Chapter 272-The Cruel Family
Verity:
Flashback:
"Stay here," Tim ordered when I tried to enter the emergency room with my brother.
"Will he be okay?" I asked, my palms pressed together while my body shook.
"With a dick that tiny, I’m not sure," Max commented while passing by.
That nurse and warrior were really messy.
I was so shaken and hurt that I could not even defend my brother in that moment.
And then it all hit me at once. What they were saying was horrible, but I knew where it was coming from.
Those videos.
"Prepare the money because the bills aren’t going to be cheap. And don’t cry for a man like that. He put you through so much shame and then tried to end his life, leaving the burden on you," Tim said, rolling his eyes.
He was still flossing whatever was stuck in his teeth before someone called him away for assistance.
"He was a good brother. He did not bring me shame. He did a lot for me," I argued in a meek voice, tears streaming down my face.
"And whatever you’re saying about him is just rude."
"Oh really?" he scoffed, placing his hands on his hips.
"Then he should have found a better way to die. Not flop around like a sloppy fish."
My jaw dropped.
If anyone else from my place had been there, they would have taught these people a lesson. But I could not.
I had to bite my tongue so they would keep helping my brother.
"Don’t waste your time on this fat one," Max said as she walked past us.
"She probably gave him stress too. I wonder how much he had to feed her. Maybe that’s why he worked so many jobs. He couldn’t fill her stomach."
Tim followed after her, laughing.
They never cared about anyone’s emotions.
My tears meant nothing to them. To them, they were just a mockery or an annoying sound.
In that moment, I called Julia because I had no idea what to do next.
She arrived within a few minutes, and I finally felt a little less alone.
"Where are you going?" she asked when she noticed I was already putting a bag over my shoulder, ready to leave again.
"I have to go and get the money. They won’t treat him until I have it. I have to pay the full bill," I said, looking at her with tired eyes.
"But where are you gonna get the money from?" she questioned.
I shrugged, having no clue what to say to her.
"I think I’ll ask around," I uttered.
Julia watched me with tears in her eyes.
I reached over and held her hand.
"Please keep an eye on him for me," I said, not even knowing what I meant.
There was nothing she could do.
Was I afraid somebody was gonna come over and finish the job? End his misery and kill my hopes?
"I’ll take care of him," Julia commented, giving my hand a firm squeeze.
Then I left the hospital.
However, once I was outside, I had practically nowhere to go. I didn’t know where to turn for help.
The first thing I did was get inside the phone booth and call my mother. I knew her number by heart, so even though my phone was dead, I knew how to reach her.
"Hello?"
The minute someone answered, I immediately started speaking.
"Mom, I need your help. Justin—" I paused, closing my eyes. "Justin is in critical condition. But you don’t need to worry. I just need you to lend me some money."
I was still talking when I heard a grumbling voice on the other end.
"You had the nerve to call here!"
It was my stepsister.
Her words hung in the air, and I didn’t even know how to respond.
"You’re so shameless. Go take care of yourself. Don’t ever call my mother again," she yelled into the phone before hanging up.
At this point, there was no point in calling again because I knew she would be sitting by the phone.
The sad part was that I wasn’t allowed to have their personal phone numbers, only the house landline.
So, I stepped out of the phone booth, looking around until one name popped into my head.
Maybe if I went over to Gigi’s place, I could ask her parents to lend me some money.
I mean, they knew me and Justin. They wouldn’t be so heartless as to refuse to help us.
Their daughter had done my brother dirty. They would help, right?
When I arrived at their mansion, the guard let me in almost instantly.
It was pretty obvious why, because they knew me.
I had come and gone from their place quite literally many times, so this wasn’t my first time there.
However, this time, the guard looked at me like I shouldn’t even exist.
So I could already tell they had heard about my brother’s breakup with Gigi.
I just didn’t understand where the rumors were coming from that my brother had been abusive toward her.
The guard made me sit in the living room, and I waited until Gigi’s mother came out wearing a beautiful white silk night robe.
Even when they slept, these people looked perfect.
Stella Hill was not particularly a bad woman. She was a little too critical of me.
Whenever she saw me, she would talk about my weight and ask why I wasn’t losing it.
It was possibly just because she thought her daughter was perfect.
I mean, body-shaming was bad, but she wasn’t the worst, considering how awful Gigi’s brother was.
So I was glad it was Stella Hill who had come out.
"What is it?" she asked me, her arms folded over her chest.
"My brother is in the hospital. He’s dying, and they’re asking for money," I said.
She narrowed her eyes at me like she was in disbelief.
"Yeah, his condition is really bad."
I thought that was why she was shocked, so I started explaining my brother’s condition further.
But she waved her hand and shook a finger at me, silencing me.
"And you had the nerve to come here to ask for help for the man who abused and raped my daughter?" the woman yelled, causing my eyes to widen.
My reaction was almost instant.
