Chapter 854: Fighting to Survive
But how were they supposed to stop Captain Xu when they did not even have a vehicle?
What was even worse was that the rest of the ability users also ran away when they saw that Captain Xu had abandoned these people. Anyway, it was Captain Xu who had taken responsibility for these survivors; they had nothing to do with them. Why would they even bother to stay behind? They also turned their vehicles around and then drove away without looking at the tears of the survivors.
When the survivors saw that the ability users were leaving them one by one, they were filled with the kind of desperation that they had never felt till now. It was Captain Xu who told them to follow him. It would not be wrong to say that it was he who instigated them all to leave the safe base and promised them that he would take care of them like they were his family members. But now he left them all behind!
What were they going to do now?
"Bai Meiyue, open the door. We were wrong! Please open the door!"
"Bai Meiyue, help us, please. They have abandoned us."
"Wahhh!"
Bai Meiyue listened to the cries of the survivors and felt a headache. She knew that this was going to happen the very day these people left with Captain Xu. When she heard from Meng Suisui that these men had taken Meng Anzhi under their wings, she knew in her heart that they were not good people. Even when she tried to stop these people, they were filled with greed and refused to listen to her. Since they had chosen this path, they had to walk on it even if it felt hard.
"What are you going to do?" Xiao Wu asked while looking at the survivors who were causing chaos outside.
Bai Meiyue simply shook her head. "Leave them to their devices. There are enough safe zones around the safe base; with the new defence devices and the poison mist that is being scattered around the safe base, they will be fine. There is no need to worry about their safety. As for their food and water resources, you can ask the people inside the safe base if they need someone to hire. Just give them some odd tasks and pay them in resources."
No matter what, Bai Meiyue was not going to let these people enter the safe base even if they caused chaos.
They need to learn their lesson. It was not that she was hard-hearted; it was they who betrayed her first. They left her safe base because they ended up being fooled by the promises that Captain Xu made to them. If they could be fooled today, then they could be fooled tomorrow as well. What if she let them in after feeling sorry for what they were going through, and then they betrayed her again? Bai Meiyue could not withstand such a thing.
Even if she was strong, there was a limit to what she could take on.
Xiao Wu nodded and then asked Bai Meiyue to take some rest. Anyway, they had done whatever they could for these people. Whether or not they survived, it was up to them.
The survivors did not have the slightest bit of idea of what Bai Meiyue discussed with Xiao Wu, but when they saw her leave, they could not help but panic. What was going on? Why did Bai Meiyue leave? Could she not see their condition? They knew that they were wrong, but they were also fooled by Captain Xu!
"What should we do? What should we do? If Bai Meiyue doesn’t take us inside, then we can only wait for death!" one of the women could not help but burst into tears. She felt that Bai Meiyue was too harsh on them. In her heart, she believed that doing the skin business was much easier than doing the hard job that Bai Meiyue had given to the women, but it was only after following Captain Xu that she realised that doing skin business was even harsher.
The men did not respect her, and they even mocked her for eating soft rice. Compared to that, the woman felt that it was better to earn her keep by washing clothes.
However, it was too late for her to regret. Bai Meiyue had lost her faith in them, and she would never use them; it was clear from her stance alone.
"Should we leave?" One of the men asked.
"No!" Wang Fugui shook his head and then said to the rest of the people in the crowd. "This place is the safest for us. Look at the guards at the watch tower. As long as any zombies are seen in the nearby locations, these people will definitely hunt them down, and the mutated bugs are the same. We might as well stay here and make a place for us to stay."
They had tents and some basic survival kits. As long as they worked hard, they could make a small slum for themselves near the safe base. Wang Fugui could now see things clearly; there was no point in running away. They were common survivors and did not have much strength or ability; they could not even do anything for the safe bases. They were also poor and did not have anything useful to exchange with the authorities.
They could not go anywhere. Since that was the case, then why not stay where they were? With Bai Meiyue’s security, they wouldn’t have to worry about anything. What was more, Bai Meiyue had not chased them away, which proved that she had no intention of chasing them away. Since that was the case, then they might as well stay where they were. At least with Bai Meiyue by their side, they could survive without worrying about when a zombie would kill them.
"But what about food and water?"
"Use what we have for time being and as for the rest...we will think of a way." Since they had been abandoned, they had no other choice but to find a way to survive!
