Modern Family: More than Family

Chapter 44 44: Kitchen Energy

Haley walked into the kitchen carrying shopping bags and immediate chaos.

"There's no food in this house," she announced before stopping mid-step.

Her eyes moved between Gael and Gloria sitting at the counter with wine glasses.

"…You started without me."

Gloria looked completely unapologetic.

"You are late."

"That feels subjective."

Gael laughed quietly while Haley dropped her bags beside the island and walked straight toward him.

"You brought my jacket."

"You left your jacket."

"Details."

She kissed him quickly before stealing a sip from his wine immediately afterward.

"Still unfair," she muttered.

Gloria shook her head, smiling into her glass.

The atmosphere shifted the second Haley entered the room.

The quieter tension from before dissolved almost immediately into faster conversation and overlapping teasing.

Haley had that effect naturally.

"So," Gloria asked casually while leaning against the counter, "how much money did you spend today?"

Haley avoided eye contact instantly.

"Emotionally or financially?"

"That answer already worries me."

Gael smirked faintly.

"She bought candles again."

"They smell expensive."

"That is not a measurable quality."

"It is for women," Gloria corrected calmly.

Haley pointed triumphantly.

"See? She gets me."

"I regret being outnumbered."

The conversation drifted easily after that:

shopping,

Luke apparently getting banned from using bleach for "science,"

Phil trying to buy another grill online despite Claire threatening violence.

Normal family insanity.

At one point Haley wandered upstairs to change clothes, still carrying leftover pasta straight from the container.

"No plate?" Gael asked.

"You sound thirty."

"You sound feral."

Gloria laughed softly while Haley disappeared upstairs still arguing.

Then the kitchen became quieter again.

Gloria took another sip of wine before looking toward him.

"She talks about you constantly."

Gael leaned back slightly in the chair.

"That sounds concerning."

"It is mostly adorable."

Mostly.

The word landed carefully.

Gloria smiled faintly at his expression.

"You make her happy." She shrugged lightly. "That matters to all of us more than you think."

Simple sentence.

No teasing underneath it this time.

And somehow that made it feel more personal.

Gael looked down briefly at the wine glass in his hand.

"She makes me happy too."

The answer came easier than expected.

Gloria noticed that immediately.

Her expression softened for half a second before the playful energy returned.

"Oh, you are dangerous."

"That sounded dramatic."

"No." She pointed lightly toward him. "Men your age usually pretend not to care too much. You do the opposite."

Gloria moved closer to the counter beside him to grab something from the cabinet overhead.

Close enough for her perfume to linger briefly.

Warm vanilla.

Soft floral notes underneath.

Comforting scent.

"You know," Gloria said while reaching for another wine glass, "I understand why Claire likes having you around."

That pulled his attention back immediately.

"What does that mean?"

"She relaxes around you."

Gloria grabbed the bottle again before continuing.

"She does not do that often."

Gael stayed quiet for a moment.

Because somehow hearing that from Gloria felt different than hearing it from Haley or Alex.

Then Gloria smiled slightly over her shoulder.

"And before your brain starts overthinking, no, I am not saying anything scandalous."

"That sounds suspiciously specific."

"You have expressive eyes."

Gael laughed softly despite himself.

Upstairs, footsteps sounded again as Haley came back down wearing one of Claire's sweaters and fuzzy socks like she owned the place.

Which, honestly, she probably did.

"There better still be food," she announced while walking back into the kitchen.

Gloria handed her a fork without looking.

"Your boyfriend was defending your honor."

Haley looked immediately pleased.

"Aww."

"I was criticizing your inability to use plates."

"That's still love."
