Chapter 4: Into the Forest (R18)
The illusion robe held steady. Mostly.
Tharia eyed it suspiciously as she walked. The foxfire shimmer pulsed in time with her breathing, like it was thinking about misbehaving.
“Don’t,” she warned it.
The robe flickered anyway.
“I said don’t.”
Then it did the thing again, longer this time. She could feel the Chaos Qi in the weave, restless, warm, almost playful. The System hadn’t said a word since the squirrel incident. She chose to interpret that as approval.
The forest stretched wide and lazy around her. Pine and damp earth on the air. Birds calling overhead. The river murmuring somewhere to her left.
'No one out here cares what I'm wearing. Or not wearing. One of the forest's finest qualities, honestly.'
She'd been living like this for four years, waking up in forests, market towns, or once, memorably, on the roof of a very surprised farming family's barn.
No schedules. No expectations. Just her and whatever trouble she could find.
She stopped dead in the middle of the path.
There was no reason. The trail was clear. She wasn’t tired. She just… stopped. A stripe of sunlight cut through the canopy and landed warm across her bare shoulders and chest.
'There is literally no one here.'
No tutors. No sect elders with their measuring eyes. No palace guards. No travelers who recognized her ears and started whispering about the Kitsune Princess in that hushed, careful tone.
Just trees. Morning light. And a forest that genuinely did not give a single shit.
Her fingers found the seam of the illusion before she'd consciously made the decision.
She'd worn illusion cloth since she was fourteen. Chosen it over real fabric the moment she'd learned the technique. Half because she liked the skill of it, half because there was something quietly thrilling about knowing the silk everyone saw wasn't real. That underneath, she was technically, entirely free.
She'd never let it drop on purpose before. Not completely. Not outside.
'...What if I just—?'
The violet fabric dissolved at her touch.
She stood there; in the sunlight, in the open air, in the forest that didn't care, and felt the world arrive on her skin all at once.
It wasn't what she'd expected.
She'd thought it would feel like defiance. It did. But there was something else underneath it. Quieter. Stranger. Like she'd been missing something she hadn't known to name.
The breeze dragged naughty fingers across her breasts, down her stomach, and between her thighs, raising goosebumps everywhere it touched.
Her tail flicked once, then curled tight, soft fur brushing sensitive skin on her upper thigh.
'Oh… That’s—'
She leaned back against a sun-warmed oak, bark rough against her shoulders, grass cool under her feet. Sunlight moved across her body as the canopy shifted. Everything felt too bright. Too sharp. Too alive.
Her hands moved on their own.
She ran her palms down her sides, over the curve of her hips, then higher. When she cupped her breasts, their weight filled her hands perfectly. Her nipples were already tight from the open air, and the moment her thumbs brushed over them, a bright spark shot straight down between her legs.
She bit her lip.
'This is ridiculous… I’m just standing here…'
But she didn't stop.
Her fingers drifted lower, over the soft curve of her belly, until they reached the heat gathering between her thighs. She was slick, wetter than she had any right to be after only a few seconds of breeze and sunlight. The realization made her ears flatten in embarrassment.
'Why does this feel so—'
She let one finger slide along her soaked folds, then another. Every slow stroke sent warm, liquid pleasure rolling through her belly. Her breathing grew shaky. Her thoughts started to fray at the edges.
She found the swollen little spot at the top of her slit. The first circle made her knees buckle. A helpless sound slipped out before she could catch it.
"Nyaa~"
Her ears flicked, tail jerked hard, slapping against her leg.
'Did I just… Oh gods, I actually nyaa’d!'
But she couldn't stop. She rubbed faster, chasing that sharp, bright pleasure building low in her core. Her hips started moving in tiny, needy rolls. Everything felt slippery and hot and dangerously good.
'Control… come on, Tharia…'
SNAP.
A branch cracked somewhere behind her.
Tharia’s eyes flew open. Her tail went rigid. Every hair on her body stood up. The warm heat in her stomach curdled into pure panic.
'Oh no no no— not right now!'
The bushes exploded.
A massive black wolf the size of a carriage burst into the clearing, matted black fur trailing oily qi like smoke, icy blue eyes locked on her like she was dinner. It did not look friendly.
Tharia reacted on pure instinct. Qi surging desperately for the illusion.
The robe reformed.
Then betrayed her instantly.
Opaque. Gone. Opaque. Gone.
“Not now!” she shrieked, stumbling backward. “Not during a fight, you stupid robe!”
Her face went nuclear.
Every spike of embarrassment made the strobing worse. It flashed through an increasingly humiliating greatest-hits collection: pathetic sleeve, thigh-high stockings only, nothing at all, then a single glowing heart-shaped patch that somehow made everything worse.
The wolf actually paused mid-charge, head tilting in visible confusion, as if even it was wondering what the hell it was looking at.

Tharia spun and ran.
Naked.
Full sprint.
Arms flailing, tail streaming behind her like a white flag of surrender. She desperately tried to throw basic illusions behind her; bright flashes of light, fake rustling sounds in the bushes, blurry patches of color. They all fizzled weakly or came out backwards, doing almost nothing to slow the wolf down.
The wolf roared and gave chase.
She zigzagged between trees, heart pounding. A low branch nearly took her head off. Another made her stumble. She was leaving a trail of pink sparkles and pure humiliation behind her.
The wolf gained fast.
In desperation she threw one last illusion; a giant glowing acorn right in front of the wolf’s face.
The wolf smashed straight into a small tree instead.
The tree belonged to a very familiar, very fat squirrel.
The squirrel that had watched her earlier disaster with such judgmental eyes.
It exploded out of its ruined home in a furious ball of fluff and rage, chittering like a tiny demon. It launched itself at the wolf’s face, claws out, and smacked the wolf right across the snout with its fat body before scampering away with an angry squeak.
The wolf staggered, confused for one precious second.
Tharia didn’t waste it.
She dove sideways. Her bare shoulder scraped rough bark as she hit the ground hard. The robe vanished completely on impact, leaving her rolling naked across dirt and leaves.
“This is the worst timing ever!” she yelled, scrambling to her feet while trying to cover herself with one arm and form a shield with the other. Her qi was scattered, half her focus still screaming about being completely exposed in front of a murder wolf.
The wolf pivoted, jaws wide. Tharia’s hands were moving but she was too slow—
A thread of golden light cut through the air.
It wasn’t a blade. Something finer. A weave of Fate Law so sharp it unraveled the wolf’s aura in one clean surgical stroke. The beast whimpered once and collapsed in a heap.
Silence fell over the clearing.
Tharia lay on the ground, chest heaving, staring up at the canopy. Several birds that had fled during the fight were now cautiously returning.
'I almost died. I almost died because I was fingering myself in the middle of the damn forest like an idiot.'
A shadow fell over her. The air went still—pressure like the moment before lightning strikes.
The woman standing several paces away looked like she’d stepped out of a celestial painting and walked a very long way to get here. Silver hair spilled past her shoulders. Dark silk robes draped her form. The air around her shimmered with restrained power.
Her pale gold eyes were cool. Steady. And currently taking in every inch of Tharia’s current situation. Specifically, on the parts of Tharia the robe was failing to cover. Which was most of them.
The gaze didn’t waver. It just held there, calm and thorough, like Serenya had already decided she wasn’t going to be embarrassed… and was waiting to see if Tharia would be embarrassed enough for both of them.
“Eek!”
Tharia made a sound that could only be described as a squeak and scrambled to her feet. Her tail curled desperately around her thigh in the world’s most pathetic attempt at modesty. Her hands flew to cover her chest.
She tried to force it stable again. The robe thickened for half a second… then promptly turned into a single glowing strip of fabric that did absolutely nothing useful.
Tharia made a strangled noise and spun halfway around, trying to hide behind her own tail like that would somehow help.
“Are you injured?” the woman asked. Her voice was melodic, with something ancient and familiar underneath it that made Tharia’s chest ache for reasons she didn’t understand.
“I’m insulted,” Tharia managed. Her face burned so hot she was surprised steam wasn’t coming off her ears. “By my own incompetence.”
The silver-haired woman stepped closer. She smelled like frost and spring flowers, a combination that had no business existing but did anyway.
Up close she was… a lot.
The kind of beautiful that made Tharia acutely aware she was sitting in dirt with her robe doing its best impression of a very shy ghost.
“You wander the forest in illusion cloth that collapses the moment your heart flutters.” The woman’s gaze dropped briefly to Tharia’s hemline, which was still shimmering with deep structural insecurity. “That is reckless, Tharia.”
Tharia’s heart stopped.
“How do you know my name?”
Something moved behind those gold eyes — confusion, or pain — there and gone so fast Tharia almost missed it.
“I saw it on your storage ring’s sigil.” A pause, slight as a skipped breath. “My name is Serenya.”
The name landed like a key turning in a lock she hadn’t known was there.
Tharia stood very still. The embarrassment refused to fade, making her ears burn and her tail twitch, but underneath it, something had gone quiet and attentive in a way she didn’t have words for yet.
Serenya’s gaze lingered on the unstable robe. Her brow furrowed slightly.
“I like the risk,” Tharia forced a grin that was only slightly unsteady. She was not going to let being discovered naked and wolf-adjacent ruin her composure entirely. “Besides, if the illusion fails, it’s not like I mind being seen.”
Serenya’s gaze held hers for one measured beat.
“That is a lie. Your tail is shaking.”
Tharia glanced down.
Her tail was quivering like a plucked string.
Absolute traitor.
“We should leave.” Serenya extended one slender hand. “The wolf was a scavenger. Its master will be close.”
Tharia stared at the offered hand for a long second. The Chaos in her blood had gone very quiet. Watchful. The way it went when something important was about to happen.
She reached out.
Their fingers brushed.
The world tilted.
Battlefield of falling stars. A figure bleeding radiance. Grief that hit her like a fist below the ribs.
Then it was gone and Serenya’s hand was warm in hers.
She pulled back. Said nothing. Didn’t trust her voice.
Serenya’s hand slightly trembled before she lowered it.
“The city isn’t far.” Her voice was steady. Her eyes were not. Quite.
They walked.
Tharia followed the quiet sway of dark silk robes through the dappled light, her heart hammering a rhythm it had never used before. Every few steps it flickered, sending fresh heat crawling up her ears.
