Chapter 39: Sleeping Beauty’s Story
"Please leave, Sir Karens." Yalina said to the peacock-like noble youth with visible annoyance. It was unclear whether her irritation came from Levi's earlier remark about being a coachman, or from Karens pestering her like an annoying fly.
"No, Miss Yalina. You have no idea how valuable you truly are!!!" the noble youth Karens shook his head, speaking to her with a sincere expression. "You should stand on a greater stage, so more people can witness your brilliance!"
Knight-level individuals were not rare.
Beautiful women like Yalina were not particularly rare either.
But a beautiful female knight—such an existence—was exceedingly rare.
She would naturally attract the interest of many nobles.
For example, Karens right now.
After saying that to Yalina, he turned his gaze toward Levi. "Levi, was it?"
"I don't care what kind of relationship you have with Yalina, but it ends here."
"You shouldn't be holding her back. She should—"
Before he could finish, Yalina, now visibly angered, cut him off. She turned to Levi and said, "Levi, I have absolutely no intention of leaving you. I am completely loyal to you."
Levi nodded, entirely unaffected by Karens' words. He casually tossed everything he had just purchased to Yalina—everything except the special plate—and said, "Take these. Bring them back to the inn."
"Got it." Yalina puffed her cheeks and nodded. As expected, in his eyes, she was nothing more than a laborer. What an idiot.
Miss Nightingale Odelle said nothing. She simply flew in front of her, her eyes carrying a teasing smile.
Yalina grew annoyed and let out a snort. "Hmph!"
The amusement in Odelle's eyes deepened.
Meanwhile, after handing over the items, Levi himself began heading toward the Golden Fleece Inn.
Having been interrupted so bluntly by Yalina, the noble youth Karens felt his dignity had been thoroughly trampled. He was furious—but he couldn't vent that anger toward Yalina. Instead, he shifted his target to Levi, intending to teach him a harsh lesson, to show this ignorant country girl what true power looked like.
So Karens said to Levi, "Levi, I challenge you. If you lose, you must stay away from Miss Yalina. Do you dare accept?"
As he spoke, he threw down a white glove in front of Levi.
This gesture immediately attracted a crowd of onlookers—citizens and merchants eager to watch the spectacle.
According to the traditions of the Duchy of Silverbrook, when one person throws down a white glove to challenge another, refusing the duel would brand the other party as a coward.
In fact, this custom existed not only in the Duchy of Silverbrook, but also in the Kingdom of Amtyr, the Kingdom of Francis, and other nations.
They all watched eagerly, waiting for Levi and Karens to fight—
—or more precisely, to duel.
As for Levi, he couldn't care less about such customs. He held them in complete contempt. The only thing on his mind was Stardust.
He said to Karens, "That's enough."
After that, Levi simply turned and prepared to leave.
The crowd was momentarily stunned. This situation was quite rare.
They assumed Levi was afraid, and began mocking him one after another.
Amid those voices, the smile on Karens' face grew wider and wider. With the posture of a victor, he declared to Levi, "Very well. Since you don't dare accept, then according to the agreement, you must leave Miss Yalina."
Levi ignored him and continued walking toward the Golden Fleece Inn. Yalina followed closely behind him, step by step.
No one paid Karens any attention.
That completely ignited his fury.
He strode forward quickly, channeling the strength of a knight as he reached out to grab Levi's arm.
He succeeded in grabbing it.
But in that instant, he realized something terrifying—
Even using all his strength, even drawing upon the power of his life energy seed, he couldn't move Levi in the slightest.
A look of terror instantly crept across his face.
No ordinary knight could achieve this.
The only ones capable of such a thing…
…were those above the knight level—Great Knights.
Karens realized he had provoked a Great Knight.
Knights were not particularly rare—but Great Knights were an entirely different matter.
Such individuals were extremely few in number. In the Duchy of Silverbrook, there were fewer than ten.
These human-shaped war beasts, when equipped with heavy armor and greatswords, were nearly unstoppable—true one-man armies on the battlefield.
Any Great Knight, if willing, could easily obtain land and a noble title from a lord—or even a king.
Even his father—Viscount Sweet—would not dare to offend a Great Knight lightly, let alone one who appeared so young.
And he had actually boasted about challenging such a person?
Karens felt his vision go dark.
However, before he could release his grip or react, Levi's steps were completely unaffected as he continued walking forward. His arm simply swung with a slightly wider motion—
—and the result was that Karens was flung straight into the air, crashing down in front of the crowd.
The entire scene fell silent.
Every spectator who had come to watch the spectacle now wore expressions of shock and disbelief.
"Young Lord Karens!" The attendant who had come with him saw this and his pupils shrank sharply. He knew exactly how strong his young lord was—and precisely because he knew, he felt a deep fear toward Levi's strength.
He hurried past Levi and rushed to Karens' side, helping him up. "Young Lord, we—"
Slap!
Karens wasn't seriously injured. After slapping his attendant, he turned back with the most courteous smile he could muster and said to Levi, "Honorable Lord Levi…"
"Mm. Don't block the way." Levi gave a faint nod.
The disheveled noble youth Karens immediately stepped aside smoothly, clearing the path for Levi.
Yalina followed behind Levi, carrying a faint fragrance as she passed. Yet Karens didn't move at all—nor did he dare to look at her again.
He simply watched as the two of them headed toward the Golden Fleece Inn.
Only after their figures disappeared around the corner did the marketplace seem to come back to life.
People began discussing Levi in hushed voices, praising his strength.
Before Levi had sent Karens flying, people had thought him timid and weak.
After Levi had effortlessly flung him aside, their opinions changed completely. Their evaluation of Karens, meanwhile, turned increasingly unpleasant.
Though the crowd spoke quietly, Karens—having become a knight through the infusion of knight's elixirs—possessed physical abilities far beyond ordinary people, and naturally heard every whisper.
His expression immediately turned unpleasant.
But he did not lash out. Instead, he called his personal attendant and hurried home.
If the Sweet family could take this opportunity to secure the friendship of a Great Knight, the significance would be enormous.
Even for the deeply rooted Sweet family within the Duchy of Silverbrook, they did not have a single Great Knight.
Great Knights were all gathered under the command of several counts and the Grand Duke of Silverbrook.
This Levi appeared to be an unaffiliated Great Knight.
Karens believed that his father—who had only been willing to grant him, as the second son, a small knight's estate—would absolutely be willing to offer a baronial title and the corresponding land in exchange for the loyalty of such a Great Knight.
And if his father was willing, then other viscounts, counts, and even the Grand Duke of Silverbrook would certainly be willing to offer such a price—
—or even more.
Therefore, he had to report this situation to his father as quickly as possible.
Before other forces could react, they needed to bring Levi under their command.
And in that process, Karens himself would benefit greatly.
Perhaps what he would obtain would no longer be just a small knight's estate.
He did not dare to hope for too much.
He did not dare to dream of becoming a baron—
—but a few villages, along with the status of a landed knight, that was already the height of his ambition.
With excitement surging in his heart, Karens hurried toward the family residence in the royal city.
Meanwhile, within the now-lively crowd, several hooded figures watched in the direction Levi had disappeared, their gazes dark and unreadable.
...
Golden Fleece Inn.
Inside Levi's room.
Yalina said to Levi with a face full of apology, "I'm sorry, Levi. I didn't expect something like that to happen and cause you trouble."
Levi did not blame her. He simply said, "It only means you're charming."
There really was nothing to blame Yalina for in this matter.
Levi did not take it to heart.
His attention was focused on the plate he had obtained this time.
As Levi infused his Magic Power into it—
At first, the plate showed no reaction, but it did not reject his Magic Power either.
Only after Levi had infused one-third of his Magic Power did the plate begin to change. The intricate ring of patterns at its center faintly lit up.
Levi continued to channel Magic Power. This time, after another third was infused—
—the plate suddenly burst into brilliant radiance.
The light was dazzling. Yalina and Miss Nightingale Odelle were caught off guard and reflexively shut their eyes.
When the light faded, they opened their eyes—
—and were suddenly shocked to discover that in Levi's hand, there was now a golden plate, engraved with clear and intricate patterns. At a glance, it was obviously no ordinary item.
Levi's expression had also changed slightly.
Yalina felt a trace of concern and quickly asked, "Levi, what's going on?"
"An unexpected situation." Levi fell silent for a moment before speaking.
"What?" Yalina froze briefly, asking in confusion. It wasn't just her—Miss Nightingale Odelle's eyes also showed curiosity.
Levi pondered for a moment, then asked, "Have you heard of the story of Sleeping Beauty?"
"Sleeping Beauty? What is that?" Yalina and Miss Nightingale Odelle both shook their heads.
That was only natural.
After all, that story had taken place many years ago.
And in this era, information traveled slowly. Many people never even left their own villages in their entire lives.
Not knowing the story of Sleeping Beauty was completely normal.
So Levi decided to tell the two of them the story.
He said, "A long, long time ago, there was a powerful kingdom."
"The king and queen had a baby princess."
"Her arrival brought the king great joy."
"The king held a grand banquet for the princess and prepared twelve golden plates, using them to invite twelve witches from across the kingdom to bestow blessings upon her."
"However, there were thirteen witches in total. Because the last witch had a particularly cruel temperament, the king did not invite her."
"But this enraged her. During the banquet, after eleven witches had already bestowed their blessings upon the princess, that cruel witch appeared and cast a vicious curse on her—declaring that at the age of fifteen, she would prick her finger on a spindle and die." Levi slowly recounted the story of Sleeping Beauty.
Hearing this, Yalina gasped. "How could she do that? The princess is innocent."
Miss Nightingale Odelle, on the other hand, felt a wave of sorrow. She herself was someone afflicted by a curse as well. Compared to that princess, she was somewhat more fortunate—she was still alive, though only in the form of a nightingale.
Thinking of this, Miss Nightingale Odelle couldn't help but feel sadness welling up inside her.
"What happened next? What happened after that?" Yalina pressed on. Miss Nightingale Odelle was also curious. "Wasn't there still one witch who hadn't given her blessing?"
Yalina had hit the key point, so Levi continued, "Yes."
"There was still one witch who hadn't given her blessing."
"But the final witch's magic was weaker than that of the cruel witch. She had no way to lift the curse. She could only modify it."
"Modify it into what?" Yalina asked.
"The princess would not die. Instead, she would fall into a hundred-year sleep—until she was awakened by a prince's true love's kiss!"
"And then?" Yalina looked at Levi.
Levi continued the story of Sleeping Beauty. "Even though the king ordered every spinning wheel in the kingdom destroyed, on the day she came of age, the princess still happened to discover an old woman spinning thread in a tower. Out of curiosity, she touched the spindle—and immediately fell into a deep sleep. Everyone in the castle, including the king, the queen, the servants, and even the roast chicken over the fire, fell asleep along with her. The entire castle became surrounded by dense thorny roses."
"That old woman definitely had something wrong with her," Yalina said.
"Perhaps. That happened a long time ago. We no longer know who that old woman really was," Levi said.
"Maybe that old woman was the evil witch!" Yalina speculated.
"That's possible," Levi replied calmly.
"Then what does this have to do with the golden plate in your hand?" Yalina's gaze fell onto the golden plate in Levi's hand. "Could it be that this plate is…?"
"That's right. This golden plate is one of the twelve golden plates from the story of Sleeping Beauty," Levi said.
"Then what does it do?" Yalina's eyes lit up.
"Of course it has a function. The kingdom of Sleeping Beauty is already surrounded by thorny roses—no one can easily enter it. And even finding that thorn-covered royal city is extremely difficult."
"But with this golden plate, it's different. This plate can guide someone to that thorn-covered royal city, and it can also cause the thorny roses guarding it to part and open a path."
"In short, it is a key item for awakening Princess Sleeping Beauty," Levi said.
