MARVEL/DC: DOCTOR IN THE MULTIVERSE

Chapter 167: Bruce's Silence

Two days later.

Gotham City.

Wayne Tower.

Bruce Wayne stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.

In his hand was a cup of coffee that had gone cold nearly an hour ago.

He had just ended a call with Tony Stark.

During that conversation, Tony had displayed a level of excitement Bruce rarely heard.

Not confidence.

Not arrogance.

Excitement.

The dangerous kind.

The kind that appeared whenever Tony believed he had found a solution to a problem no one else could solve.

An idea.

A very ambitious idea.

Using the energy characteristics of Loki's Scepter as the foundation for an entirely new computational architecture.

Using the information density hidden inside an Infinity Stone to power a planetary defense intelligence.

After listening for twenty minutes, Bruce had asked only one question.

"Who gave you this idea?"

Tony's response had been immediate.

"Nobody."

A pause.

Then—

"I came up with it myself."

Bruce remained silent.

"Tony."

"...Fine."

Another pause.

"Lynn mentioned the Scepter while we were talking."

Bruce said nothing.

The call ended shortly afterward.

For the next fifteen minutes, he simply stood by the window.

Watching Gotham.

Thinking.

Then he walked back toward the Batcomputer.

A familiar encrypted folder waited on the main display.

L.

Bruce opened it.

The file had grown enormous.

Patient records.

Behavioral analyses.

Energy readings.

Combat observations.

Psychological profiles.

Every interaction involving Lynn over the past several years.

He turned to the latest page.

Then began typing.

"Subject voluntarily revealed information concerning Loki's Scepter and the Mind Stone to Tony Stark."

He paused.

Then added:

"Intent unknown."

A few seconds later, he created a new section.

Possible explanations:

Guide the Avengers toward remaining HYDRA forces in Eastern Europe.Obtain indirect data regarding the Mind Stone through Tony Stark's research.Deliberately accelerate a future event beneficial to Lynn's long-term plans.

Bruce stared at the screen.

Thinking.

Then he added a fourth line.

All of the above simultaneously.

That possibility concerned him most.

Because it matched Lynn's historical behavior pattern.

Every action appeared to accomplish multiple objectives at once.

Every conversation served several purposes.

Every piece of information was released at precisely the correct time.

Never too early.

Never too late.

Bruce saved the note.

Then closed the file.

Several minutes later, he activated an encrypted channel.

Tony answered immediately.

"Wayne."

"What now?"

Bruce ignored the irritation in Tony's voice.

"The Scepter."

"What about it?"

"How are you planning to locate it?"

Tony sounded almost offended.

"I do know how investigations work."

Bruce waited.

Tony sighed.

"Fine."

"I had Jarvis cross-reference every known HYDRA operation that survived the collapse of S.H.I.E.L.D."

"Then I compared energy signatures recovered from New York."

"The Scepter leaves a very distinctive radiation pattern."

"Not electromagnetic."

"Not thermal."

"Something stranger."

Bruce nodded.

That matched S.H.I.E.L.D.'s archived records.

Tony continued.

"If it's active anywhere in Eastern Europe, there should be traces."

Bruce opened another window.

"I've already narrowed the search."

A file transfer request appeared on Tony's screen.

"What is this?"

"Wayne Satellite data."

Bruce enlarged several images.

Thermal anomalies.

Electromagnetic disturbances.

Underground facility mapping.

Months of surveillance records.

"Three dedicated reconnaissance satellites."

"The Balkans."

"Six months of collection."

Tony whistled.

"You really don't trust anybody."

"No."

"Fair enough."

Several seconds passed.

Then Bruce spoke again.

"One more thing."

Tony immediately sounded suspicious.

"What?"

"How did Lynn know about the Scepter?"

Silence.

Three seconds.

Four.

Then—

"He said he's a doctor."

Bruce closed his eyes.

Of course.

"He knows everything."

"That's exactly what he told me."

Tony sounded amused.

Bruce wasn't.

A doctor.

Running a private clinic.

Knowing classified information concerning an Infinity Stone hidden by HYDRA after the collapse of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The explanation was absurd.

And yet nobody questioned it.

Because the information kept being correct.

Bruce opened his eyes.

Part of him wanted to say it.

To finally speak the conclusion he had reached months ago.

Lynn was the masked man.

The probability had already exceeded ninety-five percent.

Maybe higher.

Every new incident pushed the number upward.

The Fisk assassination.

The impossible intelligence network.

The precision of his interventions.

The knowledge he should not possess.

The timing.

Everything fit.

But Bruce didn't say it.

Not because he doubted the conclusion.

Because he lacked proof that would convince Tony.

And because the consequences of being wrong were enormous.

Instead, he said something simpler.

"Be careful."

Tony laughed softly.

"That's unusually vague."

Bruce ignored him.

"When you find the Scepter, don't use it immediately."

"Let me analyze it first."

"I'll try."

"Try harder."

"You're becoming paranoid."

Bruce didn't respond.

The call ended.

Silence returned to the Batcave.

Bruce stared at the dark monitor for a long time.

Then he reopened the Alpha-Zero contingency file.

A new note was added beneath the section labeled:

MIND-LEVEL INTERFERENCE RISKS

"If Lynn is actively guiding human organizations toward obtaining a Mind Stone-level power source, the possibility exists that he is indirectly advancing an objective he cannot—or chooses not to—complete personally."

Pause.

Then another line.

"Maintain caution."

Bruce saved the file.

Closed it.

Then leaned back in his chair.

For several minutes, he sat motionless.

The sound of underground water echoed through the cavern.

...

Winter passed.

New York.

Miracle Clinic.

Lynn sat behind the reception desk.

In his hand was an unusually extravagant New Year's card.

Pure gold.

Heavy enough to be used as a paperweight.

The message had been engraved in elegant Arabic calligraphy.

"To the greatest healer."

"May God bless you."

Signed:

Abdul.

The Middle Eastern oil magnate whose kidneys Lynn had repaired months earlier.

Lynn glanced at the card.

Then tossed it into a drawer.

The past year had been eventful.

The Avengers had spent months dismantling the remnants of HYDRA.

The battlefront stretched across multiple continents.

Eastern Europe.

North Africa.

South America.

Parts of Southeast Asia.

Tony Stark and Steve Rogers had personally participated in dozens of operations.

At least twelve major HYDRA strongholds had been destroyed.

Bruce Wayne continued operating as Gotham's Dark Knight.

Publicly, nothing had changed.

Privately, Project Veronica continued advancing.

The Alpha-Zero contingency framework continued expanding.

Bruce's communication pattern had also changed.

Months ago, every conversation had been a probe.

A test.

A trap.

Now the messages arrived only once or twice a month.

Most appeared academic.

Questions about Kryptonian cellular energy conversion.

The behavior of vibranium alloys under extreme temperatures.

Theoretical interactions between alien biological structures and electromagnetic fields.

Normal topics.

On the surface.

Lynn knew better.

Every question was another measurement.

Another attempt to define the boundaries of his knowledge.

Another data point.

So he cooperated.

Each answer arrived promptly.

Each answer contained valuable information.

But never the truly important parts.

Enough to reward curiosity.

Never enough to reveal the core.

The game continued.

Neither side acknowledged it.

Neither side stopped.

Fury had largely vanished.

Officially, S.H.I.E.L.D. no longer existed.

Unofficially, Fury was rebuilding.

Quietly.

Patiently.

Occasionally, messages reached Lynn through layers of intermediaries.

Usually requests.

Sometimes complaints.

Never greetings.

...

Eastern Europe.

Sokovia.

A small nation buried within the Balkan region.

For generations, wars had passed through it like storms.

Buildings carried more bullet scars than paint.

Entire districts still bore the marks of earlier conflicts.

Near Novi Grad.

Far beyond public roads.

An abandoned military installation stood hidden among the mountains.

From above, it appeared worthless.

Cracked concrete.

Collapsed watchtowers.

Overgrown vegetation.

A forgotten Soviet-era relic.

But appearances were deceptive.

Beneath the ruins existed an enormous underground complex.

Nine subterranean levels.

Research laboratories.

Weapons facilities.

Containment chambers.

Power generation systems.

Command centers.

After HYDRA's global collapse, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker had retreated here with the remnants of his organization.

And he possessed something priceless.

Loki's Scepter.

Recovered after the Battle of New York.

Hidden during HYDRA's infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Transported secretly to Sokovia years earlier.

At the top of the golden staff rested a blue gem.

The Mind Stone.

One of the six Infinity Stones.

Strucker had spent years experimenting with it.

At first, his ambitions were straightforward.

Create enhanced humans.

Build an army.

Replace conventional soldiers.

The results were catastrophic.

Most test subjects died almost immediately.

Massive cerebral hemorrhaging.

Cardiac failure.

Total neural collapse.

Some survived physically but lost their minds.

Screaming.

Violent.

Broken.

Hundreds failed.

Then two succeeded.

Twins.

Pietro Maximoff.

Wanda Maximoff.

The children of Sokovia.

Subjects who somehow endured direct exposure to the Stone.

Pietro emerged transformed.

His nervous system accelerated beyond normal biological limitations.

His body moved at extraordinary speed.

Far beyond any Olympic athlete.

Far beyond conventional human reaction times.

Wanda's result was different.

Much more complicated.

Much more dangerous.

Even Strucker did not fully understand what had awakened inside her.

At first, he considered the twins a miracle.

Proof his research worked.

Proof HYDRA could create superhumans.

Proof the Mind Stone could be weaponized.

But that optimism had faded.

HYDRA was dying.

Funding channels were collapsing.

Supply routes were disappearing.

Bases were being destroyed one after another.

The Avengers were getting closer.

And every month, Baron Strucker found himself with fewer soldiers...

and more enemies.
