Chapter 37 Two Geniuses Meet



During those twenty seconds inside the car, Tony Stark completed three actions.

First—

He used the vehicle's onboard systems to scan the electromagnetic environment surrounding Miracle Clinic.

Result:

Normal.

No detectable interception fields.

No active signal traps.

Second—

He activated the device on his wrist.

Outwardly—

A watch.

Internally—

A compact holographic interface linked to biometric monitoring systems.

Third—

He took a slow breath.

Then exited the car.

The clinic was smaller than expected.

White walls.

Recently upgraded equipment.

Clean enough to feel out of place in Hell's Kitchen.

A white coat hung behind the front desk.

Empty.

Lynn emerged from the examination room carrying several files.

Gold-rimmed glasses.

White coat.

Expression calm.

"Mr. Stark," Lynn said. "You're five minutes early."

Tony glanced around the clinic.

"This place is smaller than one of my walk-in closets."

"But my clinic saves lives," Lynn replied evenly.

"Your closet doesn't."

A slight gesture toward the chair.

"Please sit."

Tony sat.

Leg crossed.

Arms resting loosely.

Controlled posture.

Dominance signaling.

He didn't mention the real reason for his visit.

Not immediately.

"I looked into your background," Tony said.

"Community college dropout."

A pause.

"Then suddenly a perfect diagnostic record."

"You overturned hospital misdiagnoses without even having a completed degree."

"A degree doesn't guarantee competence," Lynn replied.

"And as far as public records indicate, you didn't attend many lectures at Massachusetts Institute of Technology either."

A slight twitch at the corner of Tony's mouth.

"Fine," he said.

"Let's test something."

He leaned forward slightly.

"The application of quantum tunneling in biomembrane transport."

"Specifically—the relationship between membrane potential, temperature, and tunneling probability for nanoscale drug molecules crossing a lipid bilayer under resting membrane conditions."

Three disciplines.

Quantum mechanics.

Biophysics.

Pharmacology.

Lynn adjusted his glasses.

"Resting membrane potential averages approximately negative seventy millivolts."

"At that voltage, effective lipid bilayer barrier energy is roughly 0.2 electron volts."

"The de Broglie wavelength for nanoscale molecular transport at physiological temperatures varies according to molecular mass—generally between 0.5 and 1.2 nanometers."

He paused briefly.

Mental calculation.

"Tunneling probability does not scale linearly with temperature."

"Temperature primarily alters molecular kinetic distribution rather than barrier geometry."

Tony lowered his legs.

"Second question."

His speech accelerated.

"Palladium ion kinetics in serum."

"Binding affinity with albumin."

"Metabolic half-life within the hepatic CYP450 system."

"Binding constant is approximately 10⁴ per mole," Lynn answered immediately.

"Weaker than copper or zinc complexes by roughly one order of magnitude."

"At low concentrations, metabolic half-life averages forty-two to forty-eight hours."

Then—

"If serum concentration exceeds roughly fifty micrograms per liter, CYP3A4 activity collapses below thirty percent baseline."

"At that stage, elimination slows dramatically."

"Palladium is no longer effectively metabolized."

"It accumulates."

Silence.

Then Lynn asked calmly:

"Mr. Stark, what is your current serum palladium concentration?"

Tony's expression shifted for the first time.

Very slightly.

He understood the implication immediately.

But he did not answer.

Instead—

He continued.

Third question.

Fourth.

Fifth.

Physics.

Chemistry.

Engineering.

Systems biology.

Every question deliberately interdisciplinary.

Every answer immediate.

No hesitation.

No visible strain.

After the eleventh question—

Tony stopped speaking.

Five seconds passed.

Then Lynn spoke instead.

"What is the thickness of the palladium-electrolyte interface layer inside your arc reactor?"

That changed everything.

Tony's posture tightened instantly.

Not because of the technical wording—

But because that information was classified.

Only a handful of people knew the reactor's exact structural configuration.

"How do you know there's an interface layer?" Tony asked quietly.

"All high-density energy systems require thermal isolation buffers between the core and containment shell," Lynn replied.

"That part is basic engineering."

A pause.

"But your buffer layer is flawed."

Tony stared at him.

"What flaw?"

"The interface layer thickness is approximately 0.3 to 0.5 micrometers."

"Sufficient in early-stage design."

"But palladium's thermal expansion coefficient differs from the electrolyte substrate by roughly 0.7 percent."

Lynn continued calmly.

"Short-term, the discrepancy is irrelevant."

"Long-term continuous operation changes that."

"Your thoracic cavity remains above normal body temperature."

"The reactor core operates significantly hotter."

"Repeated thermal cycling produces nanoscale fractures across the interface layer."

"Palladium ions leak through those fractures into the bloodstream."

Silence.

"That," Lynn said, "is the actual source of the poisoning."

The room became completely quiet.

Tony removed his sunglasses slowly.

No hostility.

No skepticism.

Recognition.

The expression produced when one exceptional mind encounters another.

"JARVIS spent three months identifying the leak layer," Tony said.

Voice lower than before.

"How did you infer thermal expansion mismatch from photographs?"

"I reviewed public images from the past six months."

"Skin tone variation."

"Weight-loss progression."

"Frequency shift from dominant-hand usage to compensatory left-hand movement."

Lynn leaned back slightly.

"From symptom progression, the mechanism becomes predictable."

"After excluding inhalation and direct industrial exposure, continuous micro-leakage from the reactor remained the only viable explanation."

Tony stared at him for several seconds.

Then exhaled once.

"Alright," he said quietly.

"You're definitely not a normal doctor."

He removed his right hand from his pocket and placed it on the table.

A slight tremor remained visible in the fingers.

"So tell me."

"How exactly are you planning to treat this?"

Lynn closed the examination room door.

Then drew the curtains shut.

"The treatment has two phases."

"Phase one—remove accumulated palladium toxicity from your body."

"This won't solve the underlying issue. The reactor remains the source."

"But it extends your survival window from approximately six months to at least two years."

"Enough time to solve the reactor problem properly."

Tony watched him steadily.

"And phase two?"
