Chapter 15: Life in the Caves
The dawn bell hit like a hammer to the skull.
Tharia's eyes snapped open. The sound—deep, bronze, judgmental—vibrated through the stone floor and into her bones. The Duskwind Sect's "Bronze Throat" didn't just ring. It accused. You're awake late. You're already behind. The sun doesn't wait.
Groans erupted from the tunnels. Someone tripped over a water basin and cursed loud enough to get silenced by a patrolling senior disciple. Footsteps scrambled. The sect was waking up in the worst possible way.
Tharia kept her eyes shut a moment longer.
Her cave had no door. She'd left the curtain open on purpose—wanted the valley wind, not stuffy stone silence. The morning air rolled in, cold and wild. She sat up. Stretched. Her illusory robe fell open as the chill touched her skin.
For one slow breath, she just existed.
No System nagging. No people staring. Just her, the dawn, and the sleepy sway of her violet tail brushing against bare stone. The warmth of her own body. The private thrill of being real before the day's mask snapped into place.
Her tail curled. She sighed.
The cave walls stared back... bare, gray, and very depressing.
"Unacceptable."
She tapped her chin. Flicked her wrist as tiny drifting stars bloomed across the ceiling. Soft scarlet light seeped into the walls. Her hard bedroll shimmered like pale gold silk.
All fake. All hers. All better.
The glow spilled into the corridor.
Two recruits slowed at her archway. Their eyes went wide—first at the lights, the floating stars, the palace illusion crammed into a stone box. Then their gazes dropped.
Tharia was sitting on the bed's edge. Robe undone. Bare to the morning air. One hand idly stroking her tail.
She didn't move to cover herself.
She met their eyes. Blinked slowly.
One boy's face turned toasted red. "So... pretty," he muttered.
The other went pale. "Shameless!"
A jolt shot up Tharia's spine—electric, buzzing, familiar. Not cold. Heat. The kind she hadn't felt since the forest trek.
The System flared in her mind.

"Eeep!"
The notification snapped her out of it. She used her hands to cover herself as her tail puffed like a bottle brush. The boys scrambled away, nervous laughter echoing down the hall.
Tharia sat frozen, heart hammering.
Her cheeks burned. Her ears were flat. Her hands shook as she clutched her chest.
But under the embarrassment, under the squeak and the panic, something else sat in her chest. Warm. Stubborn. Defiant.
'They looked. So what? Their shock was just fuel.'
She exhaled slow. The embarrassment was still there. But it was shrinking.
She finished her morning routine with vengeance. Brushed her hair until it gleamed like spun violet silk. Her reflection in the spirit-pool fragment she'd stolen from the palace library showed sharp violet eyes and a defiant tilt to her chin. She chose an outfit that was practically a dare: black micro-skirt that barely qualified as clothing, cropped white top that showed just enough under-boob to make her smile.
'If they wanted to look, let them look... '
...
Breakfast was grim.
Spirit rice and bitter greens that tasted like cardboard and discipline. Tharia chewed mechanically, her tail swishing under the table. The other recruits avoided eye contact. News traveled fast in stone tunnels.
After, they were marched to the high platforms.
The mist clung to the cliffs. It smelled like damp earth and the electric pressure of gathered Qi. Standing on the highest terrace was Kaela—inner disciple, moonlight-carved posture, Qi lines embedded in her uniform making her shimmer.
"I am Kaela," she announced. Her voice cut through mist like a blade through silk. "I oversee your drills. The sect does not coddle. You will learn to stand, or you will fall."
Attendants moved through the crowd, handing out robes. Drab. Gray. Each one looked like it had been cut from the same bolt of disappointment.
"You are issued one robe," Kaela continued. "Plain. If you ruin it, it costs spirit stones. Wear it when you must." Her gaze flicked to Tharia's micro-skirt. Her red eyes narrowed for just a heartbeat—confusion, maybe irritation, gone before anyone else noticed. "Outside of that... the sect does not care how you clothe yourselves. Only that you obey."
Tharia's tail swished. She didn't put the gray robe on. 'Nope... too ugly.'
Kaela's lecture began. Foundation Veins—where mortals opened spiritual channels. Aspect Awakening—where disciples chose their dominant element. Domain Formation—where core disciples carved reality itself. The climb was steep. The requirements were brutal. The failure rate was high.
Tharia listened with growing amusement.
She'd never circulated Qi a day in her life. Her illusion was instinct. Birthright. Fox nonsense that didn't care about meridians or proper channels.
The System chimed in her mind.

She grinned.
After assembly, Tharia didn't go back to the caves.
She wandered toward the Library Pavilion instead. The building was older than the rest—stone weathered smooth, roof tiles green with moss. It smelled like dust and centuries of frustration and the particular mustiness of knowledge nobody wanted to learn. The first floor was a maze of frayed scrolls and warped wooden shelves. She trailed her fingers over spines, feeling the rough texture of ancient paper and cheaper modern replacements.
'There. Opening the Foundation Veins.'
She unrolled it on a reading desk. Squinted at crude diagrams of meridians that looked like someone had tried to map a river system while drunk. It looked complicated, boring, and utterly unlike the fluid pink energy that lived in her gut.
But if she wanted to stay in this playground, she had to learn the rules.
Before she could break them.
She tucked the scroll under her arm and wandered out onto the terraces. The sun was setting, painting the valley in shades of amber and deep violet. The temperature was dropping fast—mountain air didn't hold warmth once the light left. Far below, the hanging bridges looked like silver threads stitching mountains together, glowing faintly with protective glyphs.
This place was huge. Cold. Full of people who wanted to turn her into a "proper" cultivator.
Tharia smiled. Her tail swayed in a slow, content arc.
She was a fake. A rebel. Currently the best-dressed girl in the valley. "Yes that is me...!"
And she hadn't even begun to show them what a shameless fox could really do.
"Let's see what else this place is hiding," she whispered. Her breath misted in the cooling air as she turned back toward the caves.
The night belonged to the Duskwind Sect. But the Duskwind Sect might eventually belong to her. Or burned by her.
