MARVEL/DC: DOCTOR IN THE MULTIVERSE

Chapter 52 Fury's Scarlet Notes

A raven insignia.

Shadow Raven.

Kingpin's elite assassination unit.

Nick Fury turned to the second page of the field report.

The informant had included another detail.

The following morning—

Miracle Clinic appeared completely normal.

Doors intact.

Windows intact.

Front steps cleaned thoroughly.

The clinic even opened on schedule as though nothing had happened during the night.

Fury read the sentence twice.

"Six elite assassins trained under Bullseye-derived methodology."

"All neutralized by a single individual."

His tone didn't change much.

But his speech slowed slightly.

"No emergency calls."

"No police response."

"No recoverable evidence."

"The scene cleanup was almost surgical."

He placed the report aside and picked up the second document.

Three days earlier, Fury had personally ordered the analysis division to compile it.

Title:

Correlation Analysis Between Subject 'Lynn' and Post-Treatment Ability Growth

Four full pages.

But the central conclusion reduced to a single statement:

After Lynn treats a superhuman subject, his own observable physical and cognitive abilities display significant growth patterns closely resembling the abilities of the treated individual.

Fury flipped to the final timeline chart.

After treating The Punisher—

Abnormal regenerative improvement.

After treating Luke Cage—

Suspected enhanced durability.

After treating Jessica Jones—

Significant increase in strength.

After treating Black Widow—

Professional combat-skill emergence.

After treating Captain America—

Comprehensive leap in physical capability.

Every treatment event connected directly to a corresponding growth spike.

The arrows formed a sharply rising curve across the screen.

Fury stared at the graph for nearly ten seconds.

Then he reopened Lynn's electronic file.

Original evaluation:

High-value cooperative asset.

Second annotation, added after Natasha Romanoff's surgery:

Potential unknown threat. Continuous monitoring authorized.

Fury added a third line manually.

Red text.

Subject's growth rate exceeds all previously observed models.

High-value cooperative asset.

Potential unknown threat.

Contingency planning recommended.

He saved the file.

Then pressed the intercom.

"Hill."

Maria Hill answered immediately.

"Yes, Director."

"Increase surveillance around Miracle Clinic by one level."

"Expand monitoring coverage around 49th Street to two surrounding blocks."

"Add satellite thermal imaging."

"Understood."

A brief pause.

"Do we deploy additional field agents?"

"No."

Fury leaned back slightly.

"Technical surveillance only."

Another pause.

"Don't let him notice."

Hill hesitated briefly.

"Director… with his current sensory profile, concealment probability is decreasing."

"Then improve concealment methods."

Fury interrupted calmly.

"I don't intend to lose this collaborator."

"At least not yet."

The line disconnected.

Fury leaned back in the chair and stared upward at the ceiling.

Two months earlier—

Lynn had simply been an unusually talented street doctor.

One month earlier—

Fury considered him a valuable strategic asset.

Now—

The term "asset" no longer felt sufficient.

A man whose power evolved continuously.

Whose growth accelerated far beyond predictive models.

Whose development correlated directly with increasingly dangerous superhuman individuals.

If such a person became hostile—

The consequences would be catastrophic.

If he remained allied—

That alliance needed preservation at all costs.

Fury reopened the communication channel again.

"Hill."

"Yes, Director?"

"One additional instruction."

"Go ahead."

"Have tactical analysis begin drafting contingency protocols."

A short silence followed.

"Contingency protocols… for Lynn?"

"In a worst-case scenario."

Fury's voice remained calm.

"What operational methods do we currently possess capable of containing him?"

Two seconds passed before Hill answered.

"Current intelligence suggests standard firearms are ineffective."

"His strength exceeds peak-human parameters."

"His sensory radius is abnormally advanced."

"And his tactical combat capability already approaches high-level field operatives."

Another pause.

"If his growth continues…"

"I asked what we have," Fury said quietly, "not what problems we face."

"…Understood."

"I'll have tactical division begin assessment immediately."

The channel closed.

Fury looked one final time at Lynn's personnel photo.

Gold-rimmed glasses.

Gentle expression.

White coat.

An ordinary-looking young doctor.

Fury knew better than most people on Earth that the most dangerous individuals often appeared harmless.

He turned the monitor off.

…

Miracle Clinic.

Late night.

Lynn lay on the folding bed upstairs with his eyes closed.

His sensory radius remained stable at approximately two hundred meters.

Everything appeared quiet.

The remaining members of Shadow Raven had not returned after The Punisher handled extraction cleanup.

But Lynn knew the environment had changed.

Since the previous day—

Electromagnetic activity around the clinic had increased noticeably.

Satellite sweep frequencies doubled across several bands.

Thermal-imaging scans occurred at more regular intervals.

S.H.I.E.L.D..

Fury had escalated surveillance exactly as expected.

Lynn also detected another shift.

The bat-shaped reconnaissance drone roughly seven hundred meters away had changed location again.

Previous position:

Office-building rooftop.

Current position:

Behind the water tower of an apartment building west of the clinic.

The drone itself had also changed.

Quieter propulsion.

Lower infrared signature.

Still insufficient.

Not against his senses.

Two observers.

One from Fury.

One from Batman.

One evaluating threat level and strategic value.

The other attempting to decipher the mechanism behind his abnormal growth.

Lynn didn't particularly mind.

As long as neither side discovered the copying system itself—

He remained safe.

From the outside perspective—

He merely appeared extraordinarily gifted.

Fast-learning.

Adaptive.

An explanation capable of concealing most inconsistencies.

He rolled slightly beneath the blanket.

Pulled it closer to his shoulders.

Shadow Raven had failed.

Fury was increasing surveillance.

Batman was continuing his investigation.

Three separate forces moving simultaneously around him.

And in the middle of it all—

Lynn remained lying quietly on a folding bed above a small clinic in Hell's Kitchen.

Eyes closed.

Breathing steady.

Heart rate:

Fifty-four.

One of the most dangerous men in the city looked indistinguishable from an ordinary young doctor asleep after work.

…

Fisk Tower.

3:00 p.m.

When James Wesley entered the office, Kingpin stood before the massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan.

His silhouette almost blocked the skyline entirely.

"Shadow Raven's condition has been confirmed," Wesley said quietly after closing the door.

"All six operatives survived."

"Grey Falcon sustained a comminuted fracture of the right elbow."

"Estimated recovery period: minimum six months."

"The remaining five suffered varying levels of trauma."

"Mildest injury: concussion."

Fisk did not turn around.

"What happened?"

"According to Grey Falcon's report…"

Wesley paused briefly.

"The target's physical capability greatly exceeded all prior intelligence estimates."

"Bladed weapons failed to penetrate the skin."

"Estimated striking force exceeded five hundred pounds."

"Combat skill approximated professional assassin level."

Another short pause.

"Grey Falcon's exact statement was—"

Wesley looked down briefly at the report.

"That wasn't a doctor."

"That was a monster wearing a white coat."

Fisk's finger tapped lightly against the glass window.

Slow.

Measured.

Then he finally spoke.

"Direct violence is no longer efficient."

"Yes," Wesley replied immediately.

"And that," Fisk said quietly, "changes the nature of the game entirely."
