Red pulse

Chapter 50: Red Pulse

The station trembled.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

The Resonator’s bronze rings spun faster than ever before.

The crimson countdown reached its final seconds.

00:00:10

Nobody spoke.

Helix soldiers lowered their rifles.

Even they understood.

This moment was bigger than all of them.

00:00:09

Rasheed looked down at his father’s wristwatch.

The cracked glass reflected the crimson light.

David’s smile.

His promise.

His sacrifice.

Everything had led here.

00:00:08

Across the Bridge…

David stood alone.

The wind pulled at his torn coat.

His eyes never left the distant light that connected him to Earth.

Then…

He smiled.

“My boy…”

“You actually made it.”

Behind him…

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Patient.

The unseen figure continued walking through the crimson mist.

Never rushing.

Never stopping.

David didn’t look back.

“I won’t let you reach him.”

00:00:07

Back in the station…

The Pulse Core pulsed against Rasheed’s chest.

Not demanding.

Waiting.

Choosing.

Omar stepped beside him.

“If you’re asking me whether I’d save my father…”

He paused.

“I can’t answer that.”

“But I know one thing.”

Rasheed looked at him.

“You don’t have to carry this alone.”

For the first time since receiving his powers…

Rasheed believed him.

00:00:06

Elias removed his glasses.

His eyes were wet.

“I failed your father once.”

“I won’t fail his son.”

He quietly stepped beside Rasheed.

Mr. Vale smiled faintly.

“So…”

“The old man finally picked a side.”

Elias looked at him.

“I picked it twenty years ago.”

00:00:05

Dr. Sato walked past the Helix soldiers.

The Director watched silently.

“Doctor.”

“If you cross that line…”

She smiled sadly.

“I already crossed it twenty years ago.”

She stood beside Rasheed.

The Director closed his eyes.

Then…

To everyone’s surprise…

He gave a single order.

“Stand down.”

Every Helix weapon lowered.

No one argued.

“There will be no battle here.”

The Director looked directly at Rasheed.

“If humanity survives tonight…”

“It won’t be because we fired first.”

00:00:04

The Resonator’s center opened.

A bridge of crimson light stretched into the darkness.

Not fully formed.

Just enough.

A choice.

Not an invitation.

David could see it.

Earth.

For the first time in twenty years.

He took one step forward.

Then stopped.

His son’s voice echoed across the bridge.

“Dad!”

David closed his eyes.

The sound broke him.

He had imagined hearing that voice a thousand times.

None compared to the real thing.

“No…”

David whispered.

“You’ve grown up.”

00:00:03

The hidden figure finally emerged from the crimson mist.

Still faceless.

Still silent.

It stopped only a few steps behind David.

Watching.

Waiting.

David turned slightly.

“You’re too late.”

The figure didn’t answer.

It simply smiled.

00:00:02

Rasheed stepped toward the Resonator.

Everyone held their breath.

He could bring David home.

Or…

He could honor the choice David had already made.

His hand hovered above the Pulse Core.

Then…

He remembered.

Not the laboratory.

Not the explosion.

Not the Bridge.

A little girl.

Standing in the rain.

Looking up at him after he had saved her.

Her tiny voice.

“You move so fast…”

“…you’re like a red pulse.”

That was the first time anyone had called him that.

Not because of his power.

Because of what he had done with it.

Rasheed smiled.

Tears filled his eyes.

“I finally understand.”

00:00:01

He looked through the bridge.

Straight into his father’s eyes.

“I love you.”

David smiled.

“I know.”

The countdown reached—

00:00:00

Rasheed placed his hand on the Resonator.

Not to open it.

To close it.

The Pulse Core erupted with brilliant crimson light.

The bridge began collapsing.

David never moved.

He simply raised one hand.

A silent goodbye.

Then the light swallowed him.

The unseen figure vanished with the storm.

The connection was gone.

Silence.

Complete silence.

The Resonator stopped.

Its bronze rings became still.

The crimson glow disappeared.

The station felt…

Ordinary.

Rasheed fell to his knees.

For the first time since his father disappeared…

He cried.

Not because he had lost him.

Because…

He had chosen to let him go.

No one interrupted.

Not Omar.

Not Elias.

Not Mr. Vale.

Not even the Director.

Some grief deserved witnesses.

Not words.

Outside…

The first rays of morning broke over the city.

The crimson clouds were gone.

People stepped out of their homes.

Completely unaware that the world had almost changed forever.

Mr. Vale quietly picked up the broken bronze compass.

It no longer pointed anywhere.

He slipped it into his coat.

Then looked toward the sunrise.

“The game has changed.”

And for the first time…

He smiled.

Not because he had won.

Because the right person had made the impossible choice.

Far beyond sight…

Within the endless Chronal Zone…

David stood once more before the fading bridge.

He smiled into the silence.

“My son…”

“…you became the hero I hoped the world would need.”

He turned away from Earth.

And walked back into the crimson horizon.

Not defeated.

Resolute.
