Chapter 48: The Resignation
The massive gates of the military outpost hummed as they slid open, admitting Hyun-woo, Medusa, Vespera, and Sergeant Nesta into the sterile, reinforced interior of the base.
The contrast was jarring. Magical stone gave way to cold modern military architecture, with glowing defensive runes reinforcing thick steel walls and enchanted barriers layered heavily over security checkpoints.
Soldiers and awakened personnel froze mid-step when they saw who was walking into the military base, staring openly at the group. Whispers spread through the corridors like wildfire.
“Is that… Mistress Medusa?”
“And who the hell is the woman with the black skin? Another Guardian, perhaps…?”
Hyun-woo kept his expression calm, though his shoulders tensed slightly under the heavy weight of all the attention.
Medusa walked with elegant poise, her cool hand still linked comfortably with his, while Vespera clung securely to his other arm.
Nesta cleared her throat. “This way, Hyun-woo. The higher-ups have been waiting to speak with you. They want a debrief on… everything that’s happened.”
What? I am here to resign, not to be interrogated by the higher-ups, Hyun-woo thought, frowning slightly.
Nesta gestured toward a secure corridor leading deeper into the command wing. “If you’ll come with me to the briefing room…”
Instead of following her directly, Hyun-woo stopped. He turned first to Medusa, leaning in close to whisper against her ear, his breath warm against her cool skin.
“….”
Medusa’s emerald eyes flickered with reluctant understanding. She gave the tiniest nod, her snakes brushing affectionately against his cheek for a brief second.
Then, he turned to Vespera, whispering softly into her other ear. “Go home, Vespera. I will meet you at the house.”
Vespera’s six golden eyes narrowed, clearly displeased, but she gave a dramatic huff and nodded once.
In the next heartbeat, both women vanished.
Nesta’s eyes widened in alarm. “What… what did you just tell them?”
Hyun-woo offered a small, sheepish smile. “They were called back for their Guardian duties. The Vault doesn’t like leaving the outer territories unguarded for too long.”
Nesta stared at him for a long moment, clearly not buying the simple explanation, but she wisely chose not to press the issue. It's not like I could physically force him to comply anyway, she reasoned internally.
“Right… This way, then,” she said.
She led him through several heavily guarded checkpoints and into a large, dimly lit control room. The walls were lined with tactical screens displaying real-time maps of global hotspots, climbing casualty reports, and live satellite feeds from Eden’s Vault sectors.
Seated around a long, reinforced table were the highest-ranking officers of the United States military: generals, colonels, and elite awakened strategists, all of whom turned their sharp, calculating gazes on him the moment he entered.
Since men were strictly forbidden from physically entering Eden’s Vault, the assembled military leaders were all high-definition holographic projections. But their authority was very real. After all, this previously unremarkable normie had become a living anomaly, and every faction in the world wanted to get their hands on him.
At the head of the table sat General Harlan Reeves, a grizzled man in his late fifties with steel-gray hair and a piercing blue gaze.
“Private Hyun-woo,” the General said, his voice heavy with command. “Or should I say… the man who single-handedly turned the tide in Pearland and somehow survived the darkest depths of Eden’s Vault. Sit down.”
Hyun-woo took the offered seat, his posture relaxed but polite. The weight of every intense stare in the room pressed down on him.
General Reeves leaned forward. “We’ll cut straight to it. We’ve seen the footage. A normie with no recorded Talent punches a superior officer, gets sent to die in Eden’s Vault… and then suddenly becomes strong enough to destroy Harrowers bare-handed and walk around with Gorgon Mistresses like it’s a Sunday stroll. The world is burning out there. We need answers. What the hell happened to you?”
Hyun-woo met the General’s eyes steadily, his soft, pretty face perfectly calm despite the suffocating tension.
“I awakened my Talent,” he said simply. “And I made some friends along the way.”
A murmur rippled across the table. Another high-ranking officer, a Colonel with sharp, predatory features, slammed a holographic hand on the table.
“Friends? You’re consorting with monsters who could level entire cities! We need to know if you’re still loyal to this country, or if you’ve been… compromised.”
Hyun-woo’s expression didn’t change, but his voice carried a quiet, unbreakable steel beneath its usual gentleness.
“I’m here to formally resign my commission. I’ve already served my time in hell. Whatever comes next… I’ll face it with the people who stood by me when no one else did.”
The room erupted into overlapping voices—loud demands for more information, thinly veiled threats, and desperate offers of immediate reinstatement with massive monetary bonuses.
General Reeves raised a hand for silence, staring hard at the young man across the table.
“This conversation isn’t over, son.”
The control room fell into a heavy, oppressive silence.
The tactical screens flickered with casualty counts and monster-sighting reports, casting an ominous red glow across the faces of the assembled officers.
Hyun-woo sat quietly, his hands resting on the table. His expression remained calm, almost gentle, but there was a quiet, unyielding resolve in his brown eyes that hadn’t been there a year ago.
General Reeves leaned closer to the projection lens, his voice dropping low and threatening. “Let me make this very clear, son. You don’t get to just resign after becoming whatever the hell you are now. You’re a walking national asset… whether you like it or not. The President himself has been briefed. You will cooperate fully. You will tell us exactly what happened in that Vault, how you gained your power, and most importantly… how we can use those monster women you’re attached to for the war effort.”
A female colonel who had been silent until now spoke up smoothly. “Or we can make things incredibly difficult for you. Your family back in Korea? Your old unit? We can classify you as a severe security risk. A traitor. One word from us, and you’ll never see daylight again.”
Another officer slammed a digital folder on the table. “We know you’re close with Medusa and the others. You will bring them in. You will convince them to work with us. Refuse… and we’ll treat you as a hostile combatant right here, right now.”
The tension in the room thickened like choking smoke. Several armed guards near the doors shifted their weight nervously, their hands hovering over their weapons.
Hyun-woo let out a quiet sigh, his soft face showing disappointment rather than fear. “I came here to resign peacefully. I don’t want trouble. But I won’t be used as a tool. Not by you pathetic lot.”
General Reeves’ face darkened with rage. “You’re in no position to negotiate, boy. Guards—”
Before the order could be finished, a cool, incredibly elegant voice sliced through the room like a freezing winter wind.
“Enough.”
A ripple of brilliant emerald energy shimmered across Hyun-woo’s chest.
From beneath the enchanted black combat tunic Seraphina had just made him, Medusa emerged, literally stepping out from his clothes as if she had been seamlessly woven into the fabric itself.
Her long serpent tail coiled gracefully behind her as she materialized fully, her emerald scales gleaming dangerously under the harsh fluorescent lights. Her snake-hair hissed with lethal intent, and her golden eyes glowed with cold, unadulterated fury.
The entire room froze.
Medusa placed one highly possessive hand on Hyun-woo’s shoulder, standing tall and imposing beside him. The temperature in the room plummeted several degrees.
“You dare threaten my human?” she said softly, her voice carrying the crushing weight of an apex predator. “How incredibly foolish.”
Terrified gasps and the sharp mechanical clicks of weapons being drawn filled the room. General Reeves shot to his feet, his face entirely drained of color. “Medusa…! Stand down! This is a secure military installation—”
Medusa’s eyes flashed with a blinding, petrifying light.
Several guards who had instinctively raised their rifles suddenly stiffened, their bodies turning partially gray as solid stone crept rapidly up their arms, locking them in place.
“It seems I have been far too lenient with you. And that’s Mistress Medusa to you,” she replied coldly, glaring at the holograms. “It seems your country needs to disappear. Hyun-woo is under my protection. If any of you insects so much as point another weapon at him, I will turn your entire nation into a garden of statues.”
Hyun-woo gently placed his hand over Medusa’s on his shoulder, trying to de-escalate. “Medusa… it’s okay. I can handle this.”
But the damage was already done. The situation had escalated wildly out of control. The officers were shouting panicked orders, red emergency alarms were beginning to blare, and the tension was exactly one wrong word away from turning the room into a blood-soaked battlefield.
Medusa leaned down slightly, her cool breath brushing Hyun-woo’s ear as she whispered, “You told me to stay hidden until needed. They threatened you. That is all the permission I needed.”
Hyun-woo closed his eyes for a brief second, caught squarely between his desire for a peaceful exit and the world-ending protective fury of the woman who had chosen him.
This resignation was definitely no longer going to be simple, he thought. Who would have guessed my hunch was correct?
