Chapter 37: The Day Time Broke

————

Rain fell softly against the bookstore windows.

The Librarian stood in silence.

His eyes never left the fire burning inside the old fireplace.

“You asked what happened.”

Rasheed nodded.

The old man sighed.

“I’ve spent twenty years hoping I’d never have to answer that.”

⸻

He walked toward a shelf hidden behind hundreds of dusty books.

From it, he removed a worn leather journal.

Its cover bore only two words.

PROJECT CHRONA

He placed it gently on the table.

“I won’t let you read it.”

Rasheed frowned.

“Then why show it to me?”

“Because history…”

“…isn’t just facts.”

“It’s scars.”

⸻

The Librarian opened the journal.

Inside…

A faded photograph rested between its pages.

Three young scientists smiled at the camera.

David Adewale.

The Librarian.

And the third scientist.

His face had been scratched away.

Not burned.

Scratched.

Deliberately.

By hand.

⸻

“It wasn’t always like this.”

The Librarian’s voice had become distant.

“He was brilliant.”

“Braver than all of us.”

“He believed time wasn’t something to observe…”

“…but something humanity could heal.”

Rasheed listened quietly.

“He wanted to erase wars.”

“Prevent disasters.”

“Save everyone.”

The old man smiled sadly.

“David warned him.”

“What did he say?”

“’If you try to control time…”

“…time will eventually control you.’”

⸻

The laboratory vision returned to Rasheed’s mind.

The alarms.

The explosion.

The crimson light.

“The experiment failed.”

“No.”

The Librarian looked directly at him.

“It succeeded.”

Rasheed froze.

“What?”

“The machine worked.”

“For exactly…”

“…four seconds.”

Silence.

“In those four seconds…”

“…the Chronal Zone touched our world.”

⸻

The room felt colder.

“What happened next?”

The Librarian closed the journal.

“We lost everything.”

“The laboratory.”

“Our research.”

“Our friend.”

“And David.”

“He disappeared.”

“He chose to.”

Rasheed’s heart skipped.

“What do you mean?”

“He stayed behind.”

⸻

Far away…

Within the endless crimson storm…

David continued walking.

His boots left glowing footprints across fractured time.

He stopped beside the remains of a collapsed bridge floating in empty space.

Someone else had been there recently.

Fresh footprints.

Not his.

He knelt.

Touched one.

Still warm with Chronal energy.

“They’re getting closer.”

⸻

Back in the bookstore…

“The government erased Project Chrona.”

The Librarian continued.

“Helix acquired what remained.”

“They promised to protect it.”

Rasheed looked away.

“And instead…”

“They built weapons.”

The old man didn’t answer.

His silence answered enough.

⸻

Across the city…

Omar couldn’t sleep.

The vision from the tunnel replayed over and over.

The laboratory.

The explosion.

The scientist shouting—

“Close the gate!”

He had seen it too.

So why?

Why him?

A knock came at his apartment door.

Dr. Sato entered carrying two cups of coffee.

“You saw something.”

Omar looked up.

“How did you know?”

“Because your heart rate hasn’t returned to normal.”

He hesitated.

“There was a man.”

“In the memory.”

“He looked…”

“…familiar.”

⸻

Elsewhere…

Mr. Vale unlocked the bronze compass.

For the first time…

He removed it from its case.

The needle spun violently.

Then stopped.

Not toward another Vault.

Toward one person.

He looked out over the city skyline.

“So…”

“You’ve begun remembering.”

He slipped the compass into his coat.

“The game changes now.”

⸻

Late that night…

Rasheed returned to his workshop.

He couldn’t sleep either.

He replayed every word the Librarian had spoken.

Then…

His eyes drifted toward the Pulse Core.

It glowed faintly inside its container.

Almost…

As if responding to his thoughts.

He reached toward it—

Then stopped.

His father’s last words echoed in his mind.

“Not yet.”

Rasheed slowly withdrew his hand.

“I’m not taking shortcuts.”

He smiled to himself.

“When I wear the real suit…”

“…I’ll earn it.”

Outside…

A streak of crimson lightning flashed across the clouds.

No thunder followed.

Only silence.

As though the sky itself…

Was listening.
