Fairy Tale Survival with Ability Copying

Chapter 29: Gretel Slays Her Master, Attribute Status

The remaining materials had to be found in the forest.

Levi didn't need anyone's help. He simply took a stroll through the forest and quickly found everything he needed.

Then, borrowing the three-legged silver cauldron—an indispensable tool for brewing potions—from the old witch Margaret, he began preparing the potion.

Under the blazing flames, the cauldron warmed slightly, emitting a faint glow—magic power at work.

Levi first gently placed the Moonshadow Crab shell at the bottom of the pot.

The shell had already shattered into seven pieces. Each fragment shimmered with an indigo glow, and the moment it touched the surface, frost began to form.

The instant the shell entered the cauldron, mist appeared out of nowhere, swirling above the pot's opening and forming a tiny, sweet-scented spirit-realm vortex.

A blue light flickered in Levi's eyes—Detection was active. He didn't dare delay. Seizing the precise timing, he added the ingredients one by one with perfect accuracy:

Three stalks of Silent Moss!

This magical plant was entirely silver-gray and made no sound when touched. It had no roots, growing only on century-old sugar crystals, absorbing stray thoughts like a sponge absorbs water.

Two Star-Tear Ambers!

These were crystallized emotional residues shed when the Moonshadow Giant Crab molted, containing liquid starlight within. When cracked open, they produced a sound like wind chimes. Once the fragments entered the pot, they dissolved into silver threads, wrapping around the crab shell.

Then a handful of Clarity Wheat!

A drop of Unspoken Tear!

And of course, Butter Fingers were indispensable.

Along with some more ordinary materials—Redheart Stone, Silver Frog Venom, and the blood of seven different animals…

All of it was combined into a single brew.

After three hours of simmering, the cauldron boiled—but no steam rose.

The potion inside was a translucent silvery white, like melted moonlight wrapped in sugar frost. Golden runes floated across its surface.

Its aroma was equally unique: at first, the freshness of a forest after rain; then the warmth of freshly baked bread; and finally, a faint tingling sensation, like snow melting on the tongue.

With a glance using Detection, Levi immediately knew—he had succeeded.

Strictly speaking, this method didn't count as conventional potion brewing.

But its effects surpassed many standard potions.

Using Wizard's Hand, Levi scooped up a bowl's worth in an instant and drank it.

The liquid wasn't hot at all—instead, it was cool and soothing, like moonlight bathing the body… like a blind man seeing light for the first time.

In short—

Levi had an awakening.

Without hesitation, he sat down and began meditating again.

A Sweet Corridor, longer than his first meditation, unfolded before him. The walls were filled with scenes of memories—many from his current life, and as it stretched further, more and more from his past life.

This meditation lasted until the next day.

[You have completed a meditation. Spiritual Power +2. Current Spiritual Power: 22.2]

Seeing this result, Levi was overjoyed.

This single session of meditation had yielded more than an entire week before.

Glancing back at the three-legged silver cauldron, he saw that the potion inside could still be used multiple times. A smile crept onto his face.

But when he noticed Yalina nearby, idly counting flies out of boredom, he suddenly found her rather annoying—and his smile faded.

He used Wizard's Hand once, swatting all the flies dead.

[You have cast Wizard's Hand once. Experience +1…]

[You have used Gathering Technique once. Experience +1…]

[You have used Conversion once. Experience +1…]

Time passed in a flash—more than two weeks went by.

At this point, Levi consumed the final portion of the potion. After finishing his meditation, he opened his eyes, full of vigor, a trace of unconcealed satisfaction in his gaze.

His current attributes were as follows:

[Name: Levi]

[Identity: Transmigrator, Fugitive, Second-Ring Wizard, Great Knight]

[Strength: 5.65]

[Constitution: 5.33]

[Agility: 5.78]

[Spiritual Power: 30.01]

[Charisma: 1.8]

[Magic Power: 10003/10003]

[Abilities: Origin Energy (Non-upgradable), Detection Lv.5 (1/1600), Conversion Lv.3 (10/400), Gathering Technique Lv.4 (20/800), Moon Wolf Knight Breathing Technique Lv.4 (50/800), Wizard's Hand Lv.4 (750/800), Polymorph: Night Demon Owl Lv.3 (100/400), Sweet Corridor Lv.1 (15/100)]

[Note: You have become a Second-Ring Wizard, but danger still remains.]

This was Levi's harvest.

His physical attributes hadn't changed much, but his Spiritual Power had reached 30.01—surpassing the limit of a First-Ring Wizard and stepping into the level of a Second-Ring Wizard.

Next came the various innate spell abilities he had mastered.

First, Detection had risen from Level 4 to Level 5, reaching the level of a Second-Ring Wizard. From now on, it could probe deeper layers of information.

Next was Conversion, which had also reached Level 3. It was only one level away from becoming a First-Ring Spell. In the future, it would be even more effective when he used it on food.

Then there was Gathering Technique. This frequently used spell, though only a support-type ability, had also reached the level of a First-Ring Wizard. It could now gather not only from inanimate objects, but also from living beings—though only from surface-level aspects.

However, when Levi used Gathering Technique on living targets, even if he couldn't extract anything from them, he could still cause their bodies to momentarily stall. The stronger the target, the weaker the effect.

But to Levi, this was still extremely meaningful. In other words, Gathering Technique had now gained combat utility.

Next was Wizard's Hand. This was another spell Levi used frequently. Although it hadn't yet reached the Second-Ring level, it wouldn't be long—its experience was nearly maxed out.

When that time came, Levi would be a wizard with two Second-Ring spells.

Many Second-Ring Wizards only had a single spell at that level.

Finally, there was Polymorph: Night Demon Owl.

Because he had been inside the Candy House, Levi hadn't been able to transform freely, so this spell hadn't improved much.

Otherwise, if it reached Level 4—equivalent to a First-Ring Spell—it would become even more powerful.

At Level 3, the transformed Night Demon Owl was already capable of easily slaughtering a twenty-man armed squad that included both Great Knights and Knights. If it reached Level 4… just how strong would it become?

Levi glanced at the exact data. This spell was only three hundred experience points away from leveling up. Once he left the Candy House and resumed traveling, he was confident it wouldn't take long to max it out.

He had that confidence—this was the confidence brought by being a Second-Ring Wizard, with ten thousand points of Magic Power.

A thought suddenly stirred in Levi's mind. He casually cast a Detection on both Yalina and the nightingale, Miss Odelle:

[Name: Yalina]

[Identity: Miller's Daughter, Knight, Female Lead of the fairy tale instance "The Robber Bridegroom"]

[Strength: 3.26]

[Constitution: 3.18]

[Agility: 3.88]

[Spiritual Power: 1.54]

[Charisma: 1.7]

[Abilities: Moon Wolf Knight Breathing Technique, Carriage Driving]

[Name: Odelle Cruz]

[Identity: Cursed Nightingale, Daughter of Viscount Cruz of the Duchy of Champs-Élysées, Supporting Character in the fairy tale instance "The Robber Bridegroom," Supporting Character in the fairy tale instance "Jorinda and Joringel"]

[Strength: 0.03]

[Constitution: 0.02]

[Agility: 1.22]

[Spiritual Power: 1.09]

[Charisma: ?]

[Abilities: Low-Light Vision, Flight]

[Note: A noble young lady cursed into a nightingale, used by a certain witch to maintain contact with followers of an evil god. The witch possesses more than seven hundred such nightingales. Behind this, there seems to be an enormous conspiracy.]

[You have used Detection once. Experience +1. Current EXP: 2/1600.]

[You have used Detection once. Experience +1. Current EXP: 3/1600.]

It had to be said—Level 5 Detection, a Second-Ring-level spell, consumed a tremendous amount of Magic Power.

Even with Levi's current reserves, he couldn't use it frequently.

However, the information obtained by Level 5 Detection was far more extensive and in-depth than that of Level 4.

Especially the ability to identify which fairy tale instance a person belonged to—this was incredibly valuable to Levi.

At that moment, his attention was drawn to one particular line in the information:

[There seems to be an enormous conspiracy behind this.]

What conspiracy?

Levi carefully recalled the original fairy tale, but found nothing.

Except for one rather peculiar detail.

His eyes flickered slightly. Unfortunately, Second-Ring-level Detection could only reveal this much information. If he wanted to learn more, he would likely have to raise Detection to an even higher level.

He couldn't help but wonder—

If Detection were raised to Level 8 or Level 9, would it truly become omniscient?

That is—

All-knowing?

And if one held the authority of omniscience… could it lead to omnipotence?

Omniscience and omnipotence?

Just thinking about it was thrilling.

This wondrous fairy tale world!

The corners of Levi's lips curled upward like a hook.

At that moment, Levi saw Gretel approaching with a stern expression, carrying food in her hands.

With a thought, he cast a Level 5 Detection on her:

[Name: Gretel]

[Identity: Woodcutter's Daughter, Second-Tier Wizard Apprentice, Female Lead of the fairy tale instance "Hansel and Gretel"]

[Strength: 1.21]

[Constitution: 1.01]

[Agility: 1.34]

[Spiritual Power: 8.98]

[Charisma: 1.2]

[Abilities: Sweet Corridor Meditation Method, Magical Pastry Making]

[Note: She secretly added something to the food. It isn't lethal, but under certain conditions, it can cause people to lose their judgment, leaving them dizzy and disoriented. She is preparing to escape, but before that, she intends to deal with some troubles first. However, against someone like you who possesses "Conversion," it has no effect.]

...

Seeing this information, Levi's eyes narrowed slightly as he glanced at Gretel.

A trace of panic flickered deep within Gretel's eyes, and Levi caught it.

But Levi said nothing.

Faced with someone as mysterious as Levi—a wizard—Gretel still felt extremely uneasy.

She placed the tray down and, for once, spoke, "Please enjoy your meal."

Levi pretended to know nothing. Right in front of Gretel, he drank the cup of milk that had been tampered with. Before Yalina and Odelle had begun eating, he said to Gretel, "Alright, you can leave now. We're about to eat."

"Understood." Seeing Levi drink the milk, Gretel let out a quiet breath of relief. She nodded, her expression returning to that arrogant composure, and walked out.

Not long after—

The irritable voice of the old witch Margaret came from outside, "Gretel, you useless girl! If you still can't learn this, I'll roast your brother tomorrow and eat him!"

"Come here now. I'll teach you how to make magical bread. This is something that can keep a person from feeling hungry for a long time. You must remember, its—"

Levi remained expressionless. He quickly finished his own portion of food, then ate Yalina's and the nightingale Odelle's portions as well.

Yalina looked aggrieved. "Levi, we haven't eaten yet!"

"This food is poisoned. Don't eat it," Levi said.

"Poisoned? The old witch did it?" Yalina's face changed in shock.

"Not her. She has no reason to. Besides, Margaret has also been poisoned," Levi shook his head.

"Levi, you mean… that person… what is she trying to do? The old witch feeds her, teaches her magic, and she…" Yalina couldn't understand. During her time here, she had already realized that the old witch Margaret was raising Gretel as her disciple.

"Maybe what you're giving her isn't what she wants," Levi shrugged.

Hearing this, Yalina thought of her own experience. Her father had chosen a promising young man—the "Robber Bridegroom"—for her. From her father's perspective, it was a good match, but it wasn't what she truly wanted.

She found herself understanding Gretel a little.

At that moment—

Yalina suddenly remembered that Levi had said the food was poisoned, yet he had eaten all of it. Concern immediately showed on her face as she looked at him. "Levi, are you alright?"

"Don't worry. I'm a bit special. This kind of thing doesn't affect me," Levi replied calmly.

"Oh…" Yalina glanced at him.

"I'm going out for a moment."

A blue light flickered in Levi's eyes. As he spoke, he walked out of the room.

Leaving behind Yalina and Miss Odelle, the nightingale, staring at each other in silence.

...

"When making this kind of magical bread, the fire is extremely important. You must carefully watch the intensity of the flames."

In front of the bread oven inside the Candy House, the old witch Margaret, her eyes bloodshot, instructed Gretel, whose gaze flickered uneasily.

Blazing flames surged from within the oven.

Gretel suddenly said, "I don't know how to judge whether the fire is ready."

"What a foolish girl!" The old witch Margaret was furious, but she still stepped forward, leaned into the oven, and reached inside to feel the temperature, preparing to explain it to Gretel.

At that moment, Gretel suddenly took something out of her pocket. A strange fragrance spread through the air.

The fragrance itself was not poisonous.

But earlier that day, Gretel had added something to Margaret's breakfast. That substance was also non-lethal—but when combined with this fragrance, it triggered a mysterious reaction.

The old witch Margaret instantly lost her strength.

This was precisely a lesson she herself had taught Gretel.

For a moment, she didn't know whether to feel gratified… or heartbroken.

A cold glint flashed across Gretel's face. Without hesitation, she grabbed the old witch Margaret, shoved her into the blazing hot oven, and slammed the door shut.

Margaret's limbs went weak—she couldn't even cast any spells.

The searing pain forced her to scream, her voice shrill and terrifying.

Gretel staggered back a few steps. There was clear fear lingering in her eyes—and relief.
