Chapter 34: Leaping Across the Misty Swamp
The tavern also provided lodging.
However, it was usually a shared sleeping platform for multiple people, sometimes even in the same room as livestock, so the price was much cheaper.
There were private rooms as well.
But the conditions were honestly quite terrible.
Even the worst hotel Levi had stayed in during his previous life—the kind near a train station—was much better than a tavern's so-called high-end private room.
After Yalina entered and saw the environment, she immediately frowned.
After all, in this era, even noble castles were not exactly comfortable. One really could not expect much from a place like this.
Fortunately, Levi was a wizard, and a Second-Ring Wizard with Gathering Technique.
He could not stand this environment either. The main problem was that the sanitation was simply too awful, even worse than the temporary shelters he built in the wild.
So he did not hesitate to spend some Magic Power.
The Level 4 Gathering Technique covered the entire room, gathering together the dust, feces—yes, there was that kind of thing in the room—food scraps, insects, and all sorts of other filth. In Levi's hand, they condensed into a football-sized lump of black matter, giving off an indescribable stench.
Levi could not help shaking his head. He threw the thing out the window and into the gutter outside.
At once, the entire room became extremely clean. Even the air turned fresh.
Yalina took several deep, satisfied breaths, her face full of bliss.
This was what a place fit for people to live in should be like!
It had to be said that ever since she began wandering with Levi, a wizard, she had become more and more "luxurious" when it came to hygiene and living conditions.
If she ever lost this standard of living and had to go from luxury back to hardship, who knew whether she would be able to endure it.
But clearly, Yalina had no such worries right now.
She sat down at the edge of the bed. There was only one bed in the entire room, covered with rushes.
Levi glanced at her calmly. "What are you thinking? Sleep on the floor."
Yalina's lips immediately pouted. She rolled her eyes at Levi. "Don't be so nervous, Mr. Levi. I won't hurt you."
Yalina deliberately drew out the word "Mister."
Levi shook his head inwardly. He really was too kind. So kind that she was not afraid of him at all.
He was a notorious warlock, after all.
At this moment, Yalina's expression turned a little more serious. She asked Levi, "Levi, what exactly was that man asking you for earlier?"
"He asked me to find the third prince of the Kingdom of Amtyr. The prince who can grant someone a noble title and a fief," Levi said casually.
"How did he end up asking you? Did he realize you're a wizard?" Yalina asked in confusion.
"Not quite." Levi shook his head. The other party had purely taken notice of his strength as a great knight. Seeing that their appetites were far beyond ordinary people's, he guessed their level of power and decided to make a request just in case it worked. "He only saw how much we could eat and guessed our strength from that. That's why he approached us."
"Oh, so that's how it is!" Yalina's eyes shifted, and she asked curiously, "Then Levi, do you know where that third prince is?"
"I… don't know," Levi said.
He did know that this "Frog Prince" had been cursed into a frog and was currently inside a deep well in some country, but he was not clear on the specific location.
"I see!" Deep regret appeared on Yalina's face. "I thought you knew everything. Otherwise, you might really have obtained a fief and become a noble lord!"
Levi did not care about so-called nobility or fiefs.
He fell silent for a moment, then said to Yalina, "Go to sleep."
After saying that, Levi ignored Yalina and Miss Nightingale Odelle, and began practicing his spells alone.
After all, the sooner he raised the levels of his spells, the stronger he would become.
Levi had not forgotten that his intelligence from Detection had shown that the Magic Mirror Queen had sent a powerful witch to deal with him.
So the stronger he became, the safer he would be.
With that in mind, Levi immediately cast Detection and carried out an intelligence scan:
[Intelligence One: The witch of the magic herb garden has agreed to help the seven dwarfs of Whispering Forest make a potion to heal scars. This is a very simple matter for her, but she claims that it will take time.]
[Intelligence Two: In order to determine your location, the Magic Mirror Queen has repeatedly changed her questions to the Magic Mirror into inquiries about where you are, then provided the information to the witch with powerful curse abilities through owls or other means. Because of this matter, the Magic Mirror Queen is very angry with you.]
[Intelligence Three: Henry Bass is the guardian knight of the Frog Prince's mother. Having no descendants of his own, he treats Prince Romdis as his own son.]
[Intelligence Four: The Frog Prince was cursed by a witch and turned into a frog because of a woman.]
[Intelligence Five: The Frog Prince was abandoned by the witch inside a deep well in the forest beside the royal palace of the Duchy of Silverbrook. Only by completing a specific ritual can the curse on him be lifted.]
Levi's attention fell on the fifth piece of intelligence.
It contained the whereabouts of that unlucky Frog Prince.
Originally, Levi had regarded the Frog Prince fairy-tale instance as optional. After all, this fairy tale did not have any real treasures.
To Levi, that meant there was not much to gain from it.
But after learning this intelligence about the Frog Prince, a different thought arose in his mind.
In any case, the Duchy of Silverbrook lay along his route.
Once they crossed the Misty Swamp, they would enter the territory of the Duchy of Silverbrook.
However, the Misty Swamp was shrouded in foul-smelling mist all year round. Not only were its conditions harsh and its dangers everywhere, but a vast number of kobolds also lived deep within the swamp. It was a dangerous place.
Hadn't many adventurers entered the Misty Swamp in search of the Frog Prince, only to never return?
They were either swallowed by the swamp or became food for the kobolds.
Ordinary people simply did not dare cross the Misty Swamp to enter the Duchy of Silverbrook. They would rather take a detour more than three times as long to reach the duchy.
For both the Kingdom of Amtyr and the Duchy of Silverbrook, it was a natural barrier that was extremely difficult to cross.
However, for Levi, a Second-Ring Wizard, it was not a problem.
He pondered for a moment, then made a decision—to head to the Duchy of Silverbrook the next day.
But before that, he began practicing his spells.
Wizard's Hand!
Gathering Technique!
He practiced over and over again. Only after his Magic Power had been consumed by half did he stop, switching to training his meditation method to restore his Magic Power and increase his Spiritual Power.
In the blink of an eye, it was already the next day.
To everyone's astonishment, Levi once again ate and drank his fill, using Conversion to turn it into a warm current that nourished his body. Only then did he leisurely leave with Yalina and Miss Nightingale Odelle.
As for that "loyal Henry," he had already left the night before.
He would continue wandering aimlessly until he found the Frog Prince.
Asking Levi for help had merely been a desperate attempt—grasping at straws.
People like Levi… he had asked many of them for help before.
After Levi left, the tavern owner, Aunt Marta, went to the room he had stayed in the previous night to clean it up.
But when she opened the door, the familiar stench did not greet her. The entire room looked completely renewed—no dust, no trash, no food scraps, no bedbugs, and no rats.
Her mouth fell open in shock. "How did he do that?"
The "he" Aunt Marta referred to was, of course, Levi. At this moment, he had already left the border town, riding in a carriage along a desolate road in the wilderness.
However, he suddenly told Yalina to stop.
Yalina was puzzled. "What's wrong?"
"We're going to cross the Misty Swamp and head to the Duchy of Silverbrook, but traveling by carriage is too slow," Levi said.
"So, you're planning to abandon the carriage and walk instead?" Yalina asked.
That was not a joke.
With Levi and Yalina's current physical condition, walking would be much faster than traveling by carriage.
By carriage, it might take two weeks or more to get out of the marsh.
But on foot, as long as they did not lose their way or encounter any unexpected accidents, they could cross the entire Misty Swamp in just a few days.
After all, the physical capabilities of knights and great knights were no joke.
However, if they traveled on foot, they would not be able to carry as many supplies.
And when resting at night, having no shelter from wind and rain would be troublesome.
Of course, it would only be a minor inconvenience. With Gathering Technique, Wizard's Hand, and Detection, even without the alchemy carriage, Levi could remain calm and composed, handling things with ease—even in the unfamiliar and dangerous Misty Swamp.
Yalina was well aware of this.
But Levi shook his head and said, "No. We're bringing the carriage too."
"We're just not riding in it."
"What do you mean?" Not only Yalina, but even Miss Nightingale Odelle was confused.
Levi did not keep them in suspense. He directly activated his Level 4 Polymorph: Greater Demon Owl, transforming into a terrifying giant demonic bird. The aura of a high-tier magical creature spread out without restraint, immediately overwhelming both Yalina and Miss Nightingale Odelle.
Especially Miss Nightingale Odelle—she was affected the most, her eyes nearly rolling back as she almost fainted.
Seeing this, Levi, in his Greater Demon Owl form, quickly restrained his aura, and both the girl and the bird gradually recovered.
"Levi… what exactly are you? A monster? Or, like the Church says… a demon from hell?" Yalina asked, still shaken, her gaze complicated as she looked at Levi's transformed Greater Demon Owl form.
"I'm just a small wizard who knows a few spells and wants to travel the world," Levi replied.
The Greater Demon Owl he had transformed into retained the ability to speak human language.
Although its voice sounded somewhat shrill.
"Alright, get on my back. I'll carry you across the Misty Swamp to the Duchy of Silverbrook," Levi urged.
"Fly?" Yalina's attention was instantly drawn to that word. Her eyes lit up—she had never seen the scenery from the sky before!
"Can I really?" she asked hesitantly.
"Stop wasting time. Get on." Levi used his claws to lightly lift Yalina and place her near his neck. As for Miss Nightingale Odelle, she did not need to be told—she flew over on her own and perched beside Yalina.
Then Levi hooked the alchemy carriage with one claw, grabbed the horses with another, spread his wings, and soared into the sky.
"Ahhhh—!" It was Yalina's first time flying, and she could not help screaming.
Until Miss Nightingale Odelle could not take it anymore. "Alright, your voice is about to make me deaf."
Only then did Yalina stop screaming. She said awkwardly, "I'm just… not used to it."
She claimed she was not used to it, but in reality, her entire body was tense. She clung tightly to Levi's transformed form.
Miss Nightingale Odelle glanced at her but said nothing.
After all, people needed time to adapt—going from land to the sky all at once!
After quite a while, Yalina finally dared to look down.
From high above, the Misty Swamp stretched beneath them.
This vast marsh looked like a huge, chaotic scar upon the earth.
Thick gray-white mist rolled and twisted through the lowlands like a living thing, completely obscuring everything below. Only occasionally, when torn apart by air currents, would it briefly reveal patches of dark green, moss-covered, decaying tree stumps—only to swallow them again moments later.
Countless winding, murky waterways appeared and disappeared within the fog, like silver-gray dead serpents lying silently across the black mud.
At times, through the thinning mist, one could glimpse a few dead, twisted trees stretching their bare branches toward the sky like ghostly hands, adding an even more eerie atmosphere.
Under the shroud of mist, this land lay silent and lifeless.
And yet beneath that silence, it felt as though countless malicious eyes were hidden within the fog… watching you.
