Chapter 26: A Deal with the Old Witch
Levi used Detection on the red-eyed old woman and confirmed that she was the witch from the fairy tale Candy House.
The legendary old witch who eats children.
He also used Detection on the child beside her and learned her identity—Gretel!
She also had a brother named Hansel!
Just like her, they were both currently living inside this Candy House.
In the fairy tale, the witch of the Candy House would fatten Hansel up before eating him.
Meanwhile, Gretel was enslaved by her, forced to cook, fetch water, and do various chores.
But the information Levi obtained through Detection didn't quite match the fairy tale.
Because under Levi's gaze, this hate-filled Gretel was clearly a wizard apprentice!
'A beginner who hasn't been studying long, but whose spell training has progressed rapidly—a First-Tier Wizard Apprentice.'
That was the information Levi saw through Detection.
If the witch of the Candy House intended to eat Hansel, then there would be no reason for her to teach Gretel magic.
But this also explained something that had puzzled Levi in his previous life.
If Gretel had been taught magic, then when they later escaped, her summoning of the white duck from the river made perfect sense.
Because Gretel was no longer an ordinary farmer's daughter—she was a witch!
Levi began to feel that the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel he had read in his previous life wasn't quite right.
He fell silent for a moment, then spoke to the old witch, "So, would you obey her orders and kill me?"
The old witch's red eyes fixed on Levi as she said, "Young warlock, although I cannot see, I can smell. I can tell—you are calm, completely unshaken."
"You seem to already understand everything."
Levi remained silent.
The old witch continued expressionlessly, "If it had been a year ago, upon receiving that order, I would have killed you without hesitation. That is not an existence I could afford to offend."
"Even earlier today, before meeting you, I would have done the same."
"And after meeting me?" Levi asked calmly.
Meanwhile, Yalina and the nightingale Miss Odelle appeared extremely tense.
"That existence did not tell me that you are not only a knight, but also a wizard."
"A warlock who makes me feel threatened," the old witch said.
"So…" Levi slightly raised his gaze.
"So, young and interesting warlock Levi—tell me, what is your purpose in coming here?" the old witch asked directly.
Before Levi's eyes, information only he could see appeared—
[An error while practicing candy-based magic has caused severe 'sugarization' backlash in her body. Her life has already entered its final countdown.]
This was a First-Ring Wizard on the verge of death, in a weakened state.
No wonder she spoke the way she did.
Levi thought for a moment, then stated his purpose: "I came here to purchase a high-level meditation method from you—one suitable for a First-Ring Wizard."
"I am willing to pay a price, if I have something you want," Levi said, not entirely confident.
The old witch paused for a moment, her expression turning playful.
"That's your purpose?"
Levi nodded.
"If it's that, it's not impossible."
"But you must agree to do one thing for me," the old witch said.
"What is it?" Levi frowned slightly.
The old witch did not answer. Instead, she turned to the girl beside her and snarled viciously, "Why aren't you training yet?!"
"If your progress doesn't meet my standards, I'll eat your brother!"
Gretel shot the old witch a hateful look, then glared at Levi as well. With a dark expression, she turned and hurried into one of the rooms inside the Candy House.
Only then did the old witch smile again and say to Levi, "Let me introduce myself first. Margaret—that is my name. Young warlock, you may address me as Madam Margaret."
Levi… couldn't bring himself to say it.
Margaret's expression stiffened slightly before she muttered, "What a rude young warlock."
Her voice wasn't loud, but it was enough for Levi to hear.
Levi pretended not to notice.
At this moment, the old witch Margaret spoke again, "As you can see, I am the master of the Candy House."
"The Candy House was established long ago by a Third-Ring Wizard known as the White Sand Saint Artisan. It once enjoyed great glory… ah, but now, there are very, very few wizards willing to practice candy-based magic anymore."
Levi simply listened in silence.
The old witch Margaret sighed a few times. Seeing that Levi did not respond, she muttered in dissatisfaction, then turned and walked toward another room of the Candy House.
"Come with me, young warlock. Wizards these days are truly lacking in manners."
Levi followed behind her, treating Margaret's complaints as if he hadn't heard them.
After hesitating for a moment, Yalina brought along Miss Odelle, the nightingale, and followed Levi into the Candy House as well.
From the outside, it looked like nothing more than a house of moderate size, made entirely of candy.
But once inside, everyone realized that it contained a whole different world.
The old witch Margaret led Levi and the others through a heavy archway carved from dark chocolate. A scent blending aged parchment with sweet herbal notes rushed toward them.
Stepping through the entrance, what greeted them was a grand hall.
The structure supporting the dome was not made of stone pillars, but of massive mint candy columns etched with spiral patterns. At their tops, they branched outward into tree-like structures, resembling an inverted forest.
Hanging from these "branches" were glowing lollipop fruits, radiating a soft and steady light that illuminated the entire space.
At the center of the hall stood a colossal caramel sculpture known as the "Tree of Wisdom."
Its trunk was formed from layered amber-colored sugar, tough yet translucent. Within it, one could faintly see golden syrup flowing, like an inexhaustible source of magic.
Yalina, the coachwoman, and Miss Odelle, the nightingale, were both stunned by the sight.
Even Levi's eyes showed a glimmer of amazement.
Using Detection, he saw that this "giant candy tree" was rooted atop a small magic crystal vein, with streams of magical energy flowing around it.
This was not something a First-Ring Wizard could possibly accomplish.
He recalled what Margaret had said—that this was a school of magic founded by a Third-Ring Wizard, the White Sand Saint Artisan—and only then did it make sense.
Levi's gaze lingered on the "giant candy tree." Its branches extended to the ceiling, bearing all kinds of "magical fruits"—silver-foil-wrapped chocolate spheres, crystal-clear hard candies, and mysterious glowing gummies.
Surrounding the tree, the floor was paved with a vast star-map carpet made from countless colorful gummies.
The carpet depicted complex magic circles and ancient constellations, suggesting it served some deeper purpose.
From the hall extended four winding corridors, each leading to a different area.
The leftmost corridor had walls built from deep red strawberry gummies, emitting a warm heat.
Next was a corridor where both the walls and floor were covered in semi-transparent blue jelly. Walking on it gave a slight bounce, as if stepping on the surface of water.
Then came a corridor resembling an underground cave. From the ceiling hung rock-sugar formations like stalactites, while the ground was covered in a dense "mushroom forest." These mushrooms, made of chocolate and marshmallow, had enormous caps, and the air was filled with a rich scent of earth mixed with cocoa.
The rightmost corridor had walls almost entirely made of transparent sugar-glass.
This was the path Margaret led them through.
At the end, they arrived in a domed room made entirely of transparent material, allowing a full view of the forest below.
Inside, there were no fixed tables or chairs—only fluffy, marshmallow-like clouds floating in midair.
Margaret gestured for Levi and the others to sit on them.
She looked at Levi with a strange expression.
"Young warlock."
"My name is Levi," he said, frowning slightly.
"Very well, young Levi," Margaret replied.
In truth, due to her "sugarization" condition, her vision was blurred—she could only make out vague silhouettes.
Being stared at like this made Levi somewhat uncomfortable.
He spoke directly, "What condition do you want me to agree to?"
Margaret did not answer immediately. Instead, she glanced around and asked him a question, "What do you think of this Candy House?"
"It's beautiful," Levi replied sincerely.
"Yes—beautiful, delicious, and beneath it all, filled with deadly danger," Margaret said. "Even though I can no longer see it clearly."
"It was created by the White Sand Saint Artisan, and it has existed in this world for a thousand years."
"Then now, it has encountered a problem." A faint trace of sorrow appeared on the old witch Margaret's face.
Levi pointed it out directly, "Because you're about to die—and because you have no successor. Am I right?"
Hearing this, Margaret's expression instantly hardened. The atmosphere turned oppressive, and even the marshmallow clouds beneath them bared their fangs.
Yalina and Miss Odelle, the nightingale, were startled, their expressions tense.
But Levi remained calm, because through Detection, he could tell that she was merely bluffing.
Seeing that Levi remained unmoved, the old witch Margaret suddenly bared her teeth in a terrifying grin.
"No wonder she wants you dead!"
"You're so clever—you must have already seen her secret, haven't you?"
Margaret assumed that Levi had "seen" all of this himself.
Levi simply smiled without speaking, offering no explanation.
The atmosphere soon relaxed again.
Margaret stopped holding back and said, "I have a meditation method—a high-level one that can be trained up to the level of a Second-Ring Wizard."
Levi frowned slightly.
"Didn't you say the Candy House was founded by a Third-Ring Wizard, the White Sand Saint Artisan? Then the meditation method passed down here should, in theory, allow one to reach the Third-Ring level."
Margaret looked at Levi with her red eyes—if she could see at all.
She let out a strange laugh.
"Hehehe… In theory, yes. But in reality, the reason the White Sand Saint Artisan reached the Third-Ring level was something else entirely."
"What reason?" Levi asked curiously.
"There's no harm in telling you. It was because of her special White Sand bloodline—a high-grade bloodline capable of enhancing a wizard's level. The founder relied on this unique bloodline to make a final leap and break through into the Third-Ring realm."
"However, she was never able to advance further in her lifetime. And after her death, her body transformed into amber caramel, remaining within the White Sand Altar."
"If one goes to the White Sand Altar, defeats the guardian beast, and absorbs the remains of the White Sand Saint Artisan, they can obtain her White Sand bloodline and raise their wizard level. But in return, the absorber will ultimately be bound by that bloodline as well—after death, they too will become nourishment, transforming into new amber caramel," Margaret explained, revealing the secrets of the Candy House.
Levi fell silent for a moment before asking, "Then what do you want me to do?"
"I can give you this meditation method. In exchange, you must agree to one thing—you must swear an oath and become the 'Sweet Guardian' of the Candy House."
"One day, when you reach the level of a Second-Ring Wizard, I want you to return and help the successor of the Candy House defeat the guardian beast of the White Sand Altar, so that she may absorb and fuse with the White Sand Saint Artisan's bloodline."
"I have no future left… but you still have hope," Margaret said softly.
"The successor you mentioned—is that girl?" Levi asked after a pause.
"That's right. Alia brought me a girl with wizard potential. Unfortunately, her aptitude is too poor, and she's unwilling to meditate."
"I fed her Moonshadow Crab Shells that can enhance Spiritual Power, and I used her brother's life to force her—but she's still only a First-Tier Wizard Apprentice."
"In this lifetime, who knows if she'll ever even reach the level of a First-Ring Wizard—let alone the Second-Ring realm."
Hearing this, Levi's eyes flickered slightly.
"She doesn't seem grateful to you."
"One day, she might even kill you."
"Heh heh heh…" Margaret didn't care at all.
"I'm waiting for that day!"
"When she bakes me into bread and eats me!"
"Young warlock Levi, you don't know this, do you? When you practice the Candy House meditation method, you draw power from deliciousness—but you yourself will also become delicious in the eyes of others. Whoever eats you will gain a portion of your power."
"So—do you still want this meditation method?" Margaret said in a sinister tone.
This trait caught Levi completely off guard.
He hesitated for a moment, but in the end, he still nodded.
"Give me the meditation method. I accept your terms."
"When I have the ability, I will help your successor defeat the guardian beast of the White Sand Altar and obtain the remains of the first White Sand Saint Artisan," Levi said.
For him right now, the most important thing was to increase his Spiritual Power as quickly as possible and reach a higher level.
Otherwise, he might not be able to face the coming wrath of the Magic Mirror Queen—once she realized that even a Great Knight could not kill him.
