I Was a Chaos God, but Now I’d Rather Just be a Naked Fox.

Chapter 12: Sect Entry Test

The boots lasted exactly one day before Tharia declared war on them.

"They're instruments of torture." She stared at her feet that morning with genuine betrayal. "Leather prison cells. I'm taking them back."

Serenya looked up from her tea. "You wore them for six hours."

"Six hours of agony."

"They need to be broken in."

"My feet are broken. The boots won. I surrender." Tharia wiggled her toes experimentally. The blisters from yesterday had healed but the memory remained. "We're going back to the market. I'm finding something that doesn't hate me."

"Practical boots—"

"—are clearly not an option for my delicate fox feet. I'm getting different ones. Final answer."

Serenya sighed the sigh of someone who had already lost this argument before it started.

...

The crafts district smelled like leather and polish and fresh-cut wood, and every merchant looked like they'd decided today was the day

Serenya steered Tharia toward a stall with sensible traveling boots. Sturdy soles. Muted colors. The kind of footwear that said I make reasonable life choices.

"These."

Tharia's gaze had already snagged on something across the street.

Beneath a velvet canopy sat a pair of lacquered heels on a pedestal like they were holy relics. Silver filigree. Polished black wood. They caught the light and held it hostage.

"Those."

"Absolutely not."

"But—"

"You are going to a sect trial. Not a banquet."

"I could go to a sect trial in style." Tharia was already moving toward them, tail swishing with purpose.

The merchant perked up immediately. "Imported from the capital! Noblewomen wear these to the Jade Court. Silk-reinforced. They'll outlast your ambition."

Tharia slipped one on.

Her spine straightened without asking her permission. Her posture shifted into something she'd last worn in the Palace, except this time she'd chosen it. She took a step.

Clack.

The sound was deeply satisfying.

She wobbled. "Eep—!" Caught herself. Grinned. "Perfect."

Serenya closed her eyes. When she opened them she looked like someone who had just accepted a future full of preventable problems. She reached for her coin pouch.

"The elders will think you're reckless."

"Good." Tharia took another experimental step. Clack. Clack. "Let them."

Serenya slipped the merchant extra coin for another tin of foot ointment. Tharia pretended not to notice.

...

The Sect Pavilion was chaos.

Seven great emblems hung at the square's center, surrounded by stalls and disciples and the barely-contained desperation of people who really wanted to look impressive. Monthly recruitment day. The square was packed.

"Ember Hall." Serenya's voice was low and clinical as they walked. "Reckless. High casualties. Frostspire is rigid. Dreaming Lotus binds minds—they're a cult with good marketing."

Tharia watched a disciple in flame-red robes conjure a spray of sparks that nearly set his own sleeve on fire. "It's like shopping for your future."

"Your future shouldn't be an impulse purchase."

They passed Ironfang Pavilion. The disciples stood like statues in grey and silver, radiating the specific smugness of people who believed they were better than you. Tharia kept her chin up and her heels clicking. Clack. Clack. Clack. Defiant rhythm. One of them glanced at her feet and sneered.

She smiled back.

At the square's edge, half-hidden behind a Skyreach banner, sat a modest stall with a faded crescent moon emblem. No flashy demonstrations. Just worn scrolls and a handful of disciples in plain charcoal robes.

A girl sat on a crate beside the stall.

Rabbitkin. Long white ears. Silver hair that caught the light wrong, like it was reflecting something that wasn't quite there. When she looked up and met Tharia's eyes, something clicked, not recognition exactly. Just the sense that this was going to matter.

The rabbit girl tilted her head. Smiled slightly. Went back to reading.

"Duskwind Sect." Serenya followed Tharia's gaze. "Minor faction. Scattered resources. Very little influence."

"Or very little politics." Tharia's tail flicked with interest. "I like them."

...

The Eastern Courtyard was stone and silence and approximately forty terrified candidates standing in neat lines while elders sat on a raised pavilion looking bored.

"Tharia. Illusion path."

Serenya's hand touched her shoulder briefly. "Prove your control."

"Or my chaos," Tharia whispered back.

She stepped onto the platform.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

The whispers started immediately.

"Is she wearing heels?"

"That robe's an illusion."

"Beastkin always—"

Tharia exhaled. A phantom fox manifested beside her in silver-blue fire. Its eyes glowed. Its tails—nine of them, a complete lie, absolutely beautiful—fanned out like a peacock display.

"Begin."

The formation activated.

Phantom spears erupted from the floor. A shadow-serpent lunged. False flame burst at her feet. The air turned hostile.

Tharia's mind split in two.

Thread one: hold the kimono stable. Thread two: control the fox. The formation's pressure pushed against both, trying to crack them.

The fox lunged. Shredded a spear into light-motes. Tharia spun, her tail sweeping through the serpent. Her kimono flickered at the shoulder.

Cool air hit her skin — shoulder, the kimono's edge giving way. Tharia gritted her teeth. 'Not today.' She shoved qi into the weave and the fox surged forward in a whirlwind of blue flame, scattering the remaining phantoms. Her knees trembled. Her new heels were not designed for combat and were filing a formal complaint. She stayed upright.

The gong rang.

Tharia dismissed the fox. It dissolved into sparks. Her kimono bled back to stable red. She was soaked in sweat and her feet were screaming but she was standing.

A Duskwind disciple approached—young man, polite smile, tired eyes. "Wait with the others. You'll be called for results shortly."

Tharia nodded. Moved to the waiting area. Her heels still clicked. Her heart still hammered.

She didn't know if the elders liked her.

Her heels still clicked.

'Good enough.'
