Chapter 131 131: Honest Enough
For a moment, the noise of the rooftop faded into the background.
The conversations around them,
the clinking glasses,
the city traffic far below—
all of it blurred slightly beneath the weight of Haley's question.
Not because she cornered him.
Because she trusted him enough to ask gently.
Haley watched him quietly across the table.
No suspicion.
No manipulation.
Just concern.
Gael exhaled slowly and leaned back slightly in the chair.
"I've had a lot on my mind lately."
Not a lie.
Haley tilted her head slightly.
"That sounds like the beginning of a politician answer."
Despite everything, that pulled a laugh out of him.
Good.
The tension softened slightly.
Then he looked back toward her more seriously.
"I think things have gotten… complicated emotionally."
The sentence was careful.
Still true.
Haley didn't interrupt.
Old Haley rushed emotionally.
New Haley listened first.
"What kind of complicated?" she asked quietly.
He could lie completely.
Confess everything.
Or stand somewhere dangerous in between.
Gael looked out briefly toward the skyline before answering.
"Everybody's changing right now."
"Your internship." He gestured lightly toward her. "Alex leaving soon. Your family shifting." A small pause. "Sometimes it feels like everything's moving faster than I expected."
Haley absorbed that silently.
Then nodded once.
Because honestly?
She felt it too.
The strange transition between adolescence and adulthood had wrapped itself around the whole family lately.
Then she surprised him again.
"I think you're scared of permanence."
Gael looked back toward her.
Haley smiled faintly.
"You like control." She shrugged lightly. "And lately things are becoming real whether you planned them or not."
That was uncomfortably accurate.
The relationship.
The family integration.
The emotional dependency forming around him.
All of it.
Then Haley reached across the table and rested her hand lightly over his.
"I'm not asking you for forever right now."
The softness in her voice hurt more than pressure would have.
"I just don't want you carrying everything alone in your head."
That sincerity nearly broke him for a second.
Because Haley wasn't demanding certainty.
She was offering partnership.
And suddenly the contrast between her openness and the secrecy growing elsewhere felt almost unbearable.
Haley noticed the shift in his expression immediately.
"You really are overwhelmed."
Gael closed his fingers lightly around hers.
"Something like that."
For a few seconds neither spoke.
Then Haley smiled gently.
"For the record, I still mean what I said."
The words entered the candlelit space between them softly.
No dramatic emphasis needed.
I love you.
And this time, when she looked at him afterward, there wasn't nervousness in her expression anymore.
Only honesty.
The city lights reflected faintly in her eyes while the silence stretched between them again.
Then finally—
quietly,
carefully,
like something that mattered—
Gael answered.
"I know."
The second the words left his mouth, he saw the reaction in her face.
Tiny.
Instant.
Not devastation.
But disappointment.
Because she understood immediately what he didn't say back.
And because she loved him—
she tried to hide the hurt instead of forcing him to fix it.
