Chapter 55: Night, Fireflies, and You All
Not long after Levi transformed into a nightingale, he continued transforming midair, becoming a Two-Headed Demon Owl. As one of the strongest among Second-Order magical creatures, its flying speed was much faster, and if he encountered danger, it also had the ability to protect itself.
Unlike a nightingale, which at first glance looked like prey delivered straight to predators higher up the food chain, the Two-Headed Demon Owl, however, was different. Even within the food chain, it occupied a relatively high position.
Combined with its stealth abilities, Levi traveled smoothly without encountering any trouble at all, flying directly toward the Black Forest nearly two thousand kilometers away...
...which was impossible.
Levi didn't know the way.
And after transforming into the Two-Headed Demon Owl state, he also could not use his original body's Detection.
So every so often, he had to revert to human form, use Detection to confirm the direction, then transform back into the Two-Headed Demon Owl and continue traveling.
Finally.
Several hours later.
Levi arrived at the Black Forest mentioned in the intelligence.
After using Detection to confirm that the hunter possessing the Teleportation Cloak was still there, he transformed back into a nightingale and flew toward the hunter's location.
The reason he turned into a nightingale was because the Two-Headed Demon Owl was simply too large. It would be inconvenient inside the Black Forest.
A small nightingale, on the other hand, had no such problem.
Before long, he found the hunter extinguishing a campfire in a clearing within the Black Forest.
That black Teleportation Cloak was draped over the hunter's body, fluttering loudly in the wind.
It looked like he was about to leave.
Levi was shocked. If the hunter left now, there was no telling where he would run off to next. There was no guarantee that intelligence detection would even be able to locate him again. Too many things were outside his control.
So Levi gathered all his strength and charged straight at the hunter.
"Chirp, chirp..." (Don't go.)
"?"
When the hunter saw a shadow rushing toward him, he was startled as well and immediately activated the power of the Teleportation Cloak.
The man and bird brushed past one another.
The fortunate hunter vanished without a trace.
Levi crashed onto the ground, reverting to human form, looking somewhat miserable.
It had been a long time since their Second-Ring Wizard, Sir Levi, had looked this pathetic.
His expression was also rather complicated.
At the very last moment, he had touched the hunter, and the Origin Energy inside his body had reacted as well.
Well, while in a transformed state, his spells could not be used, but Origin Energy was unaffected.
In one-millionth of a second, the Origin Energy entered the hunter's body before returning to his own, and it really had granted him a new ability.
But this ability was not the Teleportation Levi had longed for.
Instead, it was Metal Synthesis.
A new spell crystal formed within his sea of consciousness, but in the very next second, that spell crystal was devoured by his original Synthesis.
The good news was that his Synthesis was finally complete and had already advanced to LV2.
But this was not what Levi wanted.
What Levi wanted was both Teleportation and Metal Synthesis!
Instead, after flying for several hours, this was all he had gained.
Levi would be lying if he said he was not disappointed.
He cast Detection, wanting to see whether he could track down the hunter's location.
The result spoke for itself.
Level 5 Detection could not detect the hunter's destination after teleportation.
Honestly speaking, with the hunter possessing the Teleportation Cloak, and without the ability of the witch's daughter from the fairy tale to utterly captivate him and make him unwilling to leave, touching the man was never going to be easy for Levi.
He could only think of another method.
Levi let out a sigh inwardly.
He truly coveted the ability of Teleportation.
Levi raised his head and looked around. Blue light flickered within his eyes. That was Detection taking effect.
Since he could no longer find that lucky hunter, and since he was already here anyway, Levi decided to see whether this Black Forest contained any treasures.
At the very least, he couldn't return empty-handed.
Animals were out of the question.
What interested Levi now were plants with special effects.
Hm?
What kind of grass was this?
Natural rubber inside the roots?
Although it wasn't a rubber tree, perhaps it still had value. Take it.
Let's give it a name: Rubber Grass.
What's this?
A vine? It has a developed root system and root nodules? High starch content? No need to say more. Take it.
What's this?
Its heavy metal content is extremely high. Might be useful. Take it.
...
Levi looted a whole pile of things throughout the Black Forest. Either they were items that Detection had identified as useful to him, or plants with extremely unusual traits in certain aspects.
He packed up every last one of them, then transformed once more into the Two-Headed Demon Owl, soared into the sky, and carried the bundled goods back in his beak.
The night sky spread across the world below like an enormous sheet of deep-blue velvet, gently blanketing the land beneath it.
Levi spread his wings, powerful currents surging beneath his pitch-black feathers, carrying him as he glided through the boundless night sky.
The wind howled beside his ears like a lover's whisper.
He looked down at the flowing scroll of scenery below.
The forest was no longer as docile as it seemed by day. It had become an ocean of dark green ink in varying shades, its treetops swaying gently in the night wind like waves rising and falling across the sea.
From time to time, a few fireflies carried their tiny lanterns through the woods, like stars left behind in the mortal world, dotting that shadowy green sea with lively points of light.
Moonlight poured down like quicksilver, passing through the thin clouds and falling upon the quiet city, upon the castle spires, upon the roofs of thatched cottages, and upon the campfires of adventurers.
A little girl in pajamas watched the moon from beside a castle window.
A young man in an open space outside his house swung and thrust with a wooden sword again and again.
And an exhausted old mother wove clothing by the dim light of an oil lamp...
All of them entered Levi's field of vision.
Some were troubled by love.
Some struggled for their ideals.
And some simply lived for survival.
Levi flew past in silence, adjusted his posture, and flew toward a farther place like a black meteor.
...
It had taken Levi several hours to fly to the Black Forest, but the return trip was much faster. He arrived in only one or two hours.
He landed not far from the camp, reverted to human form, and used Wizard's Hand to bring that huge pile of things back with him. Then he saw something—
Yalina and the others were sitting around the campfire. An iron pot hung above the flames, and inside it, bread was being boiled in water with ham mixed in, becoming thick and sticky under the high heat.
"This is what you're eating tonight?" Levi asked, his face darkening.
"We thought that since you weren't here, we'd just make something simple," Yalina said, her face reddening slightly.
So because he wasn't here, they didn't know how to cook, right? Levi was truly speechless.
Levi's gaze swept over everyone. Yalina lowered her head, Sky Knight Rune rubbed his hands awkwardly, and the wolf-eared girl, Little Red Riding Hood, looked a little at a loss.
Levi sighed inwardly.
He had flown for several hours and was starving now, so he said nothing more. With a snap of his fingers, all kinds of delicacies appeared out of thin air like pies falling from the sky—
A large platter of chilled oysters adorned with glistening caviar, carrying a cool, refreshing texture and the briny freshness of the sea!
A large plate of Parma ham sliced as thin as cicada wings, wrapped around sweet honeydew melon, its salty and sweet flavors intertwining.
A large number of smoked salmon rolls.
Fresh shrimp salad drizzled with lemon juice and olive oil.
This was the prelude to the feast, and also a display of the power Levi's Synthesis had gained after reaching Level 2.
Next came a full pot of rich, silky, fragrant cream of mushroom soup, with a fine layer of foam floating on the surface, mellow and full-bodied.
There was also a pot of French clear beef stew, transparent to the bottom yet deeply flavorful, with softened diced vegetables and beef pieces floating in the broth.
These two were the soups, and the main courses had not even appeared yet, but they had already made the coachwoman Yalina, Sky Knight Rune, the wolf-eared girl Little Red Riding Hood—whose purpose remained unknown—and the pet nightingale Odelle gape in astonishment.
Levi continued outputting Magic Power, and even more dishes appeared.
Those things from earlier were only appetizers. They were not enough to fill his stomach.
What appeared next were the main courses.
Ten portions of Beef Wellington, crisp on the outside and tender within, with pink meat juices seeping out after being cut open.
Ten portions of pan-fried cod fillets, fried to a golden crisp while the flesh remained fresh and tender.
There were also all kinds of side dishes—emerald-green asparagus, golden carrot chunks cut on the roll, as well as truffle mashed potatoes and creamed spinach.
And it still was not over.
Desserts appeared.
Chocolate lava cakes with a dense texture that melted in the mouth, the hot chocolate sauce flowing out the instant they were cut open, as tempting as molten lava.
Refreshing lemon tarts with a sweet-and-sour flavor.
Delicate macarons, vanilla ice cream paired with crème caramel, layered tiramisu, and so on.
Finally, there were cups of milk tea with different textures... It seemed a little immersion-breaking, but these things came from Levi's memories of his previous life, and he had used Level 2 Synthesis to create them.
Right now, Levi's Synthesis was still low-level, so he could only make these second-rate things. If his level were higher, perhaps he could even synthesize cakes and milk tea that improved meditation efficiency, increased Magic Power recovery speed, and enhanced physical constitution.
For now, he could only make do with these.
Levi felt that these foods were only barely acceptable, but Yalina, Little Red Riding Hood, Sky Knight Rune, Miss Nightingale Odelle were utterly shocked.
Family, who could possibly understand this!
Levi had often made delicious food before, but at the very least, there had still been cooking, frying, roasting, and stewing involved—things they could understand.
But now?
Levi had simply gone out for a while, then returned and snapped his fingers, and all kinds of delicacies—some familiar, but far more unfamiliar—came pouring out just like that.
It was far too outrageous.
It didn't even feel real.
As a result, everyone stood there dumbfounded.
Levi could not care less about that. He was starving right now, so he immediately picked up the food and began eating noisily.
Although these foods had been synthesized by Levi using Synthesis to extract and combine various base substances, making them "synthesized food," fundamentally, they were no different from food made with original ingredients. They could still be absorbed by the human body, and could also be converted by Levi's Conversion into strands of energy that nourished his body.
Levi ate with great satisfaction—one bite of dessert, one oyster, one sip of milk tea, then a huge bite of Beef Wellington.
As for the others, after seeing Levi devour the food like this, Sky Knight Rune was the first to lose his composure.
Out of habit, he rubbed his hands together like a fly and said to Levi, "Lord Levi, may I..."
Levi merely gave him a glance.
Rune instantly understood. Overjoyed, he said, "Thank you, Lord Levi."
As he spoke, he grabbed one of the dishes Levi had made and bit into it. Oil coated his mouth, while rich fragrance, tenderness, crispness, and smoothness exploded across his tongue. His face immediately filled with exaggerated bliss.
"It's too delicious!"
"It's seriously too delicious!" Sky Knight Rune wolfed down the food like a starving ghost. Clearly, he had already eaten quite a lot earlier, yet somehow his stomach could still fit an enormous amount of food.
"What kind of food is this?! I've never eaten anything this delicious in my life!" he exclaimed dramatically while stuffing food into his mouth.
This finally broke the resistance of the coachwoman Yalina and the wolf-eared girl Little Red Riding Hood.
Yalina picked up a serving of tiramisu and placed it into her mouth. The next second, her eyes widened completely, and without saying another word, she immediately grabbed another dessert and began eating again.
Seeing this, Little Red Riding Hood also picked up a dessert. The layered, fragrant sweetness instantly occupied her entire body and mind. It was a flavor she had never even dared imagine before. Compared to these desserts, the cakes her mother baked were as bland as plain water.
After finishing one dessert, she could not resist eating a second.
Then a third.
After that, she drank a cup of milk tea, and her eyes instantly lit up as she started gulping it down eagerly.
When Miss Nightingale Odelle saw all this, even her bird eyes became fixed and staring. Unfortunately, her stomach capacity was too limited, so she could only peck a little here and a little there...
By the time the few humans and one bird had finished all the food, it was already deep into the night.
The night was like thick ink, quietly soaking into the wilderness.
Stuffed with food and drink, utterly satisfied, drowsiness quietly began to overtake everyone.
They sat around the gradually dying campfire when countless faint green and golden lights suddenly appeared around them—
Thousands upon thousands of fireflies.
As though they were forest spirits awakened by the fragrance of the feast and the sound of laughter, they danced gracefully within the silent darkness.
They did not fly chaotically.
Instead, they resembled flowing rivers of light circling around the group.
Yalina extended a fingertip, and a firefly lightly landed upon it, its faint glow reflecting the lingering smile in her eyes.
The wolf-eared girl Little Red Riding Hood raised her head to gaze upward. The countless stars gathered together like a flowing galaxy, dazzling beyond compare, and the faint sorrow lingering in her heart dissipated considerably.
Even the usually unreliable Sky Knight Rune's gaze flickered slightly as he softly hummed an ancient folk song, his voice low, afraid of disturbing these little spirits of the night.
There were no lurking bandits.
No howling wolf packs.
Only this gentle, breathing radiance.
Levi felt a sense of peace unlike anything he had ever experienced before.
He sat quietly beside the campfire's glowing embers, silently watching this scene, listening to the song intertwine with the chirping of insects, as though time itself had frozen in that moment.
An indescribable feeling rose within Levi's heart.
This feeling was nice.
There was night, fireflies, and you all.
For that brief instant, even the loneliness buried deep within Levi's heart no longer felt quite so overwhelming.
