Chapter 27: Different Heroes

The warehouse lights died.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Only the silver glow of the Chrona fragments remained.

One by one…

The recruits stood.

Their eyes reflected the crystal light.

Some trembled.

Some smiled.

Others looked terrified.

The man in the black coat spread his arms.

“Our guest believes he’s here to save you.”

His calm voice echoed through the building.

“But tell me…”

He picked up another fragment.

“…who saved you before tonight?”

Silence.

“You lost your jobs.”

Silence.

“You begged for help.”

Silence.

“The city forgot your names.”

He looked toward the broken window.

“And now…”

“…the city sends one boy.”

Rasheed’s jaw tightened.

The man wasn’t entirely wrong.

The city had failed these people.

That was what made him dangerous.

He mixed truth with manipulation.

⸻

Suddenly—

A young recruit charged toward the broken window.

Crystal veins spread across his arm.

“I’ll stop him!”

Before Rasheed could react—

A flash of blue lightning crashed through the warehouse roof.

BOOM!

Steel beams shook.

Concrete dust filled the air.

A blue streak intercepted the young recruit before he reached the window.

The crystal-enhanced punch struck empty air.

The recruit spun in confusion.

A calm voice echoed through the darkness.

“Everyone stay where you are.”

Blue electricity illuminated the room.

Velocyte stood between the recruits and the exit.

His visor concealed his face.

His posture was steady.

Professional.

The black-coated man smiled.

“So…”

“They sent two.”

⸻

Rasheed remained hidden outside.

“Who is that?”

The newcomer moved with impossible precision.

Not wild speed.

Controlled speed.

Every step looked practiced.

Like he’d trained for years.

Velocyte’s eyes scanned the room.

Twenty-three civilians.

Seven armed smugglers.

One unidentified leader.

No visible hostages.

He spoke into his communicator.

“Helix Command, I’ve located the distribution site.”

Static.

Then the Director’s voice.

“Proceed with containment.”

“Understood.”

Rasheed’s eyes narrowed.

Helix.

So that’s who he worked for.

⸻

The recruits began panicking.

One woman cried out,

“They said we’d finally have power!”

A man beside her shouted,

“I don’t want to go back!”

Crystal energy erupted across the room.

One fragment overloaded.

Then another.

Within seconds, chaos exploded.

People ran in every direction.

Some attacked smugglers.

Others attacked each other.

Fear spread faster than the crystals.

Velocyte reacted instantly.

Blue lightning filled the warehouse.

He disarmed three smugglers before they could draw their weapons.

He caught a collapsing support beam with one hand.

Then shoved civilians out of its path.

Efficient.

Fast.

Clinical.

Outside, Rasheed watched.

“He’s saving them…”

Just differently.

⸻

Then everything went wrong.

A frightened teenager stumbled backward into one of the crates.

It tipped over.

Dozens of Chrona fragments spilled across the floor.

Every crystal began glowing.

Rasheed’s eyes widened.

“No…”

His father’s notebook flashed through his mind.

Never allow raw fragments to resonate together.

Too late.

The fragments synchronized.

The warehouse shook violently.

Cracks spread through the concrete floor.

Velocyte looked down.

“What is—”

The black-coated man smiled.

Then quietly walked away.

He wasn’t escaping.

He had planned this.

⸻

The floor exploded.

Silver energy burst upward like a geyser.

The shockwave ripped through the building.

Both speedsters moved at the exact same instant.

Red.

Blue.

Rasheed caught three children before falling debris crushed them.

Velocyte evacuated two unconscious workers and a wounded smuggler.

Neither looked at the other.

Neither cared.

Right now…

Only one thing mattered.

Saving lives.

⸻

Outside, the warehouse collapsed into itself.

Steel screamed.

Concrete folded inward.

A cloud of dust rolled across the railway yard.

Sirens echoed in the distance.

When the dust settled…

Nearly everyone had survived.

Thanks to two streaks of lightning.

The black-coated man watched from the roof of a distant water tower.

He smiled as firefighters arrived.

“They’re exactly as the files described.”

One of his lieutenants approached.

“We lost the shipment.”

“No.”

The man adjusted his gloves.

“We invested in information.”

He looked toward the red and blue streaks disappearing in opposite directions.

“Now we know how they think.”

⸻

Later that night…

Helix Dynamics.

The Director replayed drone footage.

Frame by frame.

Red Pulse rescued the children first.

Velocyte stabilized the structure first.

Different instincts.

Different priorities.

Dr. Sato folded her arms.

“They complement each other.”

The Director nodded slowly.

“Which means…”

“If they ever become allies…”

“They’ll be nearly impossible to stop.”

Silence filled the room.

Then the Director issued a quiet order.

“Ensure they never trust one another.”

⸻

Across the city…

The Librarian closed his bookstore for the evening.

Without looking up from his book, he spoke.

“You can come out now.”

A figure stepped from the shadows.

It was Elias.

“You’ve been watching.”

“I always watch.”

Elias looked toward the city skyline.

“They met.”

“They did.”

“And?”

The Librarian smiled faintly.

“They chose people…”

“…instead of victory.”

For the first time in decades…

He allowed himself hope.

“Perhaps…”

“…history doesn’t have to repeat itself.”

Far beyond the city…

Inside the crimson skies of the Chronal Zone…

Dr. David Adewale suddenly stopped walking.

He looked upward.

As though he had heard those words.

Then, for the first time in twenty years…

A faint crimson path appeared across the endless void.

Someone…

Or something…

Had opened a way.
