Chapter 24: The Weight of the Reveal
The vapor in the washroom swirled through the stone chamber in dense white coils, illuminated by the pulsing blue glow of the temperature-moderation runes cut into the masonry. The copper pipes buried in the walls hummed under the strain of continuous water flow, sending a faint vibration through the wet slate under Elian's bare feet. Somewhere on the ground floor, Barnaby was almost certainly asleep, completely unaware that his employer’s strict understanding of biological architecture was currently being dismantled.
Elian’s hands, which had begun this ordeal resting with extreme caution on the wet muscle of Rylia’s waist, slid upward along her ribs as she pulled him deeper into the cascading spray.
In the kitchen, beneath the practical light of the hearth, she had always seemed like a monolithic wall of winter fur. Her everyday silhouette possessed a massive, barrel-chested breadth that easily dwarfed the wooden chairs and tables she regularly navigated around. Under the flattening weight of the rune-heated water, the insulating plushness of her coat matted down to reveal the undeniable anatomical structure beneath. As Elian’s palms moved over the slick heat of her sides, the thick white-and-grey fur pressed flat against her skin like soaking silk, exposing the specific slope of her torso and the pronounced ridges of her obliques.
The heavy curve of her breasts, previously masked by the density of her coat, pushed directly against his chest. They were deeply integrated into the raw strength of her pectoral muscles, adding a new tactile dimension to a frame he had only ever analyzed for its combat leverage and lifting capacity.
Elian shifted his weight on the slippery tiles to maintain his balance. His gaze followed the runoff tracking down the central valley of her chest, over the hard, fur-matted ridges of her abdomen, to the powerful juncture of her thighs. Stripped of her heavy leather faulds, her sex was laid entirely bare. It was prominent and heavy, framed by soaked, darker fur that sleeked back to expose the deeply swollen length of her slit. The hot water ran freely over the thick, plush outer lips, highlighting the pale, flushed flesh hidden within. She was already weeping, the slick evidence of her arousal mixing with the bathwater and filling the steamy room with the sharp, electric musk of a hunting predator.
His fingers involuntarily curled into the wet strands of her fur.
"The fur," he said, pitching his voice to carry over the constant hiss of the falling water. "It hides a lot."
Rylia let out a low, rumbling laugh that started deep in her chest and vibrated directly into Elian’s sternum. She leaned back, bracing one hand against the tiled wall to look down at him through the rising vapor. Her icy blue eyes were dilated in the dim light, crinkling at the corners with fierce amusement.
“Frost Wolves are built for the high mountain storms, Elian,” she whispered, her voice carrying a resonant depth that easily cut through the ambient noise of the shower. “The winter coat serves to trap the core heat and turn away the ice, masking our true shape from the prey until we decide to strike.”
She reached out and wrapped her thick fingers around his wrist. Her wet palm entirely dwarfed his hand, and she deliberately guided his arm upward to press his palm against the warm, slick curve of her breast. She held his fingers there against the wet skin and fur, pinning his hand in place so he could feel the powerful, frantic thrum of her heart beating against his fingertips.
“Do you find the structural reveal to your liking, architect?” she teased, lowering her head until her wet nose brushed his damp forehead.
Elian struggled to formulate a coherent response as he attempted to process the sheer scale of her presence. He had spent weeks analyzing her purely as a Vanguard elite—a specialized scout capable of hauling timber off the logging trails and surviving out on the monster-haunted perimeter roads for days on end. Pressed flush against her in the blinding steam, he was acutely aware that she was a very large, incredibly powerful woman looking at him with absolute, undivided focus.
“I think,” Elian managed, blinking water out of his eyelashes as his free hand drifted down to trace the flared line of her plush hip, “the Golden Leaf Emporium severely lacked the proper diagrams for this particular structural reality.”
Rylia’s laugh boomed off the damp stone walls, rich with victorious delight, and she immediately swept him off his feet. One arm secured his thighs while the other wrapped around his back, lifting him from the basin floor as if he possessed the mass of a wooden dining chair. She carried him to the edge of the stone wash and pressed his back against the warm, rune-etched wall, anchoring him in place with the radiant heat of her body while a stray rivulet of water splashed over their ankles.
“Those Guild manuals are written for paved-road scholars who have never spent a night shivering in a snowbank,” she rumbled, dipping her face into the crook of his neck to inhale the cedar soap still clinging to his skin. “You need to leave the ink and the sketches behind to learn how things actually fit together.”
Reaching out with one furred arm, she wrenched the heavy brass valve clockwise. The water abruptly shut off with a metallic clack, leaving behind a sudden silence broken only by their synchronized breathing and the steady drip of runoff slipping from their bodies into the basin. Rylia stepped over the stone lip of the wash without setting him down. Snagging a large linen towel from the adjacent iron rack, she wrapped the fabric securely around both of them to trap their collective body heat against the chill of the ambient air.
She carried him straight across the dark floorboards of the loft toward the oversized, leather-suspended bed-frame dominating the corner. The room beyond the washbasin smelled of dry pine ash from the dying hearth below, illuminated by pale moonlight spilling through the frosted windowpane. Elian stared at the massive wooden joints of the bed as they approached, mentally calculating the shear strength of the iron bolts he had driven into the crossbeams the week prior to support her considerable mass.
“Tomorrow morning, the rest of the Vanguard returns from the western ridge,” Rylia whispered into the dark, her breath hot against his collarbone as she crossed the remaining distance. “The trade road will be packed with loud wagons, and this entire tavern is going to be incredibly demanding.”
She lowered him slowly onto the thick wool quilt, letting her massive hands drag along his bare waist to pull the linen towel away. Her blue eyes gleamed in the dim light, the wet tips of her fur catching the silver moonlight.
“But for tonight, the den is closed,” she murmured, her voice dropping into a dark, anticipatory thrill. “And I am looking forward to fully enjoying a human cock. The brothels in the capital operate under far too many Guild rules. You simply cannot have any real fun in them.”
Elian looked up at her, entirely distracted by the ambient heat radiating from her skin and the complete collapse of his usual analytical detachment. His Tavern-master mind offered one final, desperate attempt at logistical structure.
“The bed,” he said hoarsely, gripping the edge of the wool quilt beneath him, “is rated for significant dynamic stress. I did properly reinforce the frame.”
Rylia smiled, revealing a row of sharp white teeth in the shadows. Climbing onto the mattress with the smooth, deliberate certainty of a creature fully claiming its territory, she shifted her immense weight over him.
“Good,” she said softly, her voice thick with anticipation. “Then let us see whether your calculations were conservative.”
