I Alone Breed Dragons

"There’s no way we’ll agree to such."

"Yes," they all grumbled, muttering their dissatisfaction. I turned to Lilnex, her parchment was still before her, she hadn’t picked it up. Didn’t bother.

Aria, on the other hand, didn’t show any reaction, her eyes moved from line to line. "I believe most of this amendment is fine."

"You really think changing the law to allow peasants to wield magic will be a good idea." The vice chancellor of Kingston asked, a stern man with blond hair, hairy, with a hardened face.

"Yes, I believe so," she replied to him calmly. "But the problem is the neutralizing of our border security, making it available for this new peace knights to enter the dragon kingdom freely, is where I’ll have a problem with, I believe the queen would also."

"Well, the queen isn’t here to dictate. Besides, you dragons have broken so many rules — when Walter was sold to you, our agreement was to keep him contained in the dragon kingdom, allowing him to freely depart from your border was a violation. Take this as a punishment. And if the queen has a problem, she should address it herself. For now, the Baroness and Commander of your border warriors have agreed to the cause."

’Nice, she’s following the script I gave her.’

I made Stephanie aware the queen was unavailable, and she should use it if Aria tried to object.

"The Kingston Magic Academy’s knowledge of magic being shared with the peace knights is something I also want to address. We at Kingston keep our research confidential, sharing it with this so-called peace knights will be violating our policies," the Kingston vice chancellor asked.

"All of those will need to be amended, there’s no negotiation, we need your research to aid the peace knights, we need them at their best," Stephanie replied. "Those are the three laws that will be amended, so we will be voting on the establishment of Peace Knights. Agreeing to it means amending the laws to suit the purpose."

"I have an objection." I raised my hand. Every eye turned to me. Stephanie gaged. What are you doing?

"Before any objection, I object for the reasons — why are dragons at this meeting." My words sparked different reactions, this was supposed to be a secret meeting, for humans only. This was supposed to be a plan against dragons the day they decided to be a threat. The nobles exchanged glances at each other.

I stood up. "Haven’t you seen how strong they are, we’re nothing against them. The Peace Knights are our fighting chance, our kids can’t fight these monsters, we need stronger, trained individuals," I said, putting up an act, my voice dropped, like I was worried.

"Amor, what are you doing?" Aria asked, her eyes narrowed on me.

"If you refuse now, you’ll be putting smiles on the dragons’ faces for being foolish."

"Rest assured, we don’t intend on taking your lands, we won’t." I promise, despite Aria’s words to comfort, it did nothing, my plan was working perfectly, to put confusion, fear, build a rift between the council members of dragons and humans, with no choice but to side with their own, agreeing to the proposed Peace Knights.

"How can we believe your words, you’re not the queen."

"..."

"The Peace Knights might be independent, but they’ll aid us in case things go sideways, we are the ones who need protection, not dragons, and if you’re willing to face death because you believe what the dragons told you — their oath to live peacefully with us... do you believe that oath? Then you’re deceiving yourselves, we don’t have a choice but to protect our kind," I added.

Silence then followed as everyone held their heads down in thought.

I turned to Stephanie and nodded.

She cleared her throat. "Okay, let’s vote again, truly this time. All those in favor." I swept my eyes through the room.

All nobles were in favor, even Lilnex. I raised an eyebrow, seriously.

"What are you doing," Aria said.

"I’d like to see what kind of army will be built. Let’s see how strong and how far their reach compares to Lilnex."

"Hmph."

"All those against." Just Aria, and Marlon, the male dragon, treasurer of the council.

"It’s settled, the Peace Knights will be established."

"Then who will be in charge of the Peace Knights, will dragons also be admitted into the army." Aria shot the question, and everyone’s attention was shifted to Stephanie, awaiting her answer.

"No, dragons wouldn’t be allowed into the peace army either. The supreme general of the army is already chosen, on behalf of the king. Order, I announce: Walter Avant as the supreme general of the peace army."

Murmurs erupted in the room. "What!?"

"The king?!"

Their eyes were all pinned on me. I leaned into my chair with the calm confidence of a mastermind who had already planned every single move.

I shifted my gaze to Aria, her calmness faltered, our eyes met.

I didn’t know the king, neither did he know me, but he trusted whoever Stephanie picked, and she chose me... without a choice, having the king supposedly pick me, no one could object. Which finalized my plan — having full control of the Peace Knights meant I chose who got recruited and had the final say, and making it independent meant I couldn’t be ordered by the king or council no matter the reason. Perfect.

Still, Aria had to object.

"At the end, this can’t all work out because the queen isn’t around to share her magic, besides, is that even what we’re talking about."

"I forgot, Lord Walter can grant magic using the same method as the queen, though yet to be confirmed."

"He can grant magic."

"That has to be impossible."

Another wave of awe washed over the room. Even Lilnex’s eyes landed on me, another thing which caught her attention.

"For those reasons, he’s suited to be the supreme general of the Peace Knights," Stephanie added.
