MARVEL/DC: DOCTOR IN THE MULTIVERSE

Chapter 30 Four Golden Rules

"We don't have his level of precision… but based on the degradation pattern of the cyst wall, release is approximately between sixty-five and seventy-five percent."

Nick Fury narrowed his eye.

The number aligned.

Seventy-two percent.

A civilian doctor had produced, in seconds, what S.H.I.E.L.D.'s highest-resolution imaging required forty-five minutes to approximate.

"MF."

He rarely swore.

This qualified.

He turned toward the window.

One minute.

No interruption.

Then—

He faced the room again.

"Romanoff."

"Yes."

"Can it be removed?"

Natasha didn't answer immediately.

She looked to the technician.

The technician shook his head.

"Not recommended. The cyst is positioned adjacent to the lateral spinal cord and vertebral artery. Any invasive manipulation risks destabilizing the capsule wall."

"If it ruptures prematurely—"

He stopped.

No need to continue.

Full toxin release meant immediate, irreversible neurological collapse.

Silence followed.

"The doctor said he can do it," Natasha said.

The technician reacted instantly.

"A doctor in a street-level clinic? Even the best neurosurgical teams would not attempt this. The risk profile alone—"

"Enough."

Fury raised his hand.

The room quieted.

He looked back at the scan.

At the nearly invisible anomaly.

"Contact him," Fury said. "I want to speak to him directly."

9:47 p.m.

The landline at the clinic rang.

Lynn was upstairs, organizing medical inventory.

Before reaching the phone—

He analyzed the signal.

Background noise—

Not civilian.

High-frequency electromagnetic interference.

Layered encryption distortion.

Military-grade.

He went downstairs.

Picked up.

"Dr. Lynn."

The voice on the other end was controlled.

Measured.

Authority embedded in tone.

"This is Nick Fury. We need to talk."

Lynn leaned back in his chair.

Timing—

Accurate.

"Director Fury," he said calmly, "if you're scheduling an appointment, clinic hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. VIP consultations begin at one hundred thousand."

Silence.

Two seconds.

A short exhale.

Almost a laugh.

"Then we'll speak in person."

He disconnected.

Fury didn't arrive with a convoy.

He walked.

Alone—

On the surface.

Lynn detected him at approximately two hundred meters.

Male.

Mid-fifties.

Gait stable.

Energy distribution controlled.

Visible:

Trench coat.

Eyepatch.

Concealed:

.45 caliber sidearm under the coat.

Secondary compact firearm at the waist.

Extended scan—

Three hundred meters.

Rooftop.

One concealed heartbeat.

Sniper position.

Five hundred meters.

Van.

Two heartbeats.

Active electronics.

Communications and surveillance.

Not alone.

Never alone.

Lynn adjusted the clinic interior.

Not for presentation—

For concealment.

The ammunition crate—

Removed.

Modified ultrasound equipment—

Stored.

Vibranium fragment—

Secured.

Frank was absent.

His presence no longer required.

At exactly nine—

Fury entered.

First action—

Observation.

His gaze moved systematically.

Each object—

Half-second scan.

Spatial mapping.

Exit points.

Threat vectors.

"Cleaner than expected," Fury said.

"It's uncommon to find sterile environments in Hell's Kitchen," Lynn replied. "Please, sit."

Fury sat forward.

Not relaxed.

Engaged.

Hands together.

Negotiation posture.

"I'll be direct," Fury said.

"Your capability exceeds initial projections. Romanoff's report has been verified. Independent analysis confirms your conclusions."

Lynn nodded.

No response.

"I want you as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Chief Medical Advisor. Full-time."

The word carried weight.

Full-time meant control.

Integration.

Containment.

Lynn understood immediately.

"Director Fury," he said, "that isn't possible."

Fury's eye narrowed slightly.

"My clinic is operational. Patients depend on it. I won't shut it down."

"You treat dozens," Fury said. "We oversee individuals who affect global stability. You understand the difference."

"I do," Lynn replied. "Which is why I can't work under restriction."

"What you want is autonomy."

"What I want is efficiency."

Silence.

Brief.

Fury evaluated.

Lynn continued.

"I have four conditions."

"Proceed."

"First. The clinic remains independent. No formal affiliation with S.H.I.E.L.D.. My identity does not appear in your operational records."

Fury nodded.

"Accepted."

"Second. I choose my patients. No coercion. You may refer cases. I decide."

Fury watched him.

Two seconds.

"What circumstances would you refuse?"

"If the patient intends to harm me."

A slight shift in Fury's expression.

Not amusement.

Acknowledgment.

"Accepted."

"Third. Each treatment is compensated. Not limited to currency. Information, technology, or materials are acceptable. Terms determined per case."

Fury leaned back slightly.

"You want access to S.H.I.E.L.D. resources."

"Equivalent exchange."

Fury didn't interrupt.

He was listening.

Calculating.

Lynn continued—

Without pause.

"Fourth—"
