I Was a Chaos God, but Now I’d Rather Just be a Naked Fox.

Chapter 28: Spirit Fox Kits

Dawn broke quietly, with no storm, mud, or formation detonating six feet from her face. Tharia stared at the ceiling of her cave and found this deeply suspicious.

"Something's going to go wrong," she told the ceiling. "Days like this always have something wrong. It's hidden and waiting."

The ceiling offered nothing.

She sat up. Everything reported in sequence: arms, legs, ribs from the qi shockwave, and her feet, which had apparently spent the night filing an extremely detailed grievance.

She looked at them.

"You're right," she told her feet. "You're completely right, I hear every word."

She reached for Serenya's wooden comb. The frost-and-spring-flowers scent hit her before her fingers closed around the handle, and finding herself sniffing it like a puppy. "It's fainter than last week!" She held it close for a second longer than the hair or tail required.

'Almost got blown up... Joren... The world is deeply strange.' She thought, dragging the comb through her tail's fur.

Tangle. Drag. Wince.

'I miss you... Slightly more than usual today.'

Then the high heels.

She picked them up, looked at her feet with blisters on the blisters now, raw patches where the skin had given up entirely, mud still caked in the creases despite last night's cleaning.

Then looked at the ointment tin sat on the shelf, empty. She'd used the last of it the night before; now it was just a tin, frost-scent gone, no weight left at all.

She set it back on the shelf anyway and didn't throw it out.

'I'll get more... Eventually.'

Her feet throbbed as she laced the heels on, as her feet did not agree, but they didn't get a vote.

Halfway through lacing them, the System notification she'd been ignoring since last night blinked back into existence, smug and patient.

System:

[SYSTEM NOTICE]

Good morning...

The Shop is still open you know. You have 108 Chaos Essence.

Note: This will not last forever. The System is not suggesting anything.

Secondary Note: You still have unclaimed quest reward.

[collapse]

"Oh," Tharia said. "So NOW you want to be helpful." Then checked the quest in question.

System:

[SYSTEM NOTICE]

Quest: Exceed Vein resonance threshold 50% (95%).

Chaos Essence: +1

Chaos Essence: 108 → 109

[collapse]

She stared at the number.

One hundred and eight… no, and one hundred nine. Survival bonus from the formation detonation, stacked on top of everything else.

'Financially speaking… almost dying was my best day yet. That's bleak. That's extremely bleak.' She pulled up the interface anyway.

The Illusory Raiment Modular Builder unfolded in front of her, crisp and infuriatingly organized. Little preview windows, with color selectors, and a transparency slider she absolutely was not going to touch before breakfast. Maybe.

Her tail swished.

'Just looking.'

She clicked the skirt section.

The Micro Skirt (Mesh Overlay) entry gave her a preview that made her ears go flat. She scrolled past it.

The Micro Skirt (Solid) had options: Length and Pleat. She poked at the pleat toggle and watched the preview adjust into something short, structured, deeply practical-looking from the waist up, and aggressively not practical below it.

“That’s a school uniform,” she muttered out loud. “That’s an extremely short school uniform skirt. Who designed this? Why does this exist in a cultivation shop?”

She immediately slapped a hand over her mouth. “I’m doing research. Very serious research.” She still added it to the cart though.

A Cream-colored knee-length was an option but she scrolled past it twice before accepting that her hands were making choices her brain hadn't fully authorized.

Thigh-high stockings next. She went black, sheer, because at least that was a coherent aesthetic and not just chaos.

The mesh top took her longer as there were seventeen variants. She eliminated fourteen on principle, stared at the remaining three for an uncomfortable amount of time, and picked the one with the least structural commitment. White. Fitted. Technically a top.

The cropped jacket redeemed everything. Short, structured, deep burgundy that matched close enough to the skirt. She clicked it before she could second-guess anything and hit the cart summary before the preview could talk her out of it.

System:

[CART SUMMARY]

Thigh-High Stockings — Black (Sheer, Emotion-Resistant Weave): 8 Essence

Tharia's tail went rigid.

"FORTY-SEVEN."

System:

[SYSTEM NOTICE]

Confirmed. That is the number.

Note: You currently have 109 Essence. You will have 62 after this purchase.

Secondary Note: The System does not offer refunds.

[collapse]

"This is a scam," she said. "This is a beautifully designed, extremely specific scam targeting my exact weaknesses."

She stared at the confirm button, tail swishing once.

'The jacket is very good though.'

Her hand won over her brain again, as she hit confirm.

The outfit materialized in a shimmer of pink threads weaving outward from her core — seams stitching themselves into existence, fabric solidifying one layer at a time. The stockings snapped into place first, then the skirt settled with a soft weight she hadn't expected, the mesh top and the jacket.

Tharia looked down, then walked to the small water basin and tried to use the reflection. The basin was too small and too wavy for a proper view. She tilted it. Tilted herself. Propped it on the empty ointment tin.

Her tail kept getting in the way.

"I can't even SEE it properly," she announced to the cave. "I spent forty-seven essence and I can't even—"

She clicked her heels deliberately on the stone floor. Click. Click.

"Fine. It's fine. The jacket… looks excellent from down here."

System:

[SYSTEM NOTICE]

Chaos Essence: 109 → 62.

New Outfit: Active.

Stability Rating: Above Average.

Note: The jacket is doing a lot of work. The System approves of the jacket.

[collapse]

"The jacket was my idea," Tharia said.

She grabbed Serenya's comb, smoothed her hair one more time, and walked out into the morning.

The half-day reprieve had been posted to the Mission Board since yesterday, but Tharia hadn't paid it much attention until she reached the central courtyard and found it full of silver-white fur.

Spirit fox kits. Dozens of them. Tumbling across the grass, yipping, stealing each other's tails and darting between disciples' legs like lightning with fur attached.

Tharia stopped walking, as her ears went straight up.

"Oh," she said, out loud, to no one. "Oh, that's not fair."

A kit the size of a large rabbit careened directly into her ankles, ricocheted off, looked up at her with enormous gold eyes, and sneezed.

Tharia crouched down immediately. "Hello. You are a disaster, I respect that about you."

The kit sneezed again and bit her sleeve.

"Excellent," she told it. "Very good instincts."

Her tail curled out behind her and the kit's eyes went enormous. It lunged for it. Tharia yanked it out of reach by reflex.

"That's mine," she said. "We haven't even been formally introduced."

The kit sat down and stared at her tail with the focus of someone planning a military campaign.

'Don't,' her tail tried to communicate.

The kit launched itself anyway.

Across the courtyard, she spotted Joren standing rigid near the gate.

Every kit within ten feet was gravitating toward him with the precision of creatures that had identified the most uncomfortable target available. One had already pressed its nose to his boot, and another was circling him in slow, investigative loops.

Joren's expression was the face of a man confronting something he had not prepared for and refused to admit he couldn't handle.

Tharia's ears swiveled toward Renji, who was watching with a soft, slightly helpless smile.

"He's terrified," she said.

Renji nodded.

"Of kits."

Renji made a sound that was not quite confirmation and not quite denial.

She looked at Joren. Thought about yesterday, his hand on her arm hauling her upright, running through smoke and debris, no hesitation.

'Terrified of fox kits,' she thought. 'Not of formations exploding. Interesting.'

Tharia cupped her hands around her mouth and smirked. "Joren! Come join us!"

Every kit in the vicinity turned toward the noise, as Joren's jaw tightened.

"I'm fine where I am."

"You are absolutely not fine where you are. They can smell 'not fine.'"

A kit yipped. Two more broke from the general chaos and trotted purposefully toward him.

Joren took one step back.

"Don't retreat," Tharia said. "They go faster if you retreat."

He retreated, and the kits went faster.

Renji covered his mouth.

"THARIA—" Joren's voice cracked on her name in a way it absolutely never had during their duel, and Tharia stored that memory somewhere very safe for future use.

He walked forward stiffly, like a man marching into battle, jaw locked. One kit bumped its head into his shin. His expression broke, just at the edges as he looked down.

The kit looked up.

His face did something complicated. Several things, actually, in fast succession. Then he crouched, as one hand extended. The kit sniffed his fingers with professional thoroughness and then headbutted his palm.

Something in Joren's shoulders unknotted.

Tharia turned away before he could catch her watching.

'Okay,' she thought. 'Maybe he's not entirely insufferable.'

Her tail flicked once.

'Shuuush... no telling him.'

She found a quieter edge of the courtyard.

The kit from before — the one with the campaign plans for her tail — had followed her at a distance and was now pretending to be very interested in a patch of grass approximately two feet away.

"I see you," Tharia said.

The kit looked up with enormous innocence.

She sat cross-legged on the stone and let her tail drift behind her, relaxed.

The kit pounced. Got three full seconds of tail before she pulled it away, and made a sound of deep offended betrayal when it lost.

"One more," she said.

She let her tail drift again.

The kit's eyes tracked it with terrifying focus.

'Strange,' she thought. 'I spent years in the Empire surrounded by foxes and I never felt this.' She scratched behind the kit's ears when it finally gave up on the tail and flopped against her knee. The small warm weight settled there like it belonged. 'What's different now?'

She didn't have an answer, her ears drooped slightly.

A shadow moved near the far archway. She didn't catch more than the edge of silver hair before it was gone — maybe a trick of the light, the kind the sect's upper terraces threw down in strange angles.

Her nose twitched once and she looked a second longer than she should have.

Gone, if it was ever there.

The kit sneezed on her knee.

"Thank you," she told it. "Very grounding."

By afternoon the kits were being coaxed back to their handlers and the courtyard slowly emptied. Tharia lingered until the last silver tail disappeared through the east gate, then clicked her way back to the training dummies.

The jacket was, in fact, doing a lot covering. The skirt was an ongoing negotiation with physics and the wind.

She worked through the forms Kaela had drilled into her — footwork, stance, the basic strike sequences she'd spent the last week bruising herself over. The dummies didn't react, they never did. But the rhythm was starting to feel less like copying someone else's movements and more like remembering something her body already half-knew.

Thirty minutes in, she pushed her qi into an illusion overlay — a duplicate of herself stepping left while she went right.

Held it for eleven seconds before it collapsed.

'Better.'

She pushed again. Eight seconds. Fourteen. Nine.

'Inconsistent. But it's something.'

Her heel caught a crack in the stone. She stumbled, caught herself, and the illusion popped with a small embarrassing shimmer.

"That counts as a stylistic choice," she announced to the empty training ground.

[It does not count as a stylistic choice. When will you decide to put on some panties?]

"It does now." She ignored the later question, as she ran the sequence again.

An hour later, sweating, blister on her left heel communicating emergency updates, she sat on the training ground steps and pulled up her overlay.

Normal numbers. The usual stubborn crawl.

Then the notification appeared.

System:

[SYSTEM NOTICE]

Milestone Reached.

Illusion Proficiency: 40% (+1%)

Illusory Raiment: Rank D → Rank C

New Function Unlocked: Wardrobe Roulette.

Cost: 5 Chaos Essence per spin.

Effect: Random outfit generated from full Shop catalogue.

Risk: Variable. Results are not guaranteed to be wearable in public.

Note: This was always going to unlock.

Secondary Note: The timing is, admittedly, not ideal.

[collapse]

Tharia stared at the notification, then read it again.

"Rank C," she said, looking at the Roulette unlock. Then looked at her Chaos Essence count.

Sixty-three. She had sixty-three. She had spent forty-seven on a coordinated outfit this morning — an outfit she had agonized over and carefully assembled — and the Roulette, the cheap, chaotic, random version that cost five essence per spin, had been one rank-up away the entire time.

“SYSTEM!” Tharia hissed, then caught herself and lowered her voice to a furious whisper. “You knew. You absolute— damn it— you knew this whole time.”

System:

[SYSTEM NOTICE]

The System was aware of the rank requirements, yes. The System did not volunteer this information.

Note: The Shop was also available.

Secondary Note: The System suggests taking a breath.

"I spent FORTY-SEVEN ESSENCE on a COORDINATED OUTFIT—"

[The jacket is very good.]

"—WHEN I COULD HAVE JUST SPUN THE ROULETTE—"

Note: You might have gotten something significantly worse.

Secondary Note: The pleated skirt is a solid choice with stable essence investment.

The System stands by this analysis.

[collapse]

Tharia's tail lashed.

Her ears pinned flat.

She sat in furious, blister-footed silence on the training ground steps while the evening breeze ruffled her carefully assembled, entirely deliberate, forty-seven-essence outfit.

She clicked her heels once on the stone floor and muttered, “The jacket IS good though. I still hate you.” Then louder to the empty cave: “I still hate you!”

System:

Secondary Note: Go rest. Your heel is filing a formal complaint.

The complaint has been reviewed. It is valid.

[collapse]

Tharia looked at her heel.

"Yeah," she said. "Okay."

She clicked up the steps and went back to the cave. The empty ointment tin sat on the shelf where she'd left it. She picked it up, turned it over, then set it back down.

'Get more ointment,' she told herself. 'Tomorrow. First thing.'

It was, mostly, a good day.
