Chapter 155: Crisis Protocol Active, The Credit Card Revelation
*The Marriott. We used the Marriott downtown twice. Victoria booked it under a fake name. She used cash for the room. But the bar tab went on her credit card because she forgot, because she was happy, because I made her sloppy. The hotel charge isn’t the room. It’s the two glasses of wine she ordered after, the ones we drank in the lobby because she wasn’t ready to leave yet. That’s what Greg found. Fifty-six dollars of wine that cracked an eleven-year marriage.*
The shower stopped. Diana emerged in a black robe, her hair wrapped in a towel, her face carrying the freshly-scrubbed composure of a woman who’d rebuilt herself in twelve minutes. She saw his face. Her posture changed.
"What."
He showed her the phone. She read the texts. Her jaw tightened. The Ice Queen assessment protocol activated behind those ice-blue eyes, processing threat levels and response vectors.
"Which hotel?"
"The Marriott downtown."
"That was sloppy of her."
"She was sloppy because she was happy. We made her sloppy."
Diana didn’t flinch. She was already moving. Phone in hand. Towel discarded on the floor. The robe still open, her body visible, 36C breasts and lean torso, now a battlefield command center instead of a body he’d been inside twenty minutes ago.
"I’m calling my legal team. Victoria needs counsel before she says anything to Greg. He’s a husband in shock. Husbands in shock make recordings. They save texts. They build cases." She was dialing. "Don’t let her respond to anything he says tonight."
"I need to call Elena."
"Call Elena. I’ll call Victoria’s phone directly. She won’t answer but she’ll see the missed call and know she has backup." Diana pressed the phone to her ear. "This is Diana Blackwood. I need the family law team activated. Tonight. Yes, I know what time it is."
Lucas called Elena. She picked up on the first ring. She always picked up on the first ring when it was him because Elena Vance didn’t believe in making people wait.
"Victoria’s husband found the hotel charge. Greg knows." He said it flat. No buildup. Elena didn’t need softening. She needed data.
Silence. Two seconds. The sound of Elena processing.
"The Marriott?"
"Yes."
"We were careful. Victoria was careful. She used cash for the room." A pause. "The bar tab."
"The bar tab."
"Fifty-six dollars. Two glasses of wine. That’s what ends eleven years." Her voice was steady. Controlled. The voice of a woman who’d survived her own divorce and understood exactly what Victoria was feeling right now. "I’m calling her. You stay there. Don’t come to her tonight. She needs a woman’s voice right now, not her lover’s."
"El."
"Don’t. I’ve got this. I know what she needs because I was her. Three years ago. Sitting on a bathroom floor. Richard in the other room. The silence so loud it hurt." Her voice cracked. One syllable. The Ice Queen allowing one fracture because the situation warranted it. "I’m calling her now. Don’t follow up tonight. Tomorrow we assess."
The call ended. Diana was in the next room, her voice clipped, precise, issuing instructions to lawyers who were probably billing two thousand dollars an hour for being woken up at 10 PM.
Elena called Victoria. Victoria didn’t pick up the first time. Elena called again. And again. On the fourth call, Victoria answered.
Lucas couldn’t hear Victoria’s voice. He could hear Elena’s. Low. Steady. The particular tone she used when she was holding someone together. The tone she’d never used on him because he was the one she held, not the one she held others with.
"I know. I know. Listen to me. Don’t go into that room tonight. Stay where you are. Lock the door if you need to. You don’t owe him a conversation at 10 PM when you’re in shock."
A pause. Victoria’s voice, tinny and broken, bleeding through the phone speaker.
"No. Don’t make any decisions tonight. Let him have his feelings. You have yours. Tomorrow, we talk. All of us. You’re not alone in this."
Another pause. Longer.
"Because you’re not. Because I said so. Because when my marriage ended, nobody was there, and I swore I’d be there for someone else. I’m being there for you. Let me."
Lucas sat on the sofa. His hands still. The city below continuing its perpetual motion.
Diana appeared in the doorway. Robe tied. Hair down. Her face carrying the particular expression of a woman who’d just mobilized a legal team at 10 PM for a crisis involving a man she’d never met and a woman she barely tolerated.
"Legal team is standing by. They’ll have counsel at Victoria’s house by morning. Restraining order available if needed. Asset protection protocol active." She listed each item like a quarterly report. "Victoria’s situation is contained. For tonight."
"She’s sobbing."
"She should be. She’s ending a marriage. That deserves sobbing." Diana sat beside him. Close but not touching. The boardroom queen allowing proximity without contact. "I’ve been where she is. Different circumstances. Same feeling. The ground disappearing under your feet."
"You went through a divorce?"
"I went through three. Blackwood men don’t stay. I learned to build my own ground." She looked at him. Ice-blue eyes. "Victoria will rebuild. She’s stronger than she thinks. Stronger than Greg knows."
"How do you know?"
"Because she chose you. Women who choose you are already braver than they realize."
*She said that like it was simple. Like choosing me was an act of courage and not an act of madness. Diana Blackwood has been divorced three times and she’s sitting here in a robe at 10 PM having activated her legal team for a woman she barely knows because that woman chose to sleep with her lover. The harem doesn’t function like a harem. It functions like a family. A broken, complicated, impossible family that shows up at 10 PM with lawyers and phone calls and the specific kind of love that doesn’t ask permission.*
His phone buzzed. Victoria. Direct text.
*Elena called. She’s staying on the line. Greg is asleep on the couch. I’m in the bathroom. I don’t know who I am right now.*
*You’re Victoria Sterling. You’re a professor. You’re a woman who chose to stop pretending. That’s who you are.*
*He said he wants to fix it. He wants therapy. He wants to try.*
*What do you want?*
*I want you. I want this to not be destroying someone.*
*It’s already destroying someone, Victoria. The question is what you do next.*
*I know. Elena said the same thing.*
*Because it’s the truth.*
*Tomorrow?*
*Tomorrow. We talk. All of us.*
*All of us?*
*You, me, Elena. Diana’s lawyers if you want them. Whatever you need.*
*I need to not be alone.*
*You’re not.*
The phone went quiet. Victoria somewhere across the city, sitting on her bathroom floor, Elena’s voice in her ear, Greg asleep on the couch, her marriage cracking because of fifty-six dollars of wine and a moment of happiness she’d allowed herself.

Diana stood. Straightened her robe. "I’ll have the guest room prepared. You’re not going home tonight. Elena will understand."
"Elena will understand?"
"Elena understands crisis logistics. She’s the best at them I’ve ever seen." Diana paused. "She’s the best at everything I’ve ever seen. Don’t tell her I said that."
*The Ice Queen and the Empire Queen, working together at 10 PM to save a professor’s marriage from the wreckage of a hotel bar tab. The machinery of the harem, built for pleasure, repurposing itself for crisis. Diana with her lawyers. Elena with her phone calls. And somewhere across the city, a woman on a bathroom floor learning that the price of choosing yourself is the destruction of everything you pretended to be.*
Lucas lay in Diana’s guest room. Egyptian cotton sheets. A view of the city that cost more per night than most people’s rent. The pillow smelled like lavender. Diana’s guest room smelled like lavender. Of course it did.
His phone buzzed one final time. Elena.
*She’s asleep. Finally. I stayed on the line until her breathing changed. She cried for two hours. Then she got quiet. Then she slept.*
*You should sleep too.*
*I’m in Diana’s guest room.*
*Good. Stay there. Come home in the morning. We’ll figure this out. We always figure it out.*
*El.*
*What.*
*Thank you.*
*Don’t thank me. Thank Diana’s legal team. They bill by the hour and they’re very good.*
*Still.*
*Still. I know. Sleep.*
*Victoria said Greg wants to fix it. He wants therapy.*
*He wants the version of Victoria that existed before she stopped pretending. That version is dead. He doesn’t know that yet. He’ll learn.*
*Is that what Richard wanted?*
