A deep clunk echoed through the chamber.

We both froze.

Another clunk.

Then a grinding rumble.

Then the unmistakable sound of ancient gears turning for the first time in centuries.

Carlie grabbed my arm. "Zora... what is that?"

I didn't answer.

Because the sound wasn't just mechanical.

It was alive.

Magic humming through metal, waking something that had slept far longer than it should have.

The elder stepped forward, eyes widening, breath catching.

"Oh..." he whispered. "Oh, by the stars..."

The vault door, a slab of stone thicker than a castle wall shuddered.

Dust rained down from the ceiling.

The floor vibrated beneath our feet.

The runes carved into the door flared with golden light.

Carlie's grip tightened. "Zora—"

The elder raised a hand, reverent.

"Do not speak."

The gears roared, grinding, shifting, unlocking.

CLUNK.

RURURU.

CLUNK.

The sound was deafening.

WHOOSH.

A rush of air blasted out from the seams of the door, carrying centuries of dust and the cold breath of forgotten magic. Carlie shielded her face. I stood still, letting the wind wash over me, feeling it tug at my hair and clothes like the vault itself was exhaling.

The elder stepped closer, trembling.

"This vault..." he whispered, voice cracking with awe, "has not been opened since the reign of the first Nightbearer queen."

Isolde Raythorne.

The door groaned, splitting down the center, stone sliding back inch by inch. Light spilled ouT warm, golden, and shimmering like sunlight trapped underground for centuries.

Carlie lowered her arms, eyes wide.

"Oh my god..."

The elder's voice shook.

"Nightbearer... behold your inheritance."

The doors finished opening with a final, thunderous boom, and the treasury revealed

"Impossible..." I said dumbstruck.

I couldn't think about anything else.

Only this.

Only the impossible wealth and history stretching out before me.

Carlie whispered, stunned, "Zora... this is insane."

The elder stepped forward, eyes shining, voice trembling with reverence.

The moment the doors finished groaning open, he swept past us like a man half his age, his robes fluttering behind him, his eyes wide and shining with reverence. He didn't even look back to check if we followed.

He was already reciting names, dates, eras, histories, his voice trembling with excitement.

"The Asterion Blade!" he gasped, nearly tripping over a mound of gold coins. "Forged in the reign of Isolde...oh, look at the edge, still so sharp magnificent!"

Carlie and I stood frozen at the threshold.

We couldn't move.

We couldn't speak.

We couldn't even process the sheer size of the treasure hoard stretching out before us.

Gold spilled across the floor in rivers.

Artifacts floated in gentle orbits.

Weapons hummed with dormant magic.

Scrolls glowed faintly with ancient runes.

Crystals shimmered with refracted starlight.

It was too much.

Too big.

Too impossible.

Too overwhelming.

Carlie whispered, "Zora... I think I'm gonna pass out."

I didn't answer.

Because something tugged at me.

A hum.

A pulse.

A sound like magic breathing.

I turned slowly, and saw it.

In the very center of the vault, untouched by dust or time, stood a raised plinth.

A golden pedestal rested on top of it, carved with runes that glowed softly like embers.

And above the pedestal—

A crystal floated.

Perfectly still.

Perfectly centered.

Perfectly humming.

The magic around it vibrated audibly, a low, resonant tone that made the air feel alive. It wasn't loud. It wasn't threatening. It was... calling.

Carlie followed my gaze. "Zora... what is that?"

"I...I don't know." I murmured.

My feet moved on their own, carrying me forward across the river of gold, past relics older than kingdoms, past artifacts humming with power.

The elder didn't notice.

He was still in full historian mode, voice echoing through the vault:

"The Heart of Winter! Oh, look at the frost patterns, this is from the Frostbound Era—absolutely extraordinary! Queen Zora this would..."

But his words faded behind me. I didn't hear what he was saying.

All I could hear was the hum.

All I could see was the crystal.

All I could feel was the pull.

I stepped onto the plinth.

The hum deepened...resonant, familiar in a way I couldn't explain.

It felt like it knew me.

It felt like it had been waiting.

I reached out a trembling hand.

The magic vibrated harder.

Carlie whispered behind me, "Zora... be careful."

But I didn't listen.

I moved closer.

The crystal hummed louder the closer I got.

A low, vibrating vrrrrrmmmmmmmmm that made the air ripple around my fingers.

Magic gathered like breath being held.

I reached out—

And touched it.

The crystal was warm under my fingertips.

I didn't even have time to breathe before it started humming louder.

A deep vibration rolled through the air, soft at first, then rising, swelling, building until the entire pedestal trembled beneath my hand. The sound wasn't just noise. It was alive. It was something waking up.

Vrrrrrmmmmmmmmmm.

The hum grew louder, richer, resonant enough to make my bones vibrate. I felt it in my teeth. In my chest. Carlie flinched behind me, covering her ears, but I couldn't move. The crystal held me in place, with purpose.

Magic burst outward.

A wall of shimmering gold erupted from the crystal, expanding in a perfect sphere. It passed through me like warm water, washing over my skin, filling my lungs with electric air. I gasped as it swept past me, through the plinth, through the vault walls.

The dome didn't stop.

It surged outward, swallowing the vault, the chamber, the stone corridors. It blasted through the chateau above, sending dust and loose papers flying. It rose into the open air, visible even from the courtyard, a golden hemisphere expanding larger and larger until it encompassed the entire estate.

Then it kept going.

The dome stretched across the sky, shimmering like a second sun, until it covered all of Hilguard. I felt it settle rather than saw it, like a heartbeat slowing after a sprint. The magic quieted, but the vault didn't.

Something stirred.

A soft chime echoed behind me, delicate and crystalline, like a bell made of frost.

Then a voice, melodic, and almost sleepy.

"...initializing..."

I spun around.

A girl stood at the edge of the plinth.

No...she wasn't a girl. She wasn't human. She wasn't anything I had ever seen before. She looked like a maid sculpted from moonlight white hair cascading down her back, porcelain skin, a simple dress that looked impossibly clean despite the dust swirling around us.

Her eyes were red.

Glowing red.

She blinked once, her expression confused and... Soft. Like she had just been shaken awake from a nap she didn't want to leave.

"Oh... oh dear..." she murmured, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand. "System reboot... complete... I think..."

Carlie screamed behind me. "Zora—ZORA—WHAT IS THAT—"

The maid's eyes snapped open fully.

She saw me.

And everything changed.

Her posture straightened.

Her eyes brightened.

Her expression softened into recognition.

She bowed deeply, hands folded neatly in front of her.

"Nightbearer spark detected," she said, her voice suddenly crisp and formal. "Hello, Lady Zora Did I hear that correctly?"

Umm.. Yes? What are-

She stepped closer...light, graceful, almost floating.

"Beginning new user registration."

"Wait—what Charlie... help...I think?" I whined.

She gently took my hand.

Her fingers were cool and soft.

Then a tiny needle popped out of her index finger.

"Ow—!" I yelped as it poked my fingertip.

The maid gasped, her face scrunching into a wussy, horrified expression. "Oh! I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry! It's just a little prick! I promise! I'm very gentle! Usually!"

She held my hand carefully, like it was made of glass, while a drop of blood slid onto a glowing sigil in her palm.

The sigil flared.

Her eyes flashed bright red.

"Blood signature confirmed," she said, voice returning to formal mode. "Welcome, Lady Zora. I am your guardian."

She then walked over to Charlie, took her hand and did the same.

"Tch... ow.."Charlie winced.

"I-I'm sorry it only stings for a second but it is mandatory to register all of the bloodline heirs."

She turned back to me, and bowed again, her white hair falling forward like silk.

"I exist to serve you, Lady Zora, and you as well lady Charlie.

Carlie finally found her voice. "Serve...serve us? What does that mean? Who even are you?"

The maid blinked, her red eyes flickering softly. "Oh! Yes! Introductions!" She said as she bonked herself on the head. She straightened, then immediately wilted into a wussy little posture, hands clasped nervously. "I'm... um... I'm Colette."

She said her name like she wasn't sure if she was allowed to have one.

Carlie stared. "Colette. What... what are you?"

Colette's eyes widened, glowing brighter. "A maid‑class guardian construct, designation C‑0‑L‑3‑T‑T‑E." She paused, then added shyly, "But... Colette is fine."

I swallowed hard. "Guardian...?"

"Yes!" She perked up, then immediately shrank again, flustered. "I mean—yes, Lady Zora. I am your guardian. I was created by the Nightbearer Queen to protect the bloodline detected in both of you, the royal family. My systems are not damaged. I am to protect the two of you, and maintain the vault's systems and—oh dear—"

She covered her mouth with both hands, eyes going wide.

"I'm rambling. I'm so sorry. I haven't spoken in... a very long time."

Carlie stepped closer, squinting. "How long?"

Colette's eyes flickered as she processed. "One thousand... two hundred... and forty‑three years... fifty six days, thirteen hours, ten minutes. And.....Five seconds ." She said it like she was reporting the weather. Then her face scrunched again. "Oh dear. That sounds like a lot when I say it like that."

Carlie nearly choked. "A thousand...Zora, I think she's older than the kingdom!"

Colette nodded politely. "Yes. I was created by Queen Isolde Raythorne herself. She was very kind. Very tall. Very good at braiding hair."

I stared at her, my heart pounding. "Why... why did you wake up now?"

Colette's eyes softened. "Because you touched the crystal."

She pointed delicately at the pedestal, her sleeve falling back just enough to reveal faint glowing runes etched into her wrist.

"The crystal is the Nightbearer Core. It contains the lineage signature. Only a true Nightbearer can activate it." She tilted her head, her expression turning flustered again. "And you did."

Carlie looked at me like I had grown a second head. "Zora... you activated a thousand‑year‑old magical maid by touching a floating rock."

"I didn't know it would do that," I snapped back.

Colette gasped softly. "Oh! You didn't? I'm so sorry! I should have explained! But I was... asleep." She wrung her hands, flustered. "I promise I'll do better now that I'm awake."

Carlie pointed at her. "Okay, but, why did you poke us? With a needle? What was that?"

Colette's face scrunched into maximum wussy mode. "It was just a tiny prick! I'm very gentle! Usually!" She held up her palm, showing the glowing sigil. "I needed her blood signature to confirm identity. It's standard protocol. I didn't mean to startle anyone."

Carlie threw her hands up. "You stabbed us!"

"It was a very small stab," Colette whispered, horrified.

I couldn't help it...I laughed. A shaky, stunned, overwhelmed laugh that felt like it came from somewhere deep inside me.

Colette brightened instantly, relieved. "Oh! She's laughing! That's good! That means she's not upset!"

Carlie stared at me. "Zora... what do we do with her?"

I looked at Colette.

She stood perfectly still, hands folded, red eyes glowing softly, white hair drifting like silk in the vault's magic‑charged air. She looked delicate, gentle, almost fragile.

But she had been asleep for over a thousand years.

And she had woken because of me.

"I don't know," I whispered. "But she's here now."

Colette bowed again, deeper this time.

"I am yours, Lady Zora, Lady Charlie, Whatever you need... I will do."

Her voice was soft.

Her eyes were bright.

Her presence felt ancient.

And somewhere deep inside me, something I couldn't remember stirred.

Something warm.

Something familiar.

Something that made my chest ache.

I didn't know what it was.

But Colette did.

She looked at me with a knowing softness, her wussy expression fading into something gentle and reverent.

"You have awakened the vault," she said quietly. "And now... everything begins."
