Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 85 85: Wine and Lighting

Dinner dissolved slowly into smaller conversations as the evening settled over the backyard.

Phil and Luke became obsessed with hanging string lights correctly.

Alex disappeared inside to finish applications.

Haley stayed animated for almost an hour talking with Gloria about branding accounts, fashion campaigns, and influencer culture.

Gloria encouraging her worked surprisingly well.

Unlike Claire, who approached Haley's future like a problem to solve, Gloria approached it like possibility.

That difference mattered.

Eventually Haley got dragged inside by Alex to "look at actual college programs before your brain leaves again."

Which left the backyard quieter.

Warmer.

The string lights Phil finally installed cast soft gold across the patio while music drifted faintly from the kitchen speaker inside.

Jay sat farther down the yard with a beer, half-listening to Phil explain outdoor speaker acoustics.

Meaning Gloria and Gael ended up briefly alone near the pool.

Not planned.

Just naturally separated from the others.

Gloria leaned lightly against the patio railing with wine in hand, heels abandoned somewhere near the chair beside her.

"You were good for her today," she said.

"For Haley?"

Gloria nodded once.

"She gets insecure when people make her feel less intelligent."

The observation sounded too accurate to be casual.

Gael looked toward her more carefully.

"You noticed that."

"I notice everything." Gloria smiled faintly into her glass. "Especially with women."

The pool lights reflected softly across the water between them while distant laughter drifted from inside the house.

Then Gloria looked toward the open back doors where Haley and Alex were arguing over laptop screens.

"She is beautiful and social, so people assume she is shallow." Gloria shrugged lightly. "After a while, even pretty girls start believing those things."

That sounded personal too.

Not just about Haley.

Gael noticed immediately.

"So did you."

Gloria laughed softly once.

"You really are observant."

"You didn't answer."

She tilted the wine glass slowly between her fingers.

"When I was younger, people liked looking at me more than listening to me." Her smile thinned slightly. "Men especially."

The honesty underneath the sentence shifted the atmosphere subtly.

Because Gloria rarely spoke seriously without wrapping it in charm first.

And now she was.

"You know what's funny?" she continued. "Women like Claire spend years trying to be taken seriously. Women like me spend years trying to prove we already are."

The sentence settled quietly between them.

Not sad.

Just true.

Gael leaned lightly back against the railing beside her.

"You hide it well."

"Of course I do." Gloria looked toward him again. "Beautiful women are expected to smile, not complain."

There it was again.

That small crack underneath the confidence.

Then she smiled suddenly, warmer this time.

"Enough with the honesty. It ruins my reputation."

"That sounds carefully maintained."

"It is carefully maintained."

They both laughed softly after that.

And somehow the conversation shifted again:

easier,

lighter,

closer.

That was Gloria's real danger.

Not seduction.

Fluidity.

The way she could move from playful to vulnerable and back again so naturally it pulled people in before they realized it.

Then Phil yelled triumphantly from across the yard:

"THE LIGHTS ARE SYMMETRICAL."

Jay looked exhausted.

"No one cares."

"I care."

Gloria smiled into her wine before glancing toward Gael again.

"You see?" she murmured. "This is why I drink."
