Chapter 38: Return to Sect
They left the village at first light and her heels immediately had something to say about it.
Two days of mountain path. Wet stone. Old ruts. Sections where the road had decided to become a stream and then changed its mind and left the evidence behind.
"I'm filing a complaint," she told the road.
The road did not respond.
"With who? I don't know. The sect. The universe. Whoever approved wet stone as a viable walking surface." She caught a rut wrong and did a small, involuntary hop to recover.
Nobody looked at her, or so she chose to believe this. "Procedurally dismissed," she announced to her left foot. "We're walking. The road goes to Duskwind. Duskwind has a bed. Contribute."
Her left foot did not find this argument persuasive.
The wounded set the pace, two outer disciples on makeshift stretchers and one with his arm in cloth that was still seeping.
The group was smaller than when they left, and she kept running into that fact like a rock in her shoe.
Chen Bai. Pei Sou. Lin Wu. Tao Lin.
She wasn't doing anything with the names, they were just there.
Renji fell into step beside her after the first hour. He stayed silent, and just matched her pace. Breathed and existed in her peripheral vision, which she noticed it. That was a Renji thing, knowing when not to talk.
Eventually he quietly said, "How's the arm?"
"Fine."
"It was purple yesterday."
"It went back."
"Eventually."
She could hear the smile without looking.
Her lips about to twitch. 'Don't,' she told them.
They twitched anyway.
"Shut up, Renji."
"Yes, Senior Sister Naked Fox."
She turned her head.
He was already looking intensely at a rock on the left side of the road like it was the most interesting rock he'd ever seen. Ears just slightly pink at the tips.
Her cheeks puffed up in full commitment, the kind that had no comeback behind it, and stood there staring at him. He kept looking at the rock, while her cheeks stayed puffed for a full four seconds before she gave up and faced forward.
'I'm going to get him for that. I don't know how yet, but I am absolutely going to get him for that.'

"I hate you," she told the System.
"Hm?" said Renji.
"Not you. The other voice in my head."
He nodded like this was a completely reasonable thing to say.
The forest thinned by midday. Mountain air came in cold and clean and her nose twitched at it, some animal part of her reading the wind out of habit. Pine. Stone. Damp earth. The faint iron-copper thread underneath that she recognized now and hadn't, three days ago.
Yan Qishen walked at the front like he was composing his report in his head and it was going extremely well. Mei Rulan followed close, whip coiled, fire qi making warmth around her that she hadn't offered to share once.
Tharia watched their backs.
"I see you both," she said, not loudly. Loud enough.
Neither of them turned. But Yan's shoulder did a thing.
'Hmft.'
Kaela walked at the center. Present.
Tharia's eyes snagged on her for a second or two, then away.
The waypoint appeared around a bend in the road like the heaven had decided she'd suffered enough.
Low stone building, small private rooms, common room with a fire already going.
The smell hit her before she'd cleared the doorway — woodsmoke and something cooking, actual cooking, with vegetables in it. Her nose flared and her tail swished all on its own.
She stood in the doorway, lost in it, until someone's head bumped into her shoulder from behind.
"Dafuk—" She didn't move.
"Move," said the outer disciple behind her.
"Shh." She held up a finger. "Moment."
"You're blocking—"
"Shh."
She found the fire, and ate whatever they put in front of her: grain porridge, vegetables, something that might have been mushrooms. She hunched over the bowl with the focused devotion of someone who had not eaten real food in three days.
'Best thing I've ever eaten,' she decided on the third bite.
'Fourth-best,' she revised on the seventh.
"The mushroom," she whispered on the mushroom, "is incredible."
The outer disciple across the fire stared at her, but she ignored him completely.
The common room filled slowly around her. Outer disciples spreading into corners, some already half-asleep against each other. Someone talked quietly about nothing. Renji found a wall and slid down it.
As Tharia stared at the fire, the woman at the corner table came into focus after a while.
Traveler, not sect. Road satchel, boots worn correctly at the heel. Maybe thirty. She was eating without looking at anyone.
Tharia looked back at the fire.
Looked back at the woman.
Their eyes met. The woman's expression was neutral and then, just barely, wasn't. A fraction of warmth. There and gone.
Tharia looked at the fire.
'No,' she told herself.
Her tail swished once.
'Absolutely do not,' she confirmed.
The woman moved first.
She settled into the space beside Tharia at the fire and set a cup down in front of Tharia.
Tharia looked at it., then at her.
"You've been staring at that fire for an hour," the woman said. "Figured you needed something else to look at."
"I'm fine."
"You're not... That's okay."
Said like a fact.
Tharia looked at the cup. Tea. Actual tea. Ginger in it. She picked it up.
They sat in quiet for a while, the fire popped, and around them outer disciples talked or slept. Something in Tharia's chest that had been clamped down since the village — since before, since the mud and the gate and the names — started, slowly, to unclamp.
"Merchant?"
"Herbalist. Trader when it makes sense." A pause. "Mira."
No expectation after it. Just the name, left there. Tharia noticed the absence of the reaching.
"Tharia," she said anyway.
Mira nodded at the cup. "Good, you like it. Your ears were doing a whole performance about it."
"Everyone says that."
"Also the tail."
Tharia's tail flicked.
"Traitor."
Mira laughed, short, but genuine. Tharia felt the corners of her mouth move without her permission.
They talked. Not about the mission, not about the weight she'd been carrying all day. Mira didn't ask and Tharia didn't volunteer. They talked about road food, waypoint mattresses, a sect Mira had passed through where every disciple had the same expression — that particular combination of judgment and self-satisfaction that Tharia was intimately familiar with.
"The inner disciples on this mission," Tharia said, at some point. It came out level. "One of them thinned the watch against direct orders, and people died because of it."
Mira was listening quietly.
"Did he know that would happen?"
"He knew it was a risk, probably. Yet, he decided it wasn't his problem."
"Mm." Mira refilled her cup without asking. "That kind of person always decides that. Right up until it becomes their problem."
Tharia turned it over.
"Yeah," she said. "Yeah, that's about right."
The fire burned lower, as the common room thinned out to just the two of them and a couple of exhausted outers in the far corner. Renji was asleep against his wall, which was good.
Mira offered her hand. No pressure. Just an offer.
Tharia's tail curled once around her own ankle, her ears did a small, uncertain flick.
'I know what this is,' she thought. 'Good.'
She took it.
They went to the last private room. Her brain was doing something complicated and loud the entire walk there.
...
Tharia woke before dawn to Mira packing her satchel in the dark.
She lay still and watched.
When Mira was done she glanced over.
"Different roads," she said.
"Mm," Tharia agreed.
At the door: "You're going to be fine."
Not the way people said it when they needed you to be. The way people said it when they'd actually looked.
She left.
Tharia lay there as the window went from black to blue.
Chen Bai's stupid jokes, Tao Lin dying for grain that wasn't even his. The names sitting there whether she wanted them to or not.
Silver hair. A comb she'd left at the sect. Warmth that hadn't asked for anything back.
'It's fine,' she told herself. 'She was passing through. That was the whole point.'
Her tail curled tighter around her leg.
'Fuck you,' she told her brain. 'I said it's fine.'
She sat up. Reached for the comb out of habit, but her hand closed on nothing.
'Right. I had left it at the sect.'
Her fingers stayed in the empty air a second too long, as her tail went still.
Then, she let it go. Got up. Found her heels.

She found an empty corner of the common room before the others were up.
The fire had burned down to coals. Nobody watching. She stood in the quiet and let the veil build from her core outward — familiar now, the qi moving through paths that had started to feel like her own and not someone else's map.
She used the Transparent illusion.
Clean edges, without shimmer, even her tail cooperated, which it still did roughly sixty percent of the time.
She held it.
One breath. Two. Five. Eight.
'Come on. Further.'
Ten. Twelve. Fourteen — the old record, the Suyin-audience record — and she kept going while there was no one watching.
Sixteen.
Seventeen.
Eighteen.
Her lungs started to politely request an opinion.
'You don't get an opinion,' she told them.
Nineteen.
Twenty.
She let the veil drop deliberately.
The coals popped once.
"Ha," she told the empty room, quietly enough not to wake anyone.

Tharia looked at the notification for a second.
'Forty-nine point two five.'
She rolled her shoulders and went to find breakfast before anyone else could claim the mushrooms.
The second day's march was quieter than the first. Same weight, just carried differently. The names were still there.
'I'll figure it out,' she told herself around the third hour. 'I always do.'
Her tail swished, as if decided-feeling, more itself than yesterday.
They passed through the sect gates at dawn on the third day.
Great Elder Suyin was on the platform.
'Oh.'
She hadn't expected that. Him just... there, waiting, like he'd known to be.
Reports came. Yan's version, clean and strategic and Kaela's, steady and leaving no room: "Command decisions during the second night resulted in unnecessary casualties."
The courtyard went so quiet she could hear her own pulse.
Yan measured his words. Kaela said she'd submitted her report. Suyin raised one hand and both of them stopped.
"Responsibility is not a contest," he said. "It is a burden."
Then her name came up.
It kept coming up.
Protected the civilians. Remained active past qi depletion. Assisted in recovery of captives. And then Kaela's voice, level and not looking at her: "She adapted. She did not freeze or retreat. I recommend her for the next inner disciple selection test."
Eyes... A lot of eyes.
She met them, head up and chin level. Ears — with significant active effort — staying down.
Suyin's gaze found her and stayed.
'Look all you want,' she thought, holding her ears flat through sheer will. 'This fox carried the whole mission.'
"Outer disciple Tharia." His voice carried without effort. "Your talents were applied correctly."
She waited. There was always more.
"Unconventional paths attract both opportunity and scrutiny." A pause. "You will be observed."
'...Observed.'
Her cheeks puffed — just for a second, the full committed puff — before she caught it and hauled her face back into something that looked like dignity. Not fast enough. She could see two outer disciples near the left pretending extremely hard not to have noticed.
She fixed her gaze on a point above Suyin's shoulder and radiated dignity at it.

The courtyard dispersed.
Yan's silence had something stored in it, while Mei Rulan's smile didn't reach her eyes.
Tharia looked at both of them.
"See you later," she said. Audible enough to reach them. Both of them looked back for half a beat.
Tharia turned away first, which felt better than she expected.
Renji materialized at her elbow the way he always did.
"You good?" he said, after a moment.
"Not quiet yet," she said.
His shoulder bumped hers. Brief. Warm. Gone.
She looked at the courtyard.
The arm didn't hurt anymore. The third vein was just hers now, settled. The names were quieter than yesterday, maybe quieter again tomorrow.
She was back.
Her tail flicked once.

[POV: Kaela]
That evening, Kaela returned to her courtyard to find Lyra on her bed.
Boots off. Arms behind her head. Staring at the ceiling looking as if she had been waiting long enough to get bored.
"You don't live here," Kaela said.
"Your bed's softer." Lyra didn't move. "Besides, you weren't using it."
"You broke in."
"Walked in. Your wards are genuinely embarrassing."
Kaela let it go, because Lyra thrived on reaction and she was too tired to provide it.
Silence. Then Lyra rolled onto her side, the lazy edge dropping. Her fiery tail swayed once.
"Cave mansion outside the Verdant border," she said. "Old ruins. The elders are already sniffing around it."
"You want to go first."
"I want to go now." She sat up. "I'm tired of drills. Blood, not forms." Then her tail dropped, fractionally. "But I can't yet."
"Rival sects. Old formations. Traps." Kaela said.
Lyra's grin went sharp. "Perfect."
"Your team?"
"I was going to grab you and someone competent who would follow orders without dying."
"Take Tharia."
Lyra blinked, then laughed. "The little naked fox who's been giving everyone a free show?"
Kaela's ears twitched. "What?"
"The illusion outfit." Lyra tilted her head. "At my stage I see straight through it. Though if she's doing it on purpose—" Something sharpened behind her eyes. "Is she doing it on purpose?"
"She's capable," Kaela said, pulling the conversation back. "I watched her work in the forest. Silent and techniques most outer disciples can't access, she even adapts under pressure."
Lyra went quiet, her grin shifted somewhere more interested.
"Adapts under pressure," she repeated. "Advanced techniques." Her tail swayed. "And walks around like that." A beat. "I want to meet her... Properly."
"Cave mansion," Kaela said. "One week."
"You, me, and the 'lewd' fox." Lyra stretched, satisfied from her spine outward. "Finally. Something worth showing up for."
She bounced off the bed and grabbed Kaela's wrist.
"Bathhouse. You smell like goblin."
"I have—"
"The report. Can. Wait."
Kaela's ears flattened, letting herself be dragged, which was the closest she was going to get to agreeing.
