essays."

"That explains everything."

Haley moved toward the fridge still talking about work while the atmosphere shifted forcibly back toward normal life.

But Claire noticed something terrifying now:

the contrast between Haley's openness and the hidden emotional reality underneath the room had become almost unbearable to stand inside.
