Chapter 560 - 559: I Am Worthy of You
When Su Li heard Li Xian praising Little Tang Mo, she couldn’t help but smile.
"He’s a smart boy."
Li Xian chuckled and dropped the subject.
’If he didn’t drop it, he might overstep and say something about accepting Tang Mo, which wasn’t his place. Stopping while he was ahead was the most appropriate course of action.’
"Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot of praise for Wu Sheng. He’s been working very hard."
Since Li Xian knew that Su Li was aware of who he was, he continued speaking, a faint note of pride and amusement in his voice.
Su Li was a little surprised, yet it also felt natural. She nodded without a word, waiting for him to continue.
"He used to be a bit lazy, but this time, he’s changed completely."
Li Xian repeated what Wu Sheng had said before, a hint of a smile on his face.
Su Li hadn’t expected Li Xian to say something like that, and she certainly never imagined Wu Sheng had actually said—and done—such a thing.
She was stunned for a long moment, then an uncontrollable smile bloomed on her face.
Su Li’s smile was radiant and sweet, without a hint of gloom or even the slightest trace of polite courtesy.
This was a genuine, heartfelt smile.
Watching Su Li smile, Li Xian lowered his head and took a sip of his tea.
’He’d met Su Li twice, and both times her gaze had been complicated, her smiles merely polite. It was a rare treat to see her smile so genuinely.’
’That boy Wu Sheng cherishes her, and she cherishes him in return. That’s good enough.’
’A wife is very important to a man. If that wife can inspire him to become better and better, then she is the best kind of wife.’
’Regardless of what outsiders might say, the fact that Wu Sheng could change so dramatically because of Su Li was the best possible outcome.’
"Since I ran into you today, I just wanted to say a couple of things. You probably haven’t heard what Wu Sheng said."
Su Li listened to Li Xian and nodded. "That’s right, I haven’t."
Li Xian looked at Su Li earnestly. "You two... live a happy life together."
It was his blessing, and his hope for them.
Su Li looked into Li Xian’s eyes. She recalled what Wu Sheng had told her about the things Li Xian had done, and she thought of Li Kai Xuan. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes and nodded.
"We will."
’We will. We’ll live a good life together and be very happy.’
Li Xian had matters to attend to, so he didn’t say anything more before leaving the teahouse.
Su Li rose politely to see him out, then left the teahouse herself.
The summer sun always rose early, and the day would heat up quickly. Mornings were much nicer, however, thanks to the gentle breeze.
Su Li looked up at the glaring sun, feeling the breeze on her face, and was suddenly filled with an intense desire to hear Wu Sheng’s voice.
She seemed to be like this all the time lately, always struck by sudden impulses.
The urge to hear his voice, or the urge to see him.
Su Li, who was always a little slow to process her own feelings, seemed to have belatedly entered the honeymoon phase after being with Wu Sheng for so long.
With that thought, Su Li turned on her heel and hurried toward a nearby public phone booth, her skirt fluttering as she went.
Her steps were light and joyful. Her skirt caught the breeze, swaying with her every move, and her soft, jet-black hair flew up behind her.
At that moment, Su Li looked just like any other young woman in the throes of love, a sight that would make any onlooker smile knowingly.
Youth and a smile are a beautiful combination, and Su Li happened to have a lovely face on top of it all.
Unaware that she had become a picturesque sight for passersby, Su Li skipped lightly into the phone booth and dialed the number she knew by heart.
The phone barely rang twice before someone picked up.
"Hello?"
Hearing Wu Sheng’s voice, Su Li didn’t say anything, but simply laughed.
She only laughed for a moment, but Wu Sheng recognized it immediately.
"Su Li? What made you decide to call? You sound so happy. Did something good happen?"
"I hear you’ve been working very hard lately for our wedding?" Su Li asked with a smile.
On the other end of the line, Wu Sheng rubbed his nose. "Who’s the blabbermouth who told you? I’m still working toward a result here..."
"You’re being so conspicuous about it, who needs to tell me?" Su Li said, her voice filled with laughter.
Wu Sheng couldn’t help but laugh along with her. "It’s a little embarrassing..." he said awkwardly.
"Pfft..." Su Li snorted with laughter. "You can feel embarrassed? I thought you didn’t even know what that word meant."
"Why can’t I be embarrassed..." Wu Sheng muttered. "Did you call to praise me?"
"Nope," Su Li denied.
"Nope? It’s really not?"
"Of course not." The corners of Su Li’s mouth curled up. "I just wanted to tell you that I’ll be working hard, too."
For a moment, Wu Sheng didn’t understand. "What?"
"You dunce. I said I’ll be working hard, too. I called just to tell you that."
Su Li’s laughing voice came through the receiver. "Alright, that’s all I wanted to say, so I’m hanging up. You’re still at work, and I can’t be inconsiderate and keep you on the phone."
"Su Li, wait a second—" Wu Sheng hurriedly tried to stop her.
"Wait for what? Can’t wait, we’ve been on for almost two minutes already. I’m hanging up. Be good, get back to work, and try your best. Don’t make promises you can’t keep."
Su Li giggled. "Hanging up, bye-bye."
With that, Su Li hung up the phone with satisfying abruptness.
Wu Sheng was left speechless. "......You can’t just do that!"
The hand Wu Sheng was using to grip the receiver trembled. He wanted to be frustrated, yet he couldn’t suppress the smile tugging at his lips. He wanted to be simply happy, but he was also vexed.
For her to call him just for that, telling him to be a good boy and get back to work... it was just infuriating.
If Wu Sheng had lived in a later era, he would have recognized Su Li’s behavior for what it was: a flirt-and-run.
While Wu Sheng tried to calm himself down and get back to work, a satisfied Su Li stepped out of the phone booth.
She spread her arms, tilted her head back toward the sky, and took a deep breath with her eyes closed. "Gotta work hard, Su Li. Work hard."
Before her rebirth, Su Li had always worked hard. After her rebirth, she continued to strive. But she decided that from this day forward, she would work even harder.
Su Li started walking again, clenching her hands into fists and giving a determined pump.
"Work hard. Work hard to become someone worthy of you."
Su Li murmured to herself as she walked toward Professor Mu Feng’s house, her eyes filled with resolve.
Before her divorce from Tang Yuanxiao, back in Xinghua Village, Su Li had heard people say that marrying him was a blessing she must have earned over several lifetimes.
In other words, it meant she wasn’t worthy of Tang Yuanxiao.
Later, after she divorced Tang Yuanxiao and got into university, no one said that anymore.
But after she got together with Wu Sheng, the talk about her not being worthy of him followed her like a shadow, even to this day.
Su Li didn’t get angry when she heard those things, but she couldn’t just let them slide, either.
She wanted to be someone worthy of Wu Sheng. She didn’t want to spend the rest of her life hearing people say that she wasn’t good enough for him.
It was true that you live your life for yourself, and you shouldn’t pay too much mind to idle gossip, but she couldn’t be completely indifferent to it.
More than anything, she wanted to hear people say: "Su Li is a perfect match for Wu Sheng! They’re made for each other!"
Wu Sheng was working hard for their future. She had to work hard, too—to become a better, more outstanding person who was truly worthy of him.
