Chapter 324-The Stay That Didn’t Last.
Verity:
He stood in front of me as if he hadn’t done anything wrong.
"That’s not true, Verity. If Gigi is important to me, then you’re even more important."
The way he said those words would have made anyone else in my place happy immediately.
But I knew the truth.
He could say whatever he wanted, but the fact remained that he had checked on Gigi first.
Only afterward had he thought of me.
I slowly traced my finger around the rim of the glass and gave him a faint smile.
It was sarcastic, filled with disbelief. I didn’t believe a word he was saying.
"That’s why you were with her the night before. You were with her during the disaster, and even afterward, she was still the first person you asked about."
When I finally lifted my head after saying all of that, Theodore looked as though he had never realized it himself.
"Gigi is a very good friend of mine, Verity. We’re really close. It’s like..."
Before he could say any more nonsense, he caught the look on my face and shut his mouth.
He understood that I wasn’t interested in hearing his excuses.
"Then go tell all of this to Gigi. I’m sure she’ll love hearing it," I replied sarcastically before pointing toward the door. "I’d like to rest too."
Theodore planted his hands on his waist, then tilted his head all the way back.
"What do you want me to do?" he asked, stepping toward me.
I immediately backed away.
This time, however, he didn’t stop.
My back eventually touched the wall, and Theodore closed the remaining distance between us.
He placed both hands against the wall on either side of me, caging me between his arms, then lowered himself closer to my height.
"Tell me. What do you want me to do?" he asked softly, bringing his face closer to mine.
"I don’t want anything," I replied. "I just want peace."
"And you don’t want me?" he asked in a quiet, gentle voice.
The hair on the back of my neck rose.
When I lifted my eyes, I realized just how close he was.
He was incredibly handsome. Looking at him was enough to make my heart skip a beat.
"If you want me to spend less time with Gigi, I’m willing to do that."
Another jolt went through my heart.
"And I’m not just saying it. I’ll show you. I’ll prove to you that you’re important to me. More important than anyone else."
As he spoke, he leaned an inch closer and pressed his lips against my cheek.
He didn’t pull away.
For a moment, we simply stayed there, breathing.
Then, finally, he gave my cheek one last soft kiss before drawing his lips away.
He finally pulled back.
Then he turned around and looked at me.
"Thank you for saving Jenna’s dignity," he said before walking out of the room.
That was the thing about them.
The moment it involved a girl from their own family, they became incredibly emotional.
Maybe that was exactly what had happened with Gigi too.
When they first found out what had happened to her, they had reacted with so much aggression.
But that wasn’t their only crime.
Deep down, they probably knew what else they had done.
What they didn’t know was that I had come here for revenge.
I lay down on my bed and eventually fell asleep.
When I woke up, I found several missed calls from Gigi.
It almost seemed as if she had been waiting for me to wake up.
But I had absolutely no desire to speak to her.
When I finally stepped out of my room, dressed in black pants and a black shirt, I noticed that the living room was almost full.
Jenna sat on the sofa while the Alpha King brothers stood around her.
Her mother was behind her, but her father was nowhere to be seen.
Lately, he barely left his room.
And that worried me.
I was afraid he might somehow destroy whatever confidence Jenna had left.
The only reason he hadn’t said anything to her yet was Ragnar.
Ragnar had made it very clear to everyone that none of this was Jenna’s fault and that no one was allowed to blame her for what had happened.
I could understand that, as a parent, her father was probably dealing with all kinds of emotions.
I just hoped none of those emotions had turned into blame toward Jenna.
"I’ve decided that after my mate ball, I’m leaving this pack," Jenna announced. "Grandma, my parents, and I will return to our own pack and stay there."
Her mother immediately began nodding.
Even Grandma nodded in agreement.
I couldn’t blame Jenna.
Her time here had been ruined by Gigi and her brother.
If she stayed in this pack any longer, she would only be surrounded by grief.
Everywhere she looked, something would remind her of what had happened and all the pain she had endured.
I couldn’t blame her for wanting to leave.
The pack where she lived gave them respect because of their relation to Ragnar.
Ragnar might not have said anything, but I noticed the guilt written all over his face.
He looked as though he had taken Jenna’s decision personally.
Then again, the same thing had happened when it came to Justin.
Ragnar had said there had been proof against Justin too.
Oliver’s evidence had eventually been exposed for the entire world to see, but what exactly had they had against Justin?
What had Gigi shown them?
What had convinced them that Justin truly was an abuser?
"Whatever you decide, the pack you’re going to leave for has already been informed about your admission. You’ll get into one of the best colleges there, and you can come back whenever you want," Ragnar said calmly.
Jenna looked at him before lowering her head.
"This time, you didn’t even have to get rid of us. We’re leaving on our own."
There was sadness in lady Lucille’s words, but I only saw that same sadness reflected on Jaguar’s and Theodore’s faces.
Ragnar seemed strangely cold, as though what she was saying didn’t affect him at all.
I was still watching them when I suddenly got the feeling that someone was staring at me from a distance.
I turned my head and spotted Gigi standing near one of the big pillers, far enough away from everyone else.
She looked as though she had been waiting for me to notice her.
The moment our eyes met, she motioned for me to come over with her fingers.
I knew then that I had no way out of it.
I was going to have to talk to her.
