Chapter 256 - 245: Can I Not Go? (Part 1)
During the initial discussions with the other company’s designers, the agreement was for each side to produce two proposals, with the final design to be based on these four plans.
The proposals from their company were written by Titus Everett and Gordon Grant, two men who had both been there for a decade.
And now, Seth Shields was asking her to write a proposal too—an undeniable vote of confidence.
Georgia stood up, excited. "I’ll definitely do my best!"
"You can go now."
"Thank you, Team Leader Shields, for giving me this chance!"
Georgia excitedly left the office and sat down at her desk, suddenly feeling hopeful about everything.
Yvonne Chandler, who sat in front of her, turned around. "Georgia, did something good happen? You look so happy!"
Georgia shook her head and smiled. "I do?"
Yvonne nodded emphatically. "I’ve never seen you this happy before!"
Seth Shields asking her to write a proposal was certainly something to be happy about, but Georgia’s excitement quickly faded.
She had originally wanted to withdraw from this collaboration. However, by agreeing to Seth Shields’ request to write a proposal, she realized it meant she would have to work at Elliot Sheridan’s company.
Georgia agonized over it until the end of the workday but couldn’t reach a decision.
Back in her apartment, she sat before her easel and pondered for over an hour before finally making a decision.
The proposal was due the day after tomorrow, which was a very tight deadline.
That evening, after dinner, just as Byron Shaw was about to say a few words to her, Georgia hurriedly rushed into her room.
Byron Shaw sighed. ’I wonder what she’s been so busy with lately.’
Georgia worked until midnight before finally putting her things away to sleep.
Georgia worked on the proposal for two straight all-nighters, and the dark circles under her eyes grew even darker.
When she ran into Byron Shaw the next morning, she greeted him, "Morning!"
Byron Shaw was packing his luggage. "I’m going on a business trip for a week. Will you be alright here by yourself?"
"I’m not a child anymore. Of course I will be!" Georgia said with a small laugh.
"Call me if anything happens."
"Got it!"
Georgia gave a hurried reply before heading into the bathroom to wash up. She still had to go to the office later to submit her proposal.
Grace Wagner was driving Byron Shaw to the airport. "Attorney Shaw, if we don’t get going, you’ll be late!"
Sitting in the car, Byron Shaw slowly tapped his fingers on his knee. He glanced down at his watch. "No rush."
Grace Wagner couldn’t figure out what Byron Shaw was thinking, so she could only wait patiently.
A few minutes later, Georgia Thorne emerged from the apartment building with her bag, and Grace finally understood.
Byron Shaw had already opened the car door and called out to Georgia, "Georgia, I’ll give you a ride to the office!"
Georgia, who had been worried she was running late, hastily got into the car, clutching her documents. "Thanks!"
"Let’s go."
Fifteen minutes later, the car stopped in front of the company building.
As she was about to get out of the car, Byron Shaw spoke up. "Remember, call me if anything happens."
Georgia nodded and ran into the building.
In the conference room, Titus Everett and Gordon Grant finished presenting their respective proposals, assuming that would be the end of it.
But when Seth Shields asked Georgia Thorne to present her proposal, everyone else was surprised.
Georgia took out the proposal she had meticulously prepared. "Now, I will explain my ideas to everyone."
There were seven people in their team. Other than Wendy Young, who had joined the company a little before her, everyone else had been there for two or three years or more.
Everyone was utterly astonished that Seth Shields had given such a huge opportunity to Georgia.
After her explanation, everyone was even more astounded. No one expected Georgia to take such an unconventional approach, coming up with a novel idea that none of them present had considered.
Seth Shields was smiling with satisfaction the entire time. He placed the three proposals on the table. "Same as always, we’ll vote."
Seth Shields was a fair man and liked to use a voting system to make the final decision.
Although Titus Everett and Gordon Grant admired Georgia’s ability to come up with such an idea in such a short time, they were still partial to their own work and each cast a vote for themselves.
The remaining voters compared the three proposals, each lost in their own thoughts.
It seemed they needed to think it over carefully before they could decide who to vote for.
While everyone was silent, Seth Shields suddenly spoke up. "I cast my vote for Georgia."
Seth Shields’ vote seemed to set the direction, and Wendy Young followed suit, also casting her vote for Georgia.
Wendy Young clapped Georgia’s shoulder heartily. "We’re both girls, so I support you! You have my vote!"
The remaining two, Gabriel Halloway and Gregory Griffin, looked at the three proposals, still undecided.
Wendy Young gave Gabriel Halloway a hard shove. "You two big men, how are you even slower than me!"
After careful examination, Gabriel Halloway and Gregory Griffin cast their votes: one for Georgia and one for Titus Everett.
Georgia now had three votes. Now, all eyes fell on her.
Georgia said calmly, "I vote for Senior Everett."
And with that, the result was a tie: Georgia and Titus Everett each had three votes, while Gordon Grant had one.
Seth Shields seemed quite satisfied with this result. He gathered the proposals and dismissed the meeting.
After the meeting, Georgia hurried to catch up with Gordon Grant. "Mr. Grant, I’m sorry."
Gordon Grant was a middle-aged man who had long since learned to take wins and losses in stride.
He admired Georgia and replied, "What’s there to be sorry about? We’re all still on the same team. Just keep working hard and make sure this project is a success."
Georgia nodded emphatically and broke into a happy smile.
In the afternoon, they went to Elliot Sheridan’s company, where both sides presented their proposals and held a brief meeting.
The other company’s two designers, Kai and Shane Chase, were both designers of some renown.
Kai, in particular, had recently returned from studying abroad in Breccon and had previously won a design award there.
After the introductions, Georgia learned she would be assigned to the same office as them and was to report there next week.
Over the weekend, Georgia was cooped up in her apartment when Nancy Hughes called and asked her to hang out.
Nancy worked at Elliot Sheridan’s company and had excitedly called after seeing Georgia’s name on the list for the collaboration with Archetype Company the day before.
Thinking she hadn’t relaxed in a long time, Georgia agreed.
However, when she arrived at the meeting spot, she found that besides Nancy Hughes, Selena Sheridan was also there.
Seeing Georgia walk in, Nancy waved energetically. "Over here!"
Georgia’s steps faltered. She hesitated for a second before quickly walking over and sitting down.
"Georgia, why haven’t you been answering my calls lately!" Selena Sheridan was happy to see her, too.
Lately, for some reason, her calls to Georgia had gone unanswered. When she asked Elliot Sheridan, she couldn’t get any information out of him either.
Georgia laughed unnaturally. "I’ve just been busy with work lately."
Selena knew she had started at a new company and grumbled, "Even if you’re busy, you couldn’t even return one call? And here I was, eagerly waiting to hear from you!"
’It made me think I’d done something wrong again!’
"It’s definitely busy when you first start at a company. When I was just starting my internship, wasn’t I dead tired too?" Nancy Hughes said, speaking from experience. "Newcomers are under a lot of pressure. It’ll get easier after a while!"
Georgia took a sip of her coffee as Nancy continued, "Oh, right. Are you coming to work at our company next week?"
"Yeah."
"That’s great! We can have lunch together then!"
"Wait, what’s going on?" Selena Sheridan looked at them, confused.
"Oh, it’s a collaborative project. Georgia has to come work at our company until it’s over."
"Just for a month," Georgia said.
Selena’s face lit up with understanding. "Oh, so Georgia, you’ll be commuting to and from work with my second uncle? Wow, that’s so romantic!"
"..."
This was exactly why Georgia had been avoiding Selena’s calls and didn’t want to see her. She was afraid of hearing anything about that man from Selena’s lips.
Very few people knew about Georgia’s miscarriage, including Nancy Hughes and Selena Sheridan, who were sitting right in front of her.
They still thought Georgia and Elliot Sheridan were living happily together.
The three friends chatted together, and from time to time, Georgia had to listen as the other two teased her about Elliot Sheridan, forcing an unnatural smile.
After a while, Selena Sheridan received a call from Sharon Ennis.
"Oh no, my little uncle fainted again! I have to get to the hospital!"
"Then you should hurry and go. Georgia and I will be fine here."
With that, Selena Sheridan rushed out, hailed a taxi, and left.
It took Nancy Hughes a moment to process. "Wait a minute, since when did she have a ’little uncle’?"
Georgia looked down, her heart heavy, and said nothing.
Nancy and Georgia sat for a little while longer before they both went their separate ways.
"By the way, Dylan Heston suggested a trip to the ancient town. Are you and Elliot interested?"
"We’ll see. I’ve been pretty busy lately."
Nancy thought about the project Georgia was working on and considered for a moment. "Well, we’ll be at the same company next week anyway, so we can talk about it anytime!"
Meanwhile, Selena Sheridan rushed to the hospital to find Sharon Ennis waiting outside the operating room.
"Grandma, don’t worry. Little Uncle will be okay."
Sharon Ennis sighed. "God willing."
Aidan Sheridan had been in a coma for so long that she, an old woman, had almost forgotten. She had never really expected him to wake up.
But now that he was awake, it was just another form of torture for Aidan. If they couldn’t find a matching kidney donor soon, he probably wouldn’t be able to hold on for much longer.
Aidan had been conscious for a long time now, and his body was slowly recovering, but he was still ill, exuding an air of frailty.
After a surgery that lasted more than six hours, Aidan Sheridan was wheeled out of the operating room, his face as pale as a corpse.
William took off his mask. "Don’t worry. For now, he’s out of danger."
Sharon Ennis clutched her chest, the words acting like a tranquilizer. She nervously grabbed William’s hand. "William, Aidan is counting on you!"
William broke into a smile. "Listen to you. Don’t you trust me?"
William had once studied medicine abroad. His hands were hailed as "Magic Hands," capable of bringing the dying back to life. No surgery he performed had ever failed.
In this field, you’d never find another one like him.
However, as skilled as he was, he wasn’t God. He couldn’t save someone whose life was hanging by a thread.
