Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 73 73: Measurements

By late afternoon, the house had somehow turned into a full family operation.

Phil started measuring walls for televisions nobody had approved.

Luke attempted to map "optimal snack routes."

Haley sat cross-legged in the middle of the future living room making furniture lists she absolutely had no authority over.

And Claire—

Claire had quietly become the only functional person in the building.

"Those boxes should stay sealed until move-in day," she informed Phil while taking packing tape away from him.

"I was organizing."

"You were opening random containers."

"That's not a crime."

"It should be."

Gael leaned against the kitchen counter watching the chaos spread through the empty house.

Honestly, the weird part wasn't the noise anymore.

It was how natural everybody looked there already.

Like the family had unconsciously absorbed the space into their routines within a single day.

At one point, Luke disappeared outside to inspect fence dimensions "for gate engineering."

That left the house quieter for the first time all afternoon.

Relatively speaking.

Haley wandered upstairs to look at paint samples while Phil got distracted by garage storage ideas.

Which somehow left Gael alone in the kitchen with Claire.

Again.

She stood at the island reviewing something on her phone before glancing toward the empty living room.

"You're going to need more lighting in here."

"That sounded confident."

"I renovated one house with Phil. I survived psychological trauma."

Claire stepped farther into the kitchen, eyes moving across the empty counters automatically.

"You'll want stools here eventually." She pointed toward the island. "Otherwise people just stand around awkwardly."

"That's specific."

"That's experience."

Gael smiled faintly while she continued mentally arranging the room without realizing she was doing it.

Interesting thing was—

she wasn't treating the house like:

Haley's boyfriend's place.

She was treating it like:

part of the family environment already.

At some point that line had blurred without anyone acknowledging it directly.

Then Claire noticed him watching her.

"What?"

"You've planned this kitchen more than I have."

"That's because you're emotionally detached from countertops."

"Is that even a thing?"

Claire laughed softly before setting her phone down.

For a moment the room settled quieter around them.

Late sunlight filtered through the windows.

Empty walls echoed slightly with distant movement upstairs.

From outside, Luke yelled something about hinges.

Then Claire looked around the room again, slower this time.

"You know what the strange part is?"

Claire shook her head at herself before continuing.

"I expected this to feel intrusive."

The honesty in the sentence shifted the mood slightly.

Gael stayed quiet.

Because she clearly meant more than:

a neighbor buying a house.

Claire leaned lightly against the counter.

"But it doesn't."

Simple words.

Still enough to settle heavily in the empty kitchen.

"You already spent so much time with us anyway," she said more quietly. "I think the house just made everyone realize it."

Then footsteps pounded downstairs suddenly.

Haley appeared carrying paint samples with Alex behind her looking deeply exhausted already.

"What shade of white says 'hot rich people live here'?"

Alex just closed her eyes.

"I hate this family."
